Demo Posted October 10, 2025 Posted October 10, 2025 Being a Knight-era player may not have been a Powerball win, but that was a good, solid winning lottery ticket for life. The extent to which that dude F’d it up…I swear. Pagoda, OliviaPope40, thebigweave and 2 others 5 Quote

Stuhoo Posted October 10, 2025 Author Posted October 10, 2025 Reasonable to think that Leary has got some habit that he needs to support. Drugs, gambling (most likely), something. Pagoda 1 Quote

Stuhoo Posted October 10, 2025 Author Posted October 10, 2025 It's a pretty short money financial crime - borderline coulda been a civil suit. Financial crimes of under $50k that take investigative work usually do not get much traction - there are so many of them and not enough local detectives with financial crimes investigative experience to cover all of those ones that exist. Leary's likely got more attention because he has a financial crimes conviction record, and recidivists likely get a much longer sentence under Indiana sentencing guidelines. But generally? In my 35+ years of seeing this stuff a financial crime with a loss of under about $250,000 is all but a zero chance of ever getting a federal prosecutive look. And if someone lies to get money but the deal hasn't yet created a loss? That's been quite literally a zero chance of prosecutorial attention from federal or even the newest rookie detective. Probably not all that much complexity to the story. Occam's Razor - the most likely explanation is the one that makes the most sense. Yeah - so in other words he had a terrible grift; just had some name recognition. Quote

One can argue that people (the “victims”) must be ignorant, but guys like Leary prey on the gullible. I have no sympathy for repeat offenders, especially in financial fraud cases. Can’t help but think that Leary knew exactly what he was doing. It's truly a shame that he was ever a part of the Indiana basketball program. Quote
