Canceled his visits to IU and Kansas. I'm going to guess he'll end up at Duke.

So we’ll be portaling for our lead guard? Was the most likely scenario I suppose anyway. Let’s hope we can get Cuban to Steve Balmer our financials in the portal.

Seriously though. I love what Painter has been doing for the past 10 years with coaching and the guys he gets in recruiting.

It can be done without top dollar. Indiana hasn’t proven to have a clue. However, it’ll be DeVries time to give it a try. I have more faith in him than the last 2. I don’t think he’s Painter though.

This has to be a bit at this point right?

I'd comfortably assume that most competitive programs in need of a lead guard will prefer to hit the portal instead of handing the keys over to a freshman anyway.

Yeah, that’s kinda what I was hoping.  Aim big, then portal.   Seemed like we were turned off by the cost of the portal this past season and thought HS kids would be the more affordable way to build.  But we will have a giant hole at PG and many spots.  Curious to see how they get filled.

IMO, too early in the staff's tenure to get a very accurate read into how the staff prefers to operate / strategy for roster building. We will get a sense for that over time after a few cycles are under their belt IMO.

I think cost was an "overweighted" factor in their first cycle because they had to fill 13 spots, so they couldn't pay top dollar for some guys. HS kids being the more affordable way to build makes sense intuitively. Don't think players like Rippey are "build" the program types though. And they definitely won't accept getting paid like one.

Point being, bang for buck, IMO highly rated HS point guards aren't the best value in this market / are big gambles to take. Tying up big money for a guy who may not be able to deliver what you need from him.

I'd rather get the next Javon Small than Rippey or any other freshman. You pair a guy like that with some combo of Allmond, Taylor and Muurinen + some portal guys, you got a pretty solid roster... IMO

Quality pgs and centers will be at a premium in the portal. You really need to be be building those in-house moving forward. Rippey was a surprise to me. I thought we would have a shot there.

I think Duke is the leader here. Scheyer has been really going after him and did an in-home visit with him bringing along their GM Rachel Baker and a couple assistants. I think Jai Lucas had started recruiting him before he left to Miami.

Is Scheyer even gonna hit a speed bump?  Having the resources/Nike/etc, sure help.   He must be a solid enough coach, others have failed with big budgets.

And everybody said they would hit a speed bump after K retired doesn't seem to have happened but it still could.

Exactly. I’m lowkey impressed by what he’s doing, even with the resources.   So much for Indiana’s excuse as the fishbowl crushing a coach.

He’s had some generational talents to help him along.  Doesn’t hurt.
