Potential fallout from coaching change

Recommended Posts

I've gone a little foggy on some things since its been a while since I've intensely followed basketball recruiting. Is it similar to football recruiting in that when a coaching change happens its not uncommon for them to bring recruits from their previous school to their new one? How binding is the LOI really?

All depends on if the player is in it for the coach or in it for the school. Kingsley Okoroh committed to Tennessee one day to play for Martin and the next day he switched to Cal when Cuanzo took the job. I'm not positive, but I believe a coaching change releases you from your LOI?

The article states that Crean gets $11 million if he is fired after April 1. So why not fire him on March 31. This team isn't going anywhere anyway. I blame Glass for all this . It was a bad hire to begin with and yes I stated that vociferously when it happened.

Thanks! I'd like to see how Archie can recruit at a school like IU. He seems to be doing fine numbers wise at Dayton but for the current class they're mostly unheralded 3 star kids. Doesn't matter since he's putting out a winning product though

Isn't the buyout $12 million, drops to $11 on April 1 and drops again in July?

Tough to do that at the higher levels. Pretty much everyone in the A10 is recruiting unheralded 3 stars and developing them. Shows that he does a great job of development. But at this level, you have to recruit 4 and 5 stars and develop them. Would be interesting to see how he could do at this level. His brother certainly transitioned well.

Yes... drops to $7.5M on July 1st. Obviously would save the school a ton of money but at that point the (college) coaching carousel has come to a halt. Indiana could do it, though... big enough program to make a big time hire regardless of the time of year.

Stevens won't be available (theoretically) until April 16th at the earliest, the day after the Celts regular season ends. As bad as they have been this year, they still could actually make the playoffs in the horrid Eastern Conference. Just  2 games back of the 8-seed right now despite being 23-35. Yeesh the East bad.

Sean Miller has shown his ability to be a fantastic recruiter at Arizona. Archie is a better coach, IMO, and may have his brother's knack for recruiting at a higher level as well. It would be fascinating to see how he would develop as HC at IU. He's young so there is the potential for building a dynasty here.

( My dream hire is still Stevens but I fear that is a pipedream at this point. )

Edit: I think most current players would stay if a coach like Archie is hired. We would just lose the guys who were already planning to leave.

We missed out on Sean Miller back when we signed Crean. I would be up for bringing in Archie as the coach this time around

Fairly certain Greenspan hired Crean

The only thing Im afraid of is that the administration and the university won't listen to the fans. Look at where we are now and compare it to Davis last few years. Are we in a better place than we were then? Not really. Same results. Crean doesn't have a lot going for him this year. We could still turn around and win a few more games, but he has shown over the last 11 games that he just flat out won't adapt and change things between games. Last night we were still running the same offensive and defensive sets that have made us lose 7 of the last 11 games. He doesn't have a lot of promise with his upcoming classes either. Sounds like he has started to rub recruits and high school coaches the wrong way. I just don't see much changing if he stays. But I think the University is satisfied with the mediocre level of play. Very sad. We need to do something as fans to let them know how we feel, but I just don't see how we can actually do that

If you want to send a message, don't go to the games. An empty house against MSU forces Fred's hand

What kind of message does that send to current players, future players and future coaches? You want Yogi and them to stick around, but the students boycott the last game of the season because of the coach. Boo them when they walk off the court. Yeah right.

Also, what coach wants to step into a situation like that?
