I agree. Might not have been the best coach or got the fairest shake at IU but I will always remember the 2002 run we had and how we were able to beat Duke that year under him.

He seemed like a nice guy who was in way over his head. IU as your first head coaching gig? Following Bob Knight? And the way his tenure ended? That would've been difficult for the most experienced coach! Impossible for a new guy.

That 2002 run was one of the highlights of my senior year of high school. Living in Bloomington I remember going down to Kirkwood after we beat Duke, Kent State and Oklahoma. Great memories.

My whole family and extended family are all Terps. I watched the 2002 Championship game from Cole Field House rooting against Indiana. I greeted the Terps as they came off the bus as champions and have a dozen shirts from the event.

The thing that went through my mind is the total polarity between Davis's attitude toward Indiana and the other who has been begged to come back. No comparison as coaches? Maybe! How about the comparison as humble human beings.

If it helps, the only two schools I really applied to for college were Indiana and Maryland (I also applied to one school as a joke so that I could leave the acceptance letter where a friend would see it and told her I was going to school with her. Worth it. Hilarious.). And I chose Indiana! Isn't that what matters? We were all young once.

I got the chance to meet him once when I was young. He came to Fort Wayne for the holiday tournament (some of the best high school basketball you get to watch in a 3 day strecth) to watch James Hardy play. The crowd was loving him and got to the point where they needed to pull security so he could watch in peace. Once the game was over he told the security to set him up a table so he could talk to everyone that wanted to talk to him. I don't know of to many coaches willing to halt their recruiting trip just to talk to all the IU fans.

I will be rooting for him---I always felt a little sorry for him because no way was he ready to go from assistant coach to head coach at one of the top programs in the country---and it showed.  That said--he brought us great memories of what 3 point shooting can do and he brought us DJ White---one of my favorite Hoosiers!

What a great article.  Echoing others, I think Davis deserves a very warm welcome on his return.  I always thought he got a raw deal at UAB, and I'm really happy to see him having success at Texas Southern.  How he is able to hold no grudge and continually praise IU is truly admirable.

I think davis was nice but he was so aggravating to watch smile on the sideline while we were losing lol. I hope we give him a standing o but then we have to win. This game has epic disappointment written all over it
