Where can we get 6 wins?

Recommended Posts

Do or die needs to be THIS year, not next. You can't keep a coach for more than 5 seasons when he's won less than 33% of his games. He's also nearing the end of his contract (2017 is the last year), so we kind of have to make a move one way or the other pretty soon.

As the resident ridiculously optimistic die-hard IUFB, this is 100% truth. It's showtime CKW.

I'm okay with this scenario too, possibly leaning this way.  I'm not sure it'd happen though, and if it didn't it should be 100% do or die next season.

But it was built eventually...

Maybe my interaction with Wilson has left me a bit bias, but honestly we will not attract a coach from a similar background if we were to fire Wilson. Nobody is going to be willing to go to a dumpster fire of a program if they are also quick to let you go. And I would argue that yes, five years would be quick. Wilson is recruiting well and we caught a tough break last year injury wise. I think it would be better for us to ride out Wilson's contract and trust he will get it right than bounce from coach to coach hoping we can catch lightning in a bottle

This reminds me of posts I read on Peegs a few years ago where people talked about the importance of "continuity" and how Lynch would eventually figure it out if we just let him keep on keeping on.

If Wilson can't do it this year, what makes you think he ever will? I mean, he has a senior quarterback and a manageable schedule and you're already giving him a pass when the season hasn't even started yet?

I don't have any expectations for a program that flat out sucks. We were a dumpster fire before he got here and we are still bad. A bad program that is also a revolving door for coaches will seriously always be a door mat. If we get stability in the program and a good core of players and show potential, then at the least we become a serviceable option for decent coaches to use us as a stepping stone.

Unrelated, I think Wilson will get it done and I think we get 5-7 wins depending how the season breaks. That is acceptable to me for IU football

At some point you have to establish some expectations.  Stability in and of itself does nothing, coaches have to earn stability and at some point Wilson has to have the results to back up the hope he's trying to sell.  It's a good thing people are saying he needs to perform now, it means they're setting some expectations and won't settle for just anything.

David Cutcliffe has made Duke respectable. He is no better than Wilson.

Wait, what? Surely this is an absolute joke. Cutcliffe is widely regarded as a great coach. I''ve seen him on lists of the top 10 coaches in college football before.

He's so good, that he got fired from Ole Miss and had to take a job at Duke who was worse than we have ever been.

1. "Duke is worse than we have ever been"

Well this just simply is not true any in way, shape or form.

All time record:

Duke474–493–31 (.490)

IU 459–631–45 (.424)

Last season:

Duke - 5-3 in conference, 9-4 overall

IU - 1-7 in conference, 4-8 overall

I can continue if you want. However, it will only further illustrate that your claim is wrong.

2. Cutcliffe is a bad coach?

Cutcliffe receives Walter Camp coach of the year award

Cutcliffe voted the nations most underrated coach

Cutcliffe ranked 9th best coach in college football

He's so bad that Peyton Manning and a plethora of other quarterbacks flock to Duke to work with him in the off season. He's so bad that he turned to the Tennessee job among others recently.

Should I continue to prove you wrong or will this suffice?

Okay so Duke is not and has never been worse than IU and Cutcliffe is a very good coach. But it was a definitely a crappy program when he got there. How many seasons did it take him to get to a bowl game? I think it was either 5th or 6th season when he finally made it to one. It takes a while and I'm confident we'll get there under Wilson. If not this season, maybe next? If after next season we don't see improvement, I'm okay with looking somewhere else.

Oh don't get me wrong, Duke definitely was an awful program for a while before he got there. And I'm not trying to knock CKW at all, just wanted to point out that Cutcliffe is not a bad coach.

Lol. I never said Cutcliffe was a bad coach!!!!!!! I said I don't think he's any better than Kevin Wilson. I didn't say Duke was worse than us "All-Time." I said they were worse than us when Cutcliffe took over. I believe they were 0-12. U guys were over-analyzing everything. And Duke football sucks all-time. Comparing IU and Duke football is like comparing Roseanne Barr and Rosie O'donnell.

good point, we can't keep giving guys 5-6 years and out the door.

This is a make or break year for Wilson.  You'll see him extended or fired, one or the other.  You can't have a coach go into the final year for recruiting purposes.  A coach in the final year of his contract trying to recruit is virtually impossible.  That's why we're losing on so many in state prospects.  Other coaches are playing up the fact that Wilson may be gone after this year, so why go to IU when Wilson and the staff could be gone after this year.

I think increasing the number of wins this season depends on several things. Run defense should be improved with all the returning starters however pass defense looks pretty iffy. Loosing Allen hurts. The run game should be pretty good even loosing Coleman. The line brings back lots of players and the UAB back may turn out really well. The pass game depends on how the new receivers do. I have my fingers crossed hoping we get through preseason at 4-0 and then beat a few teams like Purdue, Illinois, and Rutgers.
