Can we all at least agree that...

This years team has no more excuses and that its do or leave for Coach Crean?
I think we have the talent. I believe we have the depth. No reason this shouldn't be a elite eight to final four team.

No matter what u believed last season I think we all know that it's put up or "get out of here time". Am I off base?

I don't think you are.

This is exactly where I'm at. Honestly, I was at the "whenever Brad Stevens is ready, pull the trigger!" as soon as the season ended. Stevens is doing very well in Boston, but I truly believe he will be our coach in the next 2-3 years. This season I am making a concentrated effort to enjoy this team no matter what. The last two seasons have been dreadful to be a part of. I will be happy during the ups and I wont give a crap during the lows. No more melancholy.

I guess I have a little problem at this point saying it is do or leave.  So you are saying if we win the B1G both regular season and the tournament.  Get a one seed for the NCAA, then get beat by a last second shot in the Sweet 16 then Crean is gone.

Or if we barely scrape into the NCAA tournament, the team catches fire and wins until the E-8.  He is good for another year.

I just don't believe in the one game makes or breaks a coach scenario, and that is what you have layed out.

In my opinion, this is the make or break year for Crean. Final four or bust. This is the year this team is going to win. We will lose:

Yogi

JB2

Hanner

Troy

Zeisloft

at minimum. Unless he wins big, he doesn't deserve to come back the year after. He hasn't built this program for long term success. So next year, win big, recruit big, even out the classes, or no dice on more time. IMO

From ESPN article about off season winners/losers:

No one had a better offseason than Indiana’s coach. The Hoosiers were worried about losing any and all of the trio of Yogi FerrellJames Blackmon Jr. and Troy Williams. Crean is getting all three back, and Indiana added Thomas Bryant (No. 22 on ESPN 100), one of the most talented big men in the country. The Hoosiers go into the 2015-16 season with high expectations and should compete for one of the top spots in the Big Ten.

This is a 100% Sweet 16 team.
This is a 50% Elite 8 Team.
This is a 25% Final Four team.
This is a 10% Championship Game Team
This is a 5% National Champion Team.

I expect Sweet 16 or Crean should be done (baring injuries)
From the Sweet 16 on its a crap shoot in my opinion. It all depends on matchups and who is hot.

I will call this year a success with the elite 8. I don't think you can ever be upset with your season if you were in the Elite 8. It takes a ton of skill, and a decent amount of luck to advance past the Elite 8. You need the ball to bounce your way.

Well let's say we achieve a sweet sixteen but not an elite eight. Would u feel that Coach Crean should return? For me after all these year at least one elite eight performance is due.

I'm not factoring just one game but past seasons as well. I think if Indiana is indeed "Indiana". One elite eight appearance should be due in his tenure.

Yep this is it. My foot is hanging off of the Crean train and dragging the ground. (And I'm only hanging on because I have to) He's an underachieving season away from me digging that foot into the ground and getting ripped off of the train while also getting sucked under the train and run over. In this case, my family sues him for BERGAMILLITRILLION dollars.

This concludes my metaphor taken too far.

I'm not a firm believer on coaches keeping their job because they hit a certain bench mark or not. To me, if benchmarks are ever brought up, something isn't right to begin with.

As for your question, to me it's a matter of how that Sweet 16 game is played. Should Indiana lose a well fought game on a buzzer beater? Well that's just march madness. It happens. Now if it's a complete destruction to a lesser quality team, that's another topic.

I think if Indiana reaches the Sweet 16 again Crean will be here the following year without a doubt. We may have underperformed in the past, but that would still be:

4/5 years in the tournament.
3/4 tourney runs in Sweet 16
Tourney record = 6-4 over the last 4 tournaments.

Looking big picture. Being in the Sweet 16 three out of the last 5 isn't horrible...

The 2015-16 team is not the 2012-13 team.

Look I know u had a crush with Cody and all but we are way more athletic (as a whole) faster and deep. Each team faces its own strengths and weaknesses and its up to the coach to make this team go farther then 2012-13 team.

You do have a point.

But is it good enough for Indiana? If it is I fear we no longer should consider ourselves an elite program. Not with those expectations. We bring in the talent we should expect more.

Bob Knight would have loved to have been to the Sweet Sixteen in three of his last five years in Btown.

Cody's team was certainly better, the only thing is, they weren't as deep as this team will be. That was a championship caliber team without doubt. This team could be too

I think we've already reached that point (no more excuses).  7 years is enough.   This season, Indiana will be very good.   No doubt about it, and it will be a fun year.   That said, Crean has to win consistently.  No spikes; no lulls like 2013-2014; and no more seasons when Indiana finishes 8th or 9th in the Big Ten.   He has to be a consistent top 3-4 finisher in the conference; has to be ranked in the top 25 consistently, has to avoid the NCAA tournament bubble and be a consistent top 5 seed; and he has to show he can do that.   In his career, he never has.

Like we all want players to improve; it's time for Tom Crean to improve.   I've been saying that for a couple of years now.   He's the coach at Indiana right now, and I'm rooting for his team.   But I think it's put up or shut up time; and I think the 2016-2017 season is more important for judging Tom Crean than the upcoming season is.    He got Indiana to #1 in the country....but they had a hard fall immediately after.  That can't happen again.    It's about consistency now.
