Not say crean is bad coach just questioning some of his choice

Recommended Posts

Last game against Rutgers Troy Williams started to get in a rhythm he had a dunk and a heck of a rebound then went down and got to the stripe! Now crean decides he wants to take Troy out?? Why??? Don't you want to ride a hot hand like that?
Then same kind of scenario in the Purdue game we are rolling up 20 to 12 and then we sub like 4 kids out breaks momentum and let em back in the game???
Anyone have thoughts on this?

I just feel he subs to much in my opinion

some times he's a momentum killer I understand where you're coming from sometimes you don't have to be Mr nice guy as a coach if a players got a hot hand you let him play til he says take me out

His 3x5 card dictates his choices whether its in game decisions or subbing. Watch him double check it just before tip off to make sure he hasn't forgotten who's guarding the other teams center. Our point guard is the obvious choice.

ok I will just stay away from this one since I am uncertain how to debate why crean subs out the hot hand without bringing up anything about crean lol. I honestly though believe he does use the card and all his subs are on a timed and pre planned basis and not what is happening in the game. Just my theory that is all.

Drives me nuts too. It's so often at the worst possible times. Although, in game adjustments have always been a strength of mine (as a hockey coach especially). Won many games by watching games closely and making the right adjustments. Crean honestly wishes he had the UK platoon roster because he likes running hockey substitutions.

I think he has a hard time going with the flow of the game and trusts his matchups he circles pregame. His subs seem to be predetermined and have little bearing on what the game is giving us.

His subs definitely seem predetermined and he has to consult the magical index cards to see what they say.

I wish I had a nickel for every time I wondered why a particular lineup was on the floor.

That particular situation in the Rutgers game, I thought Crean played it perfectly. Troy had two fouls, I forget the exact timing of the situation, but Crean took him out for several minutes. He then put him back in with I think 4-5 minutes left in the half. The goal there as a coach is to "steal" 2-3 minutes from him, hope he makes a couple plays, then pull him before he gets his 3rd foul.

It actually worked to perfection, and the perfect chance to pull him, had he made the second one, was when he was at the line. I think there was 2 minutes left when he got pulled. As you said, he had a dunk and another bucket in those 2-3 minutes and was pulled before getting the 3rd.

There has to be a reason he does it but i don't think anyone has ever figured it out. It's just something we have to live with I guess.

And yes a lot of the lineups are really strange, but again he's doing it for some reason which no one knows. I don't think we will ever know.

Let's not forget Troy also had a few turnovers in such a short time, so maybe that was a reason too.
