Troy Williams returning to IU!!!!!!

Recommended Posts

Troy has to develop his shot and his defense but I don't see a close resemblance between him and PG. Same height and similar build but their games are completely different. Even if Troy improves his jump shot, it will never be his go to move (like it is for PG). Troy will always rely on his athleticism. I know its an old comparison but he needs to look at Oladipo and make himself a taller version. Oladipo improved his jumper, but it isn't his go to move. Oladipo still uses his athleticism to make plays at the bucket

When George was a sophomore at Fresno State, he shot 35% from 3 point land.  I wasn't at all comparing Williams to what George is now.  George is far more complete than he was in college, and that's what Williams needs to be.   Not saying he is or will be an identical player, but the transformation George has made was similar to the one WIlliams needs to make.    PG's go to move is not a jumper, by the way....it's still a baseline drive or something toward the rim.   He just has a jumper that keeps people honest, which is what Williams needs at the next level.

Thats exactly what it is.

I thought so too but then why use Instagram to announce it? Sure the school followed with a release but that was IU - the info from Troy and Boo were pretty tame and did not fit the idea of hyping him

No I definitely understand that PG would be a great role model for Williams but I guess will have to stand pat at that because I still don't see any similarity, even with the stats and whatnot.
Williams reminds me more of someone like Gerald Green. Green has developed a shot in the last 5 years but relies mostly on his driving, dunking, and athleticism.
And another point I guess we'll just have to disagree about is PG's game now. PG, in my mind and through all the games Ive seen, definitely relies on his jumper. He does use his athleticism to drive to the bucket but relies on his 3 and his midrange jumper

Either way, he's a good role model because of how he transformed his game from "high flying athlete" (which is what I think Troy basically is today) to "complete player." Troy Williams has every tool necessary to be a successful NBA 3.   He's simply got to refine and develop almost every part of his game in order to make himself a sure-fire 1st rounder, as I don't think he's close to that right now.    What I'd love is to see Oladipo (who worked his backside off for 3 years with a private trainer and at Cook Hall) come back and talk with him..  In the NBA, Oladipo's a 2 and Williams is a 3, but their games are similar enough...  Oladipo played on that Team USA after his freshman year, and after that, just completely transformed himself.

Williams certainly improved between years 1 and 2; but Oladipo's improvement was off the charts.   I think if anyone here, during Oladipo's freshman year would have said "there's the #2 overall NBA pick in 2 years;" people would have laughed him off the board.   Oladipo is an exception to most rules, simply because he is truly a self-made NBA star.   That doesn't happen very often.

Paul George is similar to me, plays the same position as Williams, and has similar athletic ability along with similar size....which is why I said I think he'd be a good comparison and a good benchmark.   I'm excited for next season because even if Bryant doesn't come in and perform like an All American, what he DOES do is allow everyone else to play positions where they "fit."   WIlliams in particular should benefit from this; and I think he'll be ready a year from now in large part because of the team around him; and especially if he gets good advice and coaching in this off season....it's critical for him.

People were saying he should model himself after PG, I say Scottie Pippen.  Much more similar in style and frame.  He has the athleticism and height.  Not saying he will be Scottie Pippen, but could play a similar style.  Personally, I think he will end up a better pro than college player.  NBA fits his playing style better.

Troy could be Scottie Pippen in the league if he puts in the time and really dedicates himself.

Lol. Scottie Pippen was one of the best defensive players in the history of the game, maybe the best perimeter defender we've seen so far. Troy isn't anywhere close to anything like that defensively.
