Transfer Portal w IU Interest

That would depend on how each person views the coach.   If you don’t want Woody as coach then the answer is the player put  the time in and improved in his own and if you do like Woody and staff then yeah it’s totally the staff for the reason they got better.   Like most things probably a little bit of both the player doing it on his own and the staff helping him improve.

I mean I know that Calbert took Reneau under his wing last summer and worked with him one on one. But I also don't want to give him all the credit for personal reasons :-).

Not really worried.  That’s 12 more guys targeted than last year.   Staff dropped the ball last year in the portal.  I’m guessing they are targeting more than 12 just might not be hearing about the others.    They seem to have approached this year different so maybe they have communicated with some in the top 12 that they are in a good spot.  Honestly even without the NIL money they would have to really drop the ball if they can’t get at least 4 kids to commit being a B1G school with available playing time. I would find it hard to believe they can’t get 5 talented kids even if it isn’t one of the 12  from the over 1300 kids in the portal.  NIL money should make the job that much easier.   If we get into May with 0 commits then I could see a reason to worry.

Uh...last year they couldn't find a shooter in the portal, so...

I have to disagree ... won't look up their names but ... one shooter went to UT ... one PF when to UT and then to St Johns before the season started. They "targeted" more than 0 last year, they only got Ware ... so that is at least one "targeted" portal player.

Maybe I am confused by your word "Targeted" ... seeing your post after this one ... "Prioritized" might be what you mean.

Of course they targeted more then 1 I was being over the top with that but they have definitely targeted more this year in the first 2 weeks of the portal then they did all of last year.   Most of their problem was they thought most their needs were already on the team.   Big swing and a miss last year

No but I've drank with Kevin before

I used to work with a Larry Wilson years ago.  His son was good friends of Calbert's and I thought his name was Chris.  I have lost track of him and was just wandering as I would love to catch up with him again.

Yeah because they didn’t prioritize it and they thought their shooters were already on the team so….

they were wrong.

If the coaching staff didn't prioritize any shooters in the portal last year, then they suffered from incompetence of monumental proportions. LOL

The BEST CASE post-mortem scenario of last year was that the coaches left a scholly open unintentionally because they missed out on shooters in the portal.

It would be massive malpractice to think that Woody didn't believe that he needed any more shooters going into last year...

Is anyone worried that were only targeting like 12 guys again this year and we need to land half of them to fill the 6 spots? If we fill all 6 which I'm told is unlikely.

Also, I wonder if it is an IU thing that we have all the players we're interested in making a visit before having them commit. Other programs are getting commitments right now without a kid ever visiting. But at IU we always set up a visit first. I don't need Conwell or Hickman to visit to know that I want them.

Just my Wednesday morning ponders

I would venture to say that there are players committing to places that had been recruiting them previously and they might have already visited there.  I'm not sure where you are getting the only targeting 12 guys TBH.  The net is much wider this year than last.

I agree that we aren't likely to fill all spots -- not sure that we should unless the last guys are coming in knowing they are end the bench guys.

It was malpractice that most posters called malpractice at the time.   Staff was confident in who they already had on the team.  Leaving an open scholly with the roster they had was definitely a choice.  Not bringing any other guard in unless they thought it was an absolute guarantee upgrade over Trey was definitely a choice….

it didn’t work out for them.   Maybe this year it will

This goes all the way back to Crean. None of these guys who transfer out become stars. Blame the staff for recruiting them but you can squeeze blood from a turnip. Banks and Gunn (along with numerous others over the years) just aren’t very good players at this level.
