TheWatShot Posted Sunday at 06:13 PM Posted Sunday at 06:13 PM Still blows my mind how the Notre Dame propaganda machine can overcome years of Notre Dame having a weak schedule in spite of having more flexibility than anyone, we win a national championship and somehow they've convinced everyone that we're the ones who backed out. They didn’t schedule us in 2021 expecting us to have made more expanded playoffs than them. They expected a team still chasing a bowl win after several decades ND schedules a big “no conf” (I’m using this term as a big name that they don’t normally schedule) every year like the rest of the schools I mentioned. The Wisconsin game is a Covid cancellation makeup where they played at soldier field and then return to Lambeau. Wisconsin has done that same setup with Alabama. For example, It would be cool if IU played Texas at Jerry-world and had a return to Lucas Oil. The a lot of the SEC used to schedule real soft outside of the SEC and then got shamed into some tougher matchups and Nick Saban kind of led the way. You can make all the gamesmanship arguments you want, but as a fan I prefer to see bigger games. If we’re really the best now—and I agree we are—I don’t get the appeal of playing a bunch of MAC teams all September. Quote

The appeal is one extra game where starters won’t get injured, and depth can get game snaps. We’re still going to play five or six ranked teams every year without it. Brass Cannon Posted Sunday at 08:43 PM Posted Sunday at 08:43 PM Let’s also remember that while flawed FPI had ODU ahead of at least 6 Big Ten teams. And a significant number of P4 teams. Had North Texas held onto their coach one more year they would definitely not be an easy out Quote

The appeal to a fan of “not watching guys get injured (a complete hypothetical, btw)” vs watching a big game is a no-brainer to me. But I can see our entertainment values differ. I trust cig on the strategic part of it. With that said, other teams haven’t had a problem navigating both. I suspect Indiana could do the same. I also look forward to everyone in here changing their tune when Cig does schedule a big non conf game in the future. My impression is given the long term planning with schedules Cig probably hasn’t had a lot of say in how things have been scheduled these first few years. Quote

HoosiersAthletics Forum Both teams that have won the 12 team playoff played 0 P4 teams out of conference. So teams have had trouble navigating it. Small sample size but fact remains that no body who played a P4 out of conference has ever won the 12 team playoffs Quote

Small sample size but fact remains that no body who played a P4 out of conference has ever won the 12 team playoffs There’s zero incentive for a Big Ten or SEC team to do so. I don’t want to see established OOC rivalries go away, like UF/FSU or Georgia/Georgia Tech, but why should it be forced on us or any other P2 program at this point? To placate Notre Dame? So that the networks can sell a few additional Week 2 games? People can argue about the lack of big OOC games, but conference realignment has made a number of “big OOC games” now conference games, such as Ohio State vs USC, Oklahoma vs Georgia, and Texas vs Bama. When it was all said and done, we faced one of the toughest schedules in the history of this sport last year, and that was without a P4 non-conference game. There are so many things unbalanced in college football today that adding an unnecessary P4 game isn’t worth the risk of losing. And with the playoff, no champion going forward can be criticized for “ducking” anyone. Who knows what Indiana vs Notre Dame would look like in 2030, and the odds are that we’ll face the Irish much earlier than 2030 in the playoffs. J34 and Napleshoosier 2 Quote

The cupcake games allow us to play the starters four or five quarters less, thereby reducing injury risk by about ten percent. And the cupcakes allow us to give substantial playing time to the second and third string, building depth and putting untested players in game situations. Plus we saw how slow we came out of the blocks last year diring the ODU game. Rourkes first game against FIU was tame as well. Other schools play tough games with new players right away but I really don’t mind the current approach if it builds for being competitive in the CFP. Pagoda and cthomas 2 Quote
BtownStrength Posted Monday at 02:37 AM Posted Monday at 02:37 AM I understand both sides of the scheduling argument. I am bummed that the ND series isn't happening. It would have been incredibly fun with lots of hype surrounding. Great for the fans. On the other hand, the committee really only seems to care about number of losses at thia point. And until that changes, cupcakes early seem fine. Exciting? No, but long term might be best. Also, other have mentioned we get to rest starters, build depth, and keep the playbook vanilla until we get to the real tests. I suppose there COULD be a scenario where our OOC SOS could be used as a tiebreaker and drop us a spot or 2, but I think Cig is comfortable rolling those dice. str8baller 1 Quote

Lebowski Posted Monday at 01:10 PM Posted Monday at 01:10 PM Does a Big Ten school that finishes first in the conference (doesn't lose a single conference game) but has 3 OOC losses and Big Ten championship loss on its resume punch a ticket the CFP? Quote

Probably depends on context (was their early season injured QB that got healthy?), but I would guess no. Its hard to see the committee believing in a 3 regular season loss team. They would probably use the OOC losses to disparage the Big Ten and let in a 7th SEC team Quote

The 3 OOC losses were to top half P4 bowl and CFP qualifiers and the loss in the championship game was a rematch where they beat in the regular season. Does this 4 loss Big Ten team punch a ticket? Lebowski Posted Monday at 03:27 PM Posted Monday at 03:27 PM 8 minutes ago, Stuhoo said: Yes - under that scenario Ohio State would get in even with those four losses. Are you sure? Same scenario but different conference. SEC. I'd be shocked if any 4 loss school gets in a 12 team CFP. They didn't let a 13-0 P4 school in the 4 team CFP. And this is the reason why IUFB and every other P4 school has an OOC like it currently is. Not one school plays 3 P4 OOC schools on their schedule. Does Michigan get a bid if it loses all of their OOC games (where all 3 teams win their conference) but goes undefeated in the conference and then loses to either O$U or IUFB in the conference championship?
