PSA: Upcoming Big Ten Elite featuring the 2002 IUBB Team

Recommended Posts

Just watched. Show really highlighted how unprepared and undeserving Davis was for job. Davis said he knew how to play, and as a coach he understood other things like spacing but didn't know zone press schemes, etc...

Davis is a good guy. Moye was teasing him about being so emotional. Coverdale "growing up in Indiana, you dream about winning Big Ten."

Tough, hard nosed guys like Coverdale, Moye, and Fife. Odle filling in for George Leach was key. Forgot about Leach a little.

That Maryland team was really good. Underrated. Dixon, Steve Blake, Chris Wilcox, Lonnie Baxter.

Show was equally focused on Maryland, if not, more so.

Showed Luke Recker loss in Big Tourney. That still hurts.

Always loved Newtons game. Had a nice stroke for a tall guy. Sampson said he was confident that he would beat IU that year. Said Oklahoma was the better team.

Maryland beat Kentucky, Uconn(Caron Butler), Kansas, and Indiana that year for the title. Impressive list.

the game against Uconn featured 8 future nba players according to Gary Williams

watched it last night on TIVO. Wow, i really enjoyed the behind the scenes look at everything. I really miss our basketball, like we used to have....before the purge.... Kirk H and the hook, Tom (chub) Coverdale. Dane F. Jared J. Jeff Newton, scrODLE.

Wow---this brought back great memories.

Arguably less talent then we have today---but certainly a lot tougher!

I would love to see this year's team develop that toughness!

That team did have some talent ( talent, but not saying close to best talent in tourney) with Mr Basketballs from several states and a couple of burger boys but the toughness of Fife, Moye, Coverdale (and others) does not seem, at this point, to be remotely closely matched by this team. The 2001-2002 team just had guys with the strong will to win.

On the current team I think guys like Bracey Wright (oops, I mean Blackmon) are probably good guys but do not seem to have the killer "do whatever it takes to win" attitude.

All that being said.....it was great to see them claw back from 16 down against ND. Can they sustain that?

Just had a chance to watch this. A few thoughts...

- It still amazes me how poorly the Knight firing was handled. Doninger seemed surprised that most players wanted to leave after that? His solution was co-head coaches? Really? The whole administration became so smug and big-headed after we had a little bit of success. Hearing what each of Brand, Clapacs and Doninger had to say.... I am very, very happy that they are no longer a part of this university. They truly believed they handled the situation in such a wonderful manner and that IU basketball was better for it when the reality of the situation is that we have never truly recovered from it. No wonder so many former players distanced themselves from IU during that time.

- Mike Davis was a nice guy, but he was nowhere near ready for the IU job. Both from a PR standpoint and from an X's and O's standpoint. And he all but admitted it during the documentary. He did admit he had no idea what he was stepping into. Yet, once again, the administration thought he was clearly the right guy. Hindsight is 20/20, but good grief.

- Dane Fife understands IU basketball. If he ever becomes the IU head coach, I don't think it's a bad hire. He GETS it. Just listen to him talk a little bit.

- I'll admit, I don't think I ever gave Jared Jeffries enough credit for how good of a player that he was. Part of it was because I was a fan of his at Bloomington North, so I'm sure I was overly-critical of him at IU with watching him from before . But he was an extremely talented player that could do a whole lot. Glad he was a Hoosier.

- It was a little hard to see Coverdale during the interview. I hope he is healthy. But he was such an important player during that run. Fearless and tough. One of several leaders on that team.

I haven't had a lot of exposure to Fife because I'm just too young to *really* remember him as an IU player. After watching this though, I totally understand what everyone is talking about as him being the IU guy they'd like to see here.

I'm old enough to remember him.  I loved Dane, one of my all-time favorites.  I wanted him as an assistant here so bad.
