Devin Davis cited for marijuana possession

Recommended Posts

I'm saying kick Devin and Hanner off the team from my keyboard/couch. Too many strikes! Get control of your team.

Or don't... I'm not a huge Crean fan so maybe his mismanagement of this will bring him closer to the ledge.

I know that "it's Crean's fault". But I just don't get it. You're the coach, what do you do? If you tell me kick Devin off the team from behind your keyboard, excuse me if I disregard your strength and sense of integrity as false.

I think kicking Devin off is just about the best course of action, for all parties, and let me explain why:

From the perspective of caring about Devin:

Devin was known to be immature as a freshman, okay, not really a problem as a lot of 18 year olds are and he's probably enjoying his status on campus. After his head trauma, that changed. The kid almost lost his life and was extremely lucky to have come out as well as he did. Now, he's been cited for marijuana, with Hanner having been present. His time in Bloomington has been marred in controversy and turmoil. This suggests to me that IU is just not the ideal location for him. It doesn't mean Devin is a bad guy, it means he needs a fresh start. He has run into so much trouble, may be hanging with a crowd that makes him act stupid, that I honestly believe it is in his best interest to pursue the rest of his career elsewhere.

From the perspective of the team next season:

We loaded up on the front court, and have plenty of depth with Holt, Hanner, Bryant, Morgan, Troy as a stretch as well as Collin. Now, the depth is decent and Devin is expendable. This isn't to say we should get rid of him to free up a scholarship at all. I'm saying, it is not as if he is Yogi... there are plenty of other options available for his spot on the team. He is clearly not prioritizing his role on the team, not because he is smoking marijuana like so many others, but because he doesn't care to take preventative measures to avoid getting caught. Doing so in a dorm or campus housing is just plain stupid. You don't need a kid on the team that doesn't take his commitment seriously, especially at this high of a level.

From the disciplinary perspective:

I could say so much for this category. Look at the off court behavior the last year. Unacceptable and unbelievable. The fact that this behavior persists tells me that there must be a change. There has to be a wake up call. We thought that Devin's accident may be that. Apparently, it did not wake up even Devin himself. Maybe these guys will see how serious they have to be if one of their buddies is sent packing. Everyone should be running miles, all off season, and be reminded they're running during the day because of the choices they're making at night. Maybe then we won't be waking up to bad news.

Don't even get me started on what punishment Hanner should face. I'm undecided on that frankly.

Being 100% honest, I think Devin should go, for the best of the team, Devin, and the program as a whole.

From my experience, it goes above Crean at this point. His boss needed to tell him long ago "his way" is not working. If Crean isn't able to control his team then he needs to be punished. Name another B1G team who has had as many off court issues as IU the past 15-18 months.

I see a few people saying just legalize marijuana and get it over with. That wont do anything to fix this problem. Do we really want our basketball program being lead by a bunch of pot heads? I have several friends who smoke pot so I dont mean any offense to those that do but I dont think iu basketball is a place I want to see it common place. You already cant smoke a cigarette any where inside in indiana except a true bar so I doubt he could smoke weed in thia situation even if it was legal. I am guessing even if it is legalized it will still be against team rules anyhow the same as I think several business owners would still drug test for it. I just think if you choose to play for iu be a role model. I am not sure I would want my kids following this team over the last few years hope it gets cleaned up before there old enough to understand what is going on.

The hardest part is knowing this never happens at KY........

I'm sure they do stuff at Kentucky cause 18-22 year kids will do "stuff" but the infuriating thing is they have enough sense to not get caught!

It almost seems as if they are arrogant and entitled and feel they don't need to take precautions.

Getting hard to keep track of all the comments but I know there have been several concerning Thomas Bryant and what his mother must be thinking.  And what about all the other mothers, fathers, guardians, high school coaches, etc., of kids we're trying to recruit?  What's the message they're hearing and reading?  May not be readily apparent in every instance and may be extremely subtle, but you can't tell me that our off-court issues of the past couple of years aren't going to have a negative impact on recruiting.  At the very least, other coaches will certainly be using it against us.  And the way things have gone, maybe we should be more worried about recruits who do want to come to IU.  Are they coming for the right reasons or the wrong reasons?

Your missing the point. When he gave Perea just a four game suspension ( two just stupid exhibition games) for his driving while drunk charge, it showed the kids the lack of seriousness he handles these types of issues. Im not saying dd should be gone, but this is what u get when u have a program with no real consequences for someone's actions. I smoke pot and I know it's not addictive. Dd did it by choice and disrespected coach. Coach Crean should be held accountable.

Unfortunately we see this morphing into the IU basketball program culture.  I don't think this is what we want. Will it hamper recruiting, you betcha.

It doesn't matter that "it's just pot". It's against team rules and, like it or not, still illegal.

Oh, you don't want to be held accountable for breaking team rules/the law? Have you tried not breaking them?

No one is saying don't hold the players accountable but it is a big leap to say he should be kicked off the team for this.  That's the disagreement here between many.

I can guarantee you that the actions of Devin on Monday will have zero impact on recruiting.

You're thinking of Stan and Troy's suspensions last year. Hanner's was mid-season and even less punishment if I remember correctly.

This makes me wonder about the drug testing for our athletes.

If I remember correctly, it took a leak to the press last season to bring to light the fact that Stan and Troy had failed drug tests.Would it have been swept under the rug otherwise?

This incident makes it look as if the rule isn't stressed enough or isn't seen as a big deal to the kids on the team. The culture of this team seems to be one that lacks discipline and shows little respect for authority. Why do you think that is? Give an inch take a mile.

No one is saying kick him off the team for just this. They're taking everything into account when saying kick him off.

It's not just this, it's cumulative. This isn't his first incident and if CCG is right not his first time with drugs either.

A message needs to be sent. If that means being the bad guy and coming down harder than people like, so be it.
