Quote

Mark Cuban, IU’s wealthiest alumnus, and head football coach Curt Cignetti are around the same age and both from Pittsburgh.  In a report by Richard Johnson for CBS Sports, Cuban says he has bonded with Cignetti over their common upbringing.

“He’s a Pittsburgh guy, and that’s what I really like. Maybe if he wasn’t a Pittsburgh guy, I might not have done it. But, you know, we had that connection,’ Cuban told CBS Sports.

Might not have done what, you ask?

“I gave some to sports this year for the first time ever,” Cuban said. “Typically, I was the exact opposite. I’m not a fan of anything that I believe raises tuition in the least bit. But after getting to talk to Cig and seeing what was going on, they kinda talked me into it.”

Cuban told CBS the amount he gave IU Athletics was a “big number” that wasn’t tethered to a specific cause.  But obviously his connection with Cignetti was the inspiration.  And IU was able to sign several high profile transfers, highlighted by quarterback Fernando Mendoza.

Announced today that Cuban has upped his NIL contribution by a "significant" amount and it's already in the university coffers and available, purely a coincidence we're in the middle of football portal season.  Cuban was quoted as he gives the contribution to Dolson and it's Dolson who makes the allocations.  Absolutely nothing mentioned about how much in total his contribution is or how it should/will be allocated.

This story was not paywalled when I saw it.

If the donation is to the university, then I don't think it can be used for NIL. Right? It can be used to offset the rev share money, though that wouldn't increase the amount that can be paid out. It can also be used to pay for raises for the staff. Or did he actually give it to a collective and it's just getting reported as being given directly to IU?

I think the article is using the university interchangeably with our NIL efforts.

I know IU does a good job getting money routed into NIL so it's not subject to the $21.5M rev share cap.  This $ is for sure NIL.

Do you or anyone have an idea of how much backing $$$ the portal class may need when said and done?

I don't know the exact budget for the roster this year.  But I am pretty sure we're in the top 1/3 in the conference.

This was Cig's goal, and I wasn't sure if that would ever happen.  In Tom Allen's last year, we were basically at the very bottom of the conference.  But our donors/fans have mobilized like wildfire and here we are!
