So to change the pace a little bit here.. I was mapping out Crown Points schedule next year. And I live in the Lafayette area, and GG & Crown Point play at Lafayette Jeff on 11/25. I think I'm going to go check our boy out!! See if I can't get a good look at his skill set and see how much he's grown from now until then.

We will be playing KU in the Maui final on 11/25, so GG may have to wait...

Again....why does it matter where he was ranked?   This is a paper battle you're trying to win.  Dekker did nothing more on the floor his freshman season than Grant will do for Indiana.  He was mostly a shooter.  I think he played more than Grant will (much because of Ryan's need for speed on the perimeter defensively), but he took about 7 shots per game, more than half of them from distance.   And, we have no idea yet where Grant will end up in the rankings.   I'm doing something far different than feeding a narrative; but I'll make you a deal.  I'll keep "feeding it" if you keep telling yourself that rankings after a kid's junior season are relevant to outcome when he's in college or to whether or not Indiana will be able to recruit other kids.

 

I never claimed Indiana would not be able to recruit other kids. One again, rankings for the most part are generally a good predictor of playing time and ability. There will always be exceptions though. Also Dekker was a stud freshman, so your point there is irrelevant.

If Matt Roth was cloned and available for a six man IU class, I'd take him in a heartbeat. I hope that GG is a Matt Roth clone.

I don't know Stu, I don't think even Matt Roth was good enough to be our six man. Heck... he didn't even have a spot on the team when he had a 5th year option. He went off on OSU on the road but that didn't represent his whole career. IF he was our six man then weren't very good.

yeah, he only played starter minutes and averaged 10ppg as freshmen on a good Wisconsin team.

Precisely. Matt Roth couldn't even hold his roster spot and that is our comparison and justification for Gelon.

This is just another example of Crean's haphazard recruiting style. How do you not watch this kid halfway into his Sr. year and make sure this is the player you want. No big fish were jumping in and we were the dream destination. I can't get over the fact we watched him play 1 or 2 tournaments only.

At least we saw him in game action, we can't even say that for Hoetzel. I am still astonished by the way he played this recruitment. To me, there is zero reason not to slow play this recruitment. We were the dream school.

This is why UK can wait as long as they want. They are most kids dream school. We were GGs dream. Maybe our transfer numbers would be more reasonable if we actually had a recruiting game plan.

Not as our sixth man (his defense wasn't good enough) but as part of a six man class.

 

I like having someone in the 7th-9th man role that can really stretch the defense, ala Roth, Zeisloft, Kyle Hornsby.

I agree with this, and Gelon may be that guy. But I still don't agree with our approach here.

He has that kind of range, and he's bigger.   I think kids who understand the game and play the way he seems to (have only seen Youtube video and heard some things about him, but he clearly understands simple things like spacing, angles, position defense, and how to use screens) can only help Crean.   Kids who need the ball and try to create generally make Crean look like a bad coach.    I think the Roth comparison is generally a very good one.

He wasn't really a stud freshman.  A stud freshman would start, and he didn't; he was a shooter on that particular team.   He took 7 shots a game, more than half of which were 3 pointers.   He became a stud, and he's a great athlete who was also 6'9"..  Not really the point, though.   He fit what Wisconsin needed just like this kid fits what Indiana needs.  How many shooters does Crean need in a penetrate and kick offense and a secondary break that plays first on the perimeter unless something's open in the paint?   I'm also not saying Grant will have much of a difference making role as a freshman, and I'm not necessarily comparing him as a player to Dekker.  

 

I just don't understand why the order in which kids sign makes any difference at all, and why people are skeptical of a 6'5" kid who has range to 25 feet and shoots 43% from the 3 point line.  Some kids don't grow or mature until they're 16, and Brian Evans is a classic example.   He was nobody as a high school junior.  A bean pole without even an offer from Indiana State in his home town.     To me, it doesn't matter one bit what this kid will do as a freshman, and I think he's a lot better than his ranking and a lot better than some are giving him credit for.  Nobody will be right or wrong for a few years, so there's no real point in bantering any further.

The Roth comparison sure doesn't excite me all that much. Roth got most of his minutes when we were really bad. While he was deadly when left open he couldnt get his own shot and was a huge liability on Defense.

Cal and UK can literally walk in and offer a kid at the last second and they'll commit. Are they cheating? Idk. They haven't been caught so as far as we know they haven't. He just knows how to get it done basically.

I understand this sentiment but HIGH major college basketball is really just like majoring in Basketball. Their ultimate goal is to play ball professionally. I want quality human beings first and foremost but I don't care if they are "majoring in basketball" at all. It's generally their best skill and most of the really high major players will play professionally somewhere.
