(2016) C Thon Maker

Recommended Posts

RG: Being the height that you are at seven feet, and personally based on the games I’ve seen you play, your defensive game seems to be ahead of your offensive game. Despite all the talk about how well you can handle the ball and shoot, do you ever feel that you could be as comfortable in the post offensively as you are on the perimeter?
TM: As the season began [with Orangeville Prep], I was playing more of a perimeter role. But as the season wore on, it became clear I needed to move to the post more often to better help my team. So now I’m playing the five, and I’ve been getting better at it, but this year for me has been more about being the focal point on defence. For me, I always believe if you can’t stop someone then why you playing the game? You know? So I had to make sure I put my team in the best position to win, and this year that was through leading the defence.
Some players can get caught up in the offensive side of the game too often. For example, if you drop 40 on a team but the guy you were guarding dropped 20, you basically had a 20 point night! You might think you were putting in work, but you weren’t, you were just average. That’s just the way I see it.

I want Thon. We need Thon.

Nike Hoop Summit: World Team measurements and practice analysis

Thon Maker measured well at 7-foot with a 7-3.25 wingspan, plus has put on some weight to get up to 218. He looks bigger, and with his broad shoulders it looks like his frame would be able to stand another 15-20 pounds. He's working with the big men here (his perimeter skill level has led some to speculate if his future is as a massive wing a la Kevin Durant), and looked pretty solid during practice despite Labissiere getting the better of him. He made a couple of 3s, and used his length to block a few shots in the lane. It's fair to say though that he still doesn't look totally comfortable in the post with his footwork, and that will be the biggest place for him to work to improve.

I still think posters need to cool the hype on this kid. It's been reported he's not as good as his highlights yet he's being built up like he walks on water.

. Honestly, Jerry Meyer is the ONLY person that I've seen say that. Plenty of other noteworthy scouts completely disagree. Meyer watched him in Laporte against LaLumiere. Could have had a terrible day. Does he need work? Absolutely! Is he still a game changer for IU? Absolutely!

I thought Duany Duany worked for AHOPE, not actually IU?

I'm referring to his and Kueth's parents. IIRC, one of if not both are/were professors at IU. I know their sons went to one of the Bloomington HS's, then went to 'Cuse and Wisconsin.

Don't think he walks on water but if Yogi stays and Thon makes it on campus we should be final 4 or bust. That is the hype. Thon will be one of numerous guys who can lead us to the final 4. Thon doesn't need to walk on water.

He will have moments of brilliance followed by moments of scratching your head. He would help IU, no question about it, but he won't be near Zeller levels of help. Closer to Vonleh, but probably won't even get to Vonleh's level in year one.

As for him being a 1-n-D

I don't see it. From what i have read on him....Education is a HUGE part of who he is. Now, will he stay for the entire 4 years~ Personally, i doubt it. However, I think he would stay for his degree. Remember, he is not from the U.S. He is originally from the continent of Africa where a University degree is a lot of times worth more than money. I personally know quite a few folks from Africa and they are all about an education. The majority of people do not get the chance to go to school. Especially where he is from in Africa.

I think the idea behind getting an education is the notion that this will lead to him having a better life than those who did not get out. That is certainly true but if has the talent to be one and done that too is a means to enjoy a better life, perhaps much better than the education route.

From everything Ive seen of him he will be closer to Zeller. Vonleh had trouble scoring in high school. Ive watched multiple games of Thon's and he runs the floor just as good as Zeller and has a WAY better jump shot.

I do not think he will stay any more than 2 years. I also think he would play as a step out, face up four. He would help us a lot and fit perfectly into Creans system.

He is already listed as a lottery pick for 2016 mock drafts so I don't see him really staying past one year. I think Thon Maker kind of defines how basketball has changed. He can battle down low and he feels just as comfortable on the wing. He can create his own offense as well

yeah, that PG that Vonleh had in High School never got him the ball. He rarely ever demanded it either. I remember watching his HS games thinking, WTH!, with that little PG.
