Devin Davis cited for marijuana possession

Recommended Posts

Question is, is he gone??

How many strikes does one deserve.

Dang it, DD, use your head!

Well, considering he left part of his head on a Bloomington curb, I'm not real sure I expect better decision making out of him at this point.

Seriously---these sort of things happened under Knight's watch too. I have knowledge of a few players who were Creaned---I mean Knighted because of marijuana, etc.  Social media and instant news just didn't cover every little detail of the program back then.  You do the crime---you do the time! No sympathy here.

And for those who doubt the above, read the following from December 1978:   https://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=861&dat=19781213&id=F9RSAAAAIBAJ&sjid=qn8DAAAAIBAJ&pg=5451,3523311&hl=en

Punishment for Davis will be something along the lines of...suspended from team activities until June 1st. Then they will allow him back on the team, so they can "punish him internally". Then he will be suspended for two exhibition games and two games against 300+ RPI teams.

Crean will trot Yogi out and have him talk about how the players have to do a better job of holding each other accountable...yada yada yada. We have all seen it before. Same story different day.

In all honesty the punishment you described fits the crime.  It is time for people to stop acting like this is some sort of crazy issue.  He was caught with a minimal amount of a drug that is incredibly commonplace in college and out of college.

It would be a shame and unfair for Crean to make an example out of Devin and kick him off the team because then the punishment is inconsistent with what other current players got for essentially the same thing.

This is not something Crean could've prevented by having more harsh penalties to Stan and Troy.  If Devin or any player is going to smoke weed in the offseason they will do it just like most players you've cheered for on any recent teams have done it.  The NFL is likely to end testing for marijuana during the next labor negotiations.  This is really not a big deal.

I don't think it's about policing them 24/7, it's about why don't they respect Crean/the program enough to be smarter and keep themselves out of these situations?

Well said. This is so sad and after everything that has went on in this program, Devin needs to go. I wouldn't mind seeing Hanner too. This is IU, the players have to respect it or they can go. Starts from the top!

Guilt by association is and always had been the chicken sh*t way for it to work.

What's "chicken sh*t" about holding kids accountable? Hanner was there when it went down. What did he do to change the situation? Nada. Legally, he's an accomplice. It's way more than "guilt by association". It's being there.

"Guilt by association" would be where DD did something wrong and Hanner is blamed/included because he has associated with DD. What happened is that something went down and both DD and Hanner were present at the scene.

I disagree. If they respected him, they would not continue to make him look like he is not in control.

You are right. There could come a time when their actions could cost their coach his job. I get the feeling they don't care much about anything to do with the program.

There were many things I disliked about The General especially in the latter years of his IU tenure but one thing I liked is how he held his players accountable and how he expected them to represent the university and the basketball program. I'm tired of this crap! I badly wanted to see Devin play ball again but after this, go play somewhere else. Get out of Bloomington and the sooner the better. And while you're packing your bags help Hanner pack his because I'm also tired of the mollycoddling he's gotten from Crean. Suspensions and hand slaps are pointless. Kick their asses out and do it quickly. Let's see some real backbone from the head coach and the AD.

Yep. Remember the trip to Alaska that resulted in three players being dismissed? Trying to remember now...seems like it was Roberson, Cox and one other?

Those three were dismissed but five other players were also caught but broke down (lots of tears) and apologized and stayed on the team. Three of the players that were caught but stayed on the team were Ray Tolbert, Landon Turner, and Mike Woodson. Tolbert and Woodson of course were two of the best players so of course that helped their cause. Knight did dismiss players, but he also let things slide with really good players at times
