We had one in Ware who averaged one 3 a game. There two best three point shooters averaged 10 3s a game while ours averaged 2 3s. His shots will be more difficult with what we have compared to what he has had in the past. Perkins isn’t a high volume three point shooter at 2 per game. You can’t put five guys on the floor who can’t shoot the three. It’s a recipe for a disaster offensively. Our best three point shooters did not average taking two threes per game. Not sure how you coming up with. Even if you contorting that to say our best shooters were ware and Leal based on percentage, they come out close to three. Quote

It’s a huge reason why Iowa finished 4th and 15th in offensive efficiency per KenPom with Perkins as its starting PG. I guess if I take this assumption at face value I also have to also credit Perkins as a huge reason for Iowas 157th ranked Def efficiency. I have to say I don't find either assertion very credible. He’s a 8.5 BPM while the rest of the starters total BPM is 8.4 combined (Reneau: 4.4, Mgbako: 2.2, Gallo: 2.1, XJ: -0.3). To get “safely” back into the tournament you’ll need a start BPM total around 30-35. So without Kel’el, where is that hole getting filled? Let’s say you bump MM and MR to 15 combined (which is possible), you have to find another 15+ from the other 3 slots. Perkins is a 5 BPM. So he’s on target, but just barely. You might need one or two guys more in the 7 range like Nelson/Estrada from Bama. Either way, you’ll need to hit some home runs very soon. One thing to keep in mind is that BPM is a very…in exact science. Jordan Geronimo was a 4.7 BPM player his last year at IU. No one in their right mind would ever say he’s that good. Stuhoo 1 Quote

But I agree he's a good defender. To that end, he was fourth in OWS. So not nearly the reason they rank high in off efficiency by that metric. We've all seen him play. I think others have laid it out well. He's a nice player. He isn't going to come in and solve many of our issues on offense because he's not that type of pg. His steady ball handling will certainly help and be a welcome addition. For me, it's not that he's not a good player. The other poster put it best about us needing to hit home runs. We potentiality start returning guys with so many limitations--as currently deployed in Woodys scheme--that we need to land some really dynamic players as our final two starters. Perkins falls just short of that for me. All imo, of course. Quote

And then you can swing for the fences. 8bucks 1 Quote

So once Perkins is signed, you forgo the opportunity to sign a better PG. These guys are not going to come and compete for starting spots. We have one at pg. My point remains: Perkins is not a single... he is a semi-home run, but only if he is paired with appropriate roster construction. So I 100% agree that a starting backcourt of Perkins and Gallo has two excellent players who are not compatible with modern-era winning. But a backcourt of Perkins and, say, Conwell, with Galloway and Hickman as the sixth and seventh men would potentially be good stuff, especially if the offensive philosophy is re-evaluated. Speculating about this is fun, but I'm waiting until May 1st to have an informed opinion. GloryDays, 8bucks, Crimson and Cream and 2 others 4 1 Quote

Class of '66 Old Fart Posted April 1, 2024 Author Posted April 1, 2024 Leland Walker visit will not happen today and will be re-scheduled. Per Rabby, apparently the upcoming dead period does cover portal recruiting as well as traditional HS recruiting and IU didn't want to rush his visit. He also mentioned coaches typically leave on Tuesday to head for the coaches convention. Now the cynic in me says maybe there's somebody else we feel better about who will enter the portal today or tomorrow or it's someone we've already reached out to who is giving us a warm and fuzzy feeling. mamasa, WayneFleekHoosier and 8bucks 3 Quote

We (collectively, not you and I) did this dance last year where well after we landed Ware people were convinced we'd play 4 out or that reneau or Galloway would come of the bench. I personally don't see it with Woody but will be happy to be proven wrong. When I look at these transfer options I generally assume the existing structure won't change much until I see something different. Stuhoo, Adillac and pumpfake 3 Quote
