Waaaaaait a second.

Ya was officially hired as an LSU assistant just three months ago. So something happened - something went wrong. Unless he had a special clause in his LSU contract that allowed him to immediately leave for Oregon (his alma mater). And I have no idea why LSU would sign him for that if there was a chance that Altman could immediately poach. This would be the equivalent of Kenny Johnson leaving IU this week to become an assistant at Maryland, his alma mater. If that happened I'd be more than a little suspicious (it won't happen).

I hate to be that guy, but I'm not sure that Ya was or wasn't a positive at IU, and I'm not sure this move after three months isn't a red flag.

Tell me why it's all okay! Having a ton of trouble with this.

He’s not replacing anyone as nearly as I can tell. Looks like they just created a seat for him. No clue what the circumstances are but  it may be as simple as him getting down there and realizing McMahon’s in even worse  trouble than he thought, and I think that dude’s dead man walking, and him just trolling for lifelines rather than having to do it all again next offseason.

Even our most beloved Jordy is guilty by association. Those guys stunk.

(I could be talking about the past IUBB staff AND Assembly Ball TBT team here)

If only Milly K wasn't still absolutely tearing it up in the Summer League and was Assembly Ball-ing out on Saturday, we would have destroyed those two bit punks from (checks notes) "Fail Harder."

Staff was clearly not on the same page.  Ya can really recruit.  I think he’s got good ball instincts too.  Solid, solid pick up for Oregon in my opinion but time will tell.  Curious how Altman and him will vibe.

I would assume if that Woody hadn't gotten fired, he would have lost Ya to Oregon as well.  Sounds like he wants to be at his alma mater.

You and me are switching 'cynic/optimist' profiles on this one, Doc.

For me? Ya was a good recruiter when quietly delivering a bag was a method toward good recruiting. Now? the market determines pay and Ya seems to have delivered more than a couple of guys who were at IU primarily to collect a paycheck; not to contribute to a team and become part of a university.

Yeah, I guess we are.  I’m glad to have moved on from the past regime in basically every way.  However I think Woody had his ways about him and lacked a clear and concise plan for all things. That includes from recruting, team building, and on court stuff from practices to games. I think Ya can be a beneficial good cop coach. He connects well with kids imo.  I could be completely off, but I  think if he’s a guy on a demanding staff he can be a good buddy coach. To me Woody gets the blame. I guess if Ya was our shooting guard scout, he can take the blame too, because no one on the staff could pick the qualities of a SG we needed.

Yeah, the assistant coach is an extension of the head coach.  Hard to assess the individual coaches when the head coach is failing.  Walsh was trying to bail a year before.  They knew.  The huddles were my earliest sign of the dysfunction.  No authority figures.  Just players and random coaches yelling at each other.  Oh, the horror.

His analysis of players is clearly in question.

Here’s the story. Apparently UT was afraid he might not get any eligibility at all and were only hoping for 2 years at the outside.

But Luke Goode played 10 games at the end of a season instead of the beginning, so screw him.

And you wonder why there have been rumblings the last few years of the P4 breaking away from the NCAA to start their own league.  The NCAA really needs to be more consistent with their rulings and not be so scared of being sued anymore.

I’ll go to my grave on this: forget years, age is the factor. Give players unlimited eligibility until the day they turn 25 and their eligibility ends that day. No exceptions or cutouts. If they reclass and start at 17, fine give them 8 years. And they get 1 free transfer on their own and another whenever a HC leaves and other than that they sit a year and it counts within their eligibility window. There, just took 150 pages of the NCAA handbook and distilled it down to 5 sentences. And the lawyers around here will tell me why that’s a legal nonstarter, and I’m sure they’re right, but this is such a cluster and the NCAA has to find a way at to simplify this joke they’ve created.

Kansas coach Bill Self was hospitalized Thursday after experiencing “some concerning symptoms,” the school said. He underwent a procedure to have two stents inserted and is expected to make a full recovery.

Imagine this will be Self’s last year. Legacy is secure. NIL has mitigated some of his advantage. Has had a pretty decent array of health stuff. Has young grand kids. Would be really good on TV. Would be stupid to push the envelope and he’s not a stupid guy.

Agree. And Izzo just agreed to a 2 year exhibition agreement with UConn.  I wonder if that is his tentative timeline.

KU will be a really interesting job to watch when it comes open. Pre-NIL it was 1 of the big 4 jobs. Now I kind of don’t think so. I’m not sure at this point it’s any better a job than IU, which is really good with a high ceiling but not UK/UNC/Duke. Their fans will be talking about a Oats/Golden/Hurley type and I’m willing to bet it’s gonna be closer to DDV.

Or Jacque Vaughn. Former long-time NBA Assistant and NBA head coach, all-time great as a KU player, recently added as the KU top assistant coach.

My hunch is that they'll pre-appoint him as a direct-dial hire.
