That's a great story you're giving.  Problem is I don't believe it.  Dolson has his team telling everybody it's not his fault, it's out of his control.  He's such a victim here.

To hell with all that.  He oversees this mess.  He needs to own it.

Yea well Greg Doyel just wrote about it in the IndyStar.

Two very powerful people made the Woody hire happen.  Quinn Buckner, Chairman of the IU Board of Trustees, and Woody’s best friend.  And Steve Ferguson, Chairman of our largest donor, and Woody’s long time mentor.  It’s pretty obvious what happened.  Scott wouldn’t hire some crappy NBA assistant with no college bball experience.  But you can believe whatever you want.

Thanks!  I choose to believe in accountability.  A good leader needs accountability to all his people's successes and failures.  This is unacceptable

He got a raise and extension in May 2024.  He’s not going anywhere.

And who would replace him?  Someone who built up a broken program?  Scott just did that here.

So did Woodson

I was going to say…they’re more “players” involved that in many ways are more influential / powerful than Dolson. If Dolson makes a change without some of these guys signing off on it….that will take massive balls. We can only hope.

There in lies the problem. What value is he as AD if he has no control/power? The basketball team and coach is the most visible/famous aspect of Indiana athletics and he got steamrolled.

Well he’s about to have control.

What was he supposed to do one year into getting hired as AD?  Go against the Chairman of the Board and our biggest donors?  They would have crushed him and he wouldn’t be around to make the Cig hire or this next basketball hire.

Be realistic good grief.

Changing ADs at this point won’t change the dynamics. Until Buckner is out, anyone in the AD position is going to be hamstrung

The idea that the athletic director can’t hire or fire the basketball coach has always seemed absurd to me. It’s the perfect cover story for Dolson, though. He hired, raised, and retained arguably the worst coach in the Big 10 but gets to hide behind the “it’s not my decision” excuse. This off-season will be his time to put up or shut up.

It’s a pretty entertaining narrative that the AD had full control to hire the football coach after he was successful but had no control to when it came to basketball after he was a disaster.

I will use Cathy language “there wasn’t some massive groundswell to hire Woodson” it was literally 2 people.

so yes, it is and was his job to lead the hiring process and had he not failed on his first attempt we wouldn’t have been subjected to these two individuals sway.

What about this past year when he retained Woodson instead of hiring Pearl or May? At some point the dude will have to start doing his job with IU basketball. Cignetti bought him some time, but “the mean donors won’t let me” will only work so long.

It's not a failure to go after Stevens and get a "no."

The two people are two of the most powerful people around IUBB.  There are people more powerful than the AD at IU, it's just how it is.

The good news is out of all the morons that influence IUBB, Scott was apparently the only one who wanted to make a change after last season.  He's one of the good guys.

We'll find out in two months.  If Woody isn't fired after this season then it's fair to question Scott and I would join in with the criticism.

Who was the second person? Ferguson?

Archie getting fired was a no brainer, not some out of left field thing that he couldn’t plan for. To have 0 guaranteed top coaches lined up in advance and ready to go put us in the situation to allow for other morons to step in and say you failed, now let us take over

Getting one "no" isn't a failure.

We all just saw UK's coaching search.  They went to Scott Drew, spent a few days with him, got a no.  They went to Billy Donovan, got a no.  They went to Dan Hurley, spent a few days with him, got a no.  Then they went to Mark Pope, spent a few days, got a yes.

What UK didn't do is freak out after Scott Drew was a no and say you failed Mitch we're hiring our pal from the NBA.

Lol exactly.  The narrative that poor Dolson had no say but he's some superhero that's going to save the day is total bs.

Then you may as well give up.  We're screwed.

We’re comparing the control and ownership of the program for IU football to IU basketball now as if the process was the same? Okay. The two processes couldn’t have been more different. But this is a message board, continue messaging.

That’s fair. We’ll see what he does with Woodson now. It’s just frustrating. Say he fired Woodson last year. Would the IU powers have immediately fired him? Maybe, but I doubt it. Not right away. And there’s no way they’d fire him at this point with the success IU football had + the success May/Pearl could’ve had. It would’ve been a risk, but it would’ve paid off. Instead Dolson played it safe. That’s better for his own job security, and hey I can’t blame a guy for looking out for himself and not rocking the boat, but it ruined yet another IU basketball season.
