Potential fallout from coaching change

Recommended Posts

And you seriously believe that he would leave the Celtics, the NBA and all that money because IU fans really want him to and his dad played football there.

Delusional.

You won't know unless you make the call.  What if Alabama football said "we shouldn't go after Saban, there's no way he'll leave the NFL and that money to come to a down program in college"?

Keep him. IU has had 4 coaches, counting DD, in he last 15 years. Can't build a consistent winner if you can't consistently lose coaches.

Stability for the sake of stability does nothing.  A coach has stability because he wins, not the other way around.

Crean's been here 7 years and Mike Davis had 6, so 13 of those 15 years is taken up by 2 coaches; neither of which have earned the kind of stability people want to give out.  The other two years was a coach that broke NCAA regulations while on probation, and the other was an interim not here long to enough to really consider.

I'm not sure we would lose a ton of players. Not every coaching transition goes the way 2008 did for us.  There may be a guy here or there that goes, but most of the team will stay.

I agree with you that I don't think Stevens leaves the Celtics. Maybe he decides someday that he doesn't want to be in the NBA, but I don't think he jumps ship after just 2 years.

And that transition went the way it did because of the behind the scenes disaster that was Samson's program.  The house needed to be cleaned, and in a bad way.

I'm not saying keep of fire him but understand if he goes, it's 2008 all over again. JBJ, RJ, Yogi and Troy are gone. What, you honestly think they are playing for the name on the front of the jersey? Recruits that we have contacts with won't come. Oh yeah, and one more thing,

No one has ever given me a good reason why a guy would leave the BOSTON CELTICS, one of the premier franchises in all of American professional sports, to coach a 7th place team in the B1G who's fan base just ran off the coach that won them their first regular season title in 20 years less than 2 years ago.

Just saying, watch what you wish for.

No way its 2008 all over again. No NCAA issues. Yes, there will be some turnover but no way everybody leaves.New guy may bring better players with him.  So, with your line of thinking we keep this guy forever because we are afraid we may lose some current players? Talk about short term thinking....

There's some other hilarious stuff posted on Crean's Wikipedia page. Read it quick before it's taken down.

Edit: You gotta laugh. It's more fun than crying.

The personal life stuff is beyond childish. Guess I shouldn't be surprised by some people anymore. Don't care what you think of him as a coach.

You do realize this is the same program that fired one of the greatest coaches of all-time in September right?

Apples and oranges. When unethical conduct warrants a coach to be fired in the eyes of the administration then a change is made...immediately. Sampson was canned in February.

But when you're fired for normal reasons you obviously do it right after the season so the next coach has time to piece something together.

That September transition went real well for the program, didn't it?

Unless it's the only time you can make the change, July is less than an ideal time for a coaching change.

You do realize Bob's time was 6 years past? One of the greatest coaches of all time that went out like a punk!

To piggyback what you said here, we as a program have a history of letting coaches stay long past when they should have been let go.  Would it honestly surprise anyone that Crean is here for a couple of seasons?  Knight, Davis, Sampson, and Crean all will have stayed longer than they should have by the time this is all said and done.

In a few years I would be all for this. He is MSU's head recruiter and I think he could do well but it would be a few years before he was ready probably.

I'd be happy to take him now and roll the dice.  Another couple of years and he's that much closer to being MSU head coach.

Unless Fred Glass was blowing smoke up everyone's kiester, CTC is here for at least another year.  He gave Mike Miller of the Herald-Times an exclusive interview today.   I think the following is the most important paragraph:  “Tom is definitely not coaching for his job on Saturday,” Glass said. “I’ve always thought that was silly whether it was pro football, where this guy’s gotta win this wild card playoff game or that guy’s gotta win two games in the conference tournament or something to keep his job. I just think that’s silly, whether it’s the NFL, or college football or college basketball. I believe you’ve got to look at the body of work. For Tom and his years here, I think the body of work is pretty darn good and certainly merits his continued leadership of the program.”

Glass publicly announces Crean isn't coaching for his job Saturday. Lawyer speak? I say so! If Crean returns, watch attendance next year. Haha.

I skipped my annual 2 games this year because I knew we were a sham of a team with little chance of doing anything. Granted, I missed a good IU/Butler game, but my excitement for the product and hopes for the season were in alignment. Sad...

Fred may very well think that. But when people higher up than Fred disagree, he will probably lose that debate.
