Potential fallout from coaching change

Recommended Posts

hope the door doesn't hit you on the way out, Fred.

couldnt agree more. If you understand basketball, you see all the mistakes Crean makes. It's astounding. So what, he can beat New Orleans and pad his record. Those games are gone and now look. This is a very talented team too. More talented next year? Nah. Another mediocre year with no hopes of improvement will drive me up a wall.

If the booing, fans leaving early, and the product on the court aren't enough to get Glass's attention then he needs to be gone yesterday.

Not sure if anyone has seen this, but I went to check his coaching record after looking at other coaches like Donovan's record and found this gold. I'm sure it won't stay long.

"Thomas Crean (born March 25, 1966) is an American college basketball coach. You have only heard of him due to Dwyane Wade. To the fans' dismay, he is somehow still currently the head coach of the Indiana Hoosiers men's basketball team. Prior to that he served as head coach at Marquette University (1999–2008), where the program got better when he left, averaged 20 wins a year and made six postseason appearances, including the 2003 NCAA Final Four, due solely to Wade and a sprinkle of Travis Diener."

As of the time of this post, still there. Too bad that only the 1st 2 paragraphs were edited.

I wouldn't put much stock in what Fred Glass says, he has to publicly support TC until he's not the coach anymore, when that time is, is the million dollar question. Ot in this case the 11 million dollar question.

He doesn't have to speak publicly though. Once he decides to do an interview, yes he has to support him, but he didn't have to accept the interview. Honestly just made me more angry that he did that. If he isn't willing to do what is long overdue, he can go ahead and leave as well.

Unless Fred Glass was blowing smoke up everyone's kiester, CTC is here for at least another year. He gave Mike Miller of the Herald-Times an exclusive interview today. I think the following is the most important paragraph: “Tom is definitely not coaching for his job on Saturday,” Glass said. “I’ve always thought that was silly whether it was pro football, where this guy’s gotta win this wild card playoff game or that guy’s gotta win two games in the conference tournament or something to keep his job. I just think that’s silly, whether it’s the NFL, or college football or college basketball. I believe you’ve got to look at the body of work. For Tom and his years here, I think the body of work is pretty darn good and certainly merits his continued leadership of the program.”

So Tom's body of work a record barely above 500 is pretty darn good. Fred's comment is laughable.

I bet his buyout is less $$

GM's/AD's/owners/presidents say that stuff all the time, to keep some kind of camaraderie within the team. If someone in an executive position ever was honest about a coach/manager's employment, their ass would be on the firing line too.

I think he had to say something. I posted a couple of hours earlier wondering if he had commented yet. I assumed he would and thought he would be supportive. Now that being said, he does a good job of sounding convincing.

My problem with this is him doing the interview. He knows the fan base is to say the least in a very foul mood and want change now. Why go into the interview and stir everything up even more? This was a very dumb move on his part IMO.

Sure CTC's record would be fantastic if he were at a school like Penn State or Clemson or South Carolina or something. But at Indiana, it's not acceptable. Double digit losses are NOT acceptable to me.

Translation:  He'd be fine somewhere that doesn't give a crap about basketball.  I agree.

1) You keep good terms with the media. If you think IU has lost them already; imagine denying interviews with even the most local of outlets(IDS/BT-H).

2) In the mind of an organization head, keeping the people in-house comfortable is more important than telling the fans straight out that the coach is in trouble. Outside of something miraculous, Glass probably already knows what's going down as well as the staff and the players. If he doesn't, then he's really lost the plot and McRobbie will give him a proper booting.

I've done something like that before.  Compare his (now) 16 year career with the first 16 of the top coaches in the game and he pales in comparison, it's really not even close.

People say Calipari isn't much of a coach but he was more successful before he got to UK than Crean has been in his entire career.

EDIT:  It was still there at the time of this edit.

I still think that him coming out saying this is alienating the fans even more. The fans are already upset and he does not need to stir that pot. If there is a change made the media will be all over it and want interviews so he would be fine with them granting this after the change is made. I just have a problem with pouring salt in the wounds of the fans, which is not needed at this point.

How about the fans pouring salt on the wound? We've kinda beat this horse to death.

Honestly the only reason most of the fans are mad at Glass is because of Crean. If you would say the fans are pouring salt in the wound of how Crean is doing I would agree, but Glass is causing a lot of the pressure he is feeling himself with statements like he made tonight.

Agree, two different animals, most of the criticism I was referring to is for TC.
