Iowa will be back to being .500 again next year with held the budget at best than the top conference teams have.

And where will Indiana be? Tough to say right now.

Threads easily get derailed when people say it's "ridiculous" that people "ignore" the "coaching failures" of a team that just went to the elite 8 while we were at home and they spent half as much as us lol.

Hopefully we can surpass .500 in the Big Ten next year and DDV shows he is well on his way to succeeding like Dusty. He will have to do some of what McCollum has done first.

Perfectly content to leave it at that and let the thread get back to its original purpose. Looking forward to having something substantive to talk about once we start signing guys.

It's not a false regular season comparison... they finished with a better record and McCollum has a better D1 career winning percentage

8 years of data compared to 2 years of data for D1 winning percentage?

Yep. DDV's past two seasons in P5 his winning percentage is .578. McCollum's one year of P5 is .649.

We will see how it shakes out over the course of their careers

Just for the record, St Louis is going to spend 12 million on a roster next year.  So unless we are going to spend big boy money, we aren't getting that much better.  So maybe some of Woody's friends can quit crying and write some checks again.

My thoughts as well.  The spending across the sport has gone wild. Takes a big number to get a competitive advantage.

Agreed. But this idea we need to bash on our coach and prop up a guy who finished .500 in conference but went on a run in the tournament is a joke. Get behind out team or get off the bus. You can get back on once we have a roster and but I’m tired of hearing about Iowa. Nobody wants to be Iowa. The goal is to be what Michigan is. Talk about Dusty May but not Bo Ryan 2.0.

I hear you.  But if we can’t “be” Iowa, we have zero chance being Michigan.

We wasted a freaking year “figuring it out.”

That’s wild. They have a Walmart heir cutting them checks or something?

True, but eventually water will find its level IMO.

The sport is popular, but not popular enough for the ridiculously wealthy to write annual eight figure checks. And the scale will never be supported with thousand dollar boosters. Sure; there will be annual outliers like BYU last year, but eventually if those BYU mega-boosters don't get enough satisfaction from their donations they will relatively move on.

Would be really interested to know how much $ IU has/spends and how in NIL this year. Need more transparency in NIL (and rules but that’s another topic).
Those of you who know (I don’t) - sites or people with credible data who track or compare college bball program NIL money and spending?

Unfortunately none of the NIL deals are public so it’s hard to know. There was a tweet out during the sweet 16 that Duke had the highest roster left at 12 million and then the next few were 10 million. I assume we’re in the top 15 but it wouldn’t shock me if 5-15 are all right next to each other

Keep elevating staff talent. We're only as talented the connections we have to talent. I think our recruiting classes will get better. The incoming class need time to mature physically.

Gurcak(sp) Fru and Bonke and maybe the Hammond kid from Santa Clara is where my interest is currently at. I really like the young pg from Colorado but I really liked Rice when we got him, I see some similarities.

We have multiple big Euros in the final four, there has to be something right about it.

Euros have been ahead of us developing bigs for at least a generation. Most of the best ones are fully pro in a good league by 19, though.

I don’t have quotes but my eyes aren’t positive. I don’t think anyone should be sold. Love the style but first year was okay.

100% agree:

I also don’t think anyone should be sold.

I like the style.

First year was kinda ‘okay’.

Yeah, I’m hopeful but not sold. I don’t think anyone should be off the train yet either. This upcoming season is massive for a multitude of reasons.

Here’s a take from someone that is pro-Devries biased, but knows ball:

"I saw some good things, but also, it was their first year, and they had limited time to build a roster. But I saw good things that they do like get up and down, let the ball fly, make the extra pass, certain things like that."

Top 30 committed recruit.   Can’t find it now but one of the national guys that post good offensive sets(hoops vision or Jordan S) posted a clip that said don’t worry Hoosiers fans while not going great here on some offensive sets that DeVries offense creates.   Showed good action of getting wide open shots and spacing and cutting that got wide open layups.    Like with anything though you can pick apart the bad and ignore the good or point out the good and ignore the bad.   Don’t the guy forgot how to coach just didn’t preform to the level most wanted.  Still most on here thought the roster was crap and poorly put together with mid major players and played the second toughest B1G conference schedule  and he was still first 4 out in a year where 6 teams in the B1G made the sweet 16 and 2 are in the Final 4

Nothing that has happened in the past year gives me any bravado or confidence about where we are headed besides the fact I know Dolson WANTS to win. That’s all.

DeVries has actually taken me the other direction.  He wasn’t a savant but he also didn’t do much coaching malpractice. He seems like an adequate coach. I want it to work for him because I like his style and him as a person.

Looking forward to see what we’ve learned and what we can pull off in the portal.  We’ve virtually put ourselves in a near full rebuild.

Some growing parallels with the women’s program under Moren this past season and recruiting to portal this season.

- Moren/women had to rebuild largely from scratch before last season, missed the tourney.
- Team wasn’t deep enough on talent, size and athleticism to compete in the upper half of the B1G
- Headed towards offseason Moren publicly recognized the team needs to get bigger and more athletic.
- She brought in a top flight recruiter/new assistant coach, and he hit the ground running — Moren and her staff now already rolling, twice landing highest ever ranked recruit and the overall highest rated class in program history, athleticism and size being addressed

- DeVries / team missed the tourney undersized and not athletic enough to compete for the most part in top half of B1G

- publicly recognized the team needs to get bigger to compete in conference

- he brought in a top flight talent identifying and connected new assistant coach in Carr, who is expected to play a major role in rebuilding the team

- both now about to see what they can do in the portal to get the team built well for next season

My biggest fear. Another decade of Crean like results might beat my fandom to a bloody pulp. At least Woody and Archie has the dignity to suck hard enough that there was no doubt they needed to go.

CDD has said he wants to get bigger and more physical this year. That’s the one thing I’ll be looking for in the portal. Woody claiming he wanted to shoot more 3’s and then signing Ballo to go with Reneau along with two guards who were mediocre 3 point shooters made him a dead man walking before May golf season started.
