Indiana at Tennessee (Exhibition), 10/27 at 3:00 pm SEC+ Network

I read through this thread and want to put my 2 cents. Obviously, this was an exhibition game and in the grand scheme of things, means nothing. But, there is no doubt if IU would have played as bad offensively in the 2nd half as they did in the 1st half, some posters on here would have had a meltdown. I see nothing wrong with others enjoying the win and realizing it is just an exhibition win.

Zakai Ziegler played 37 mins. It's not like Tennessee just "didn't care".

Thoughts from the exhibition:

1.) Myles Rice is by far the best player on the team. He's the one guy this team can't lose and he makes the team go. He's even better than advertised. Definite first-team all-B1G talent.

2.) Ballo is the other guy who can't get hurt. No real backup for him on the roster, so stay healthy big fella. Less offensive minded than I expected, but we were massively spoiled last year. Ware was really good.

3.) A little disappointed in Carlyle. His D was really good and he looked a little taller than I expected, but he seemed to bring very little to the table offensively. It's a night-and-day difference between him and Rice right now in that regard.

4.) Defense was really good, but Tennessee also missed a lot of open shots. It was great to get a road win, even if it was an exhibition, though. It had a big game atmosphere and I'm glad that the game was close. Great environment to get better for later in the year for the team.

5.) The big point of worry from the game is obviously shooting. Still an issue and IU doesn't see improvement in that area from the guys who didn't play due to injury.

Overall, much to be optimistic about.

This pretty much nails it.

Unless Carlyle can become a 40% 3 point shooter or find a role as a driver/distributor I think a lot of his minutes need to go to Galloway.

I watched TJD last night and his effort to box out was outstanding.  I am hoping Reneau will improve his rebounding.  Ballo will be a huge help in that regard I think.  With our lineup, rebounding should not ever be problem and if it is, its a coaching/E&E problem.

Mgbako can shoot it.  We know Goode can shoot it.  Reneau can kinda shoot it.  If Rice or Carlyle can shoot it, then you'd hope shooting will take care of itself.

The effort was great.  I still want to see more transition ball than i'm seeing with some quick hitters.  With our big front court we probably won't see the pace I'm hoping to see.

Which is kind of silly if we don’t play fast since Ballo is definitely used to it being at Arizona the last two years and them being a top 25 tempo team. Half of their offense is the big man sprinting down the court for an early dump off and layup

I finally watched the game through YouTube and I seen a several things that were alarming to me.
1) We gave up a lot of open 3’s and if they would have made 3 or 4 we may have lost by double digits!

2) There seemed to be a lot of standing around offensively which led to a lot of 1 on 1 play and led to a lot of contested 3’s

3) Our offense was basically the same as last year, forcing the ball in the post, which led to a lot of double and triple teams and I think that led to a lack of ball movement and some of our turnovers

Myles Rice being able to breakdown the defense and his athleticism is what won the game but that won’t happen too many times because teams will figure out how to play against him defensively

If I didn’t know that we beat a top 15 team on the road, reading this would cause me to think we lost by 50.

Cheer up man! Or don’t. But maybe do.

If we had won  by 20 you still would find reason to criticize.

I know you love IU but I sometimes think that your hatred of CMW blinds you to the fact that this team, these guys, might actually be good.

I hope you can enjoy the ride that this season might be. Otherwise, what’s the point?

Being objective and analytical and projecting that towards games that matter and the future of the program.

Woody’s offense is always going to feel stiff for those that enjoy ball movement/player movement.

Easy to defend except we have some superior talent to make plays.

I admire their grit in this game and I’m happy with the W, but as this poster said, good shooting teams are going to blow us out just like last year. We don’t defend them well and we don’t shoot them particularly well but this team is vastly more talented than last years team, so there is a reason for some optimism.

But it was just an exhibition game or that's what the sunshine pumpers were told

Just my assessment!  Yes, it was just an exhibition game but I anything changed besides the players, I sure didn’t see it.  But yes we won the game!

100% your honest opinion should be honestly shared!

Put it this way - it's been well over a year and a half since IU has beaten a ranked team at home or on the road; it was Feb 25th of Trayce's senior year when we won at Purdue. So nada the entirety of last year.

This team did that on the road on it's first try. Yes, in an exhibition, but with both teams' starters playing about 30 minutes and in a down to the wire game where we had to make plays and make shots down the stretch. That's objectively different.

Still an exhibition at the end of the day.   These games are for both teams to try different rotations out that they might not normally play in certain situations.  IU could have lost and at the end of the day it was only an exhibition.   Barnes said at the 9 min mark he had a lineup in that he normally wouldn’t play together it wanted to try it out and let them play meaningful reps against good competition.   Pretty sure IU made a run during that time

He can say that, but that still isn't half as detrimental as not having TG and Tucker.

Kanaan's Tech was BS and if he gets a tech for that, no shot ZZ souldn't have been T'ed up for throwing the ball at KC on that play. Crazy

We look so much better in transition.

You can see where Galloway fits. Tennessee can pressure two guys well... throw Galloway in there and then you gotta pressure three, I like our odds.

What we showed in transition is being kind of overlooked here. I think we won points in transition in this game (we were winning last time i checked), and that is a change from last season. So were our close outs. So were several lineup looks that got good runs. It was an exhibition but there were several ways in which this team, besides the players, looked different. Shouldn’t read too much into this game, but thst switch also shouldn’t be thrown so hard that differences are ignored

I REALLY like being down 6 w/16 mins to go, on the road, against a T25 team, without TG+Tucker and finding a way to win.

I agree, winning on the road against a rank team is a big deal.  IMO, the style of play wasn’t different but what makes this team different is the personnel.  They do have a much better roster and players.
