What makes him special?  I see a less than 40% FG shooter and a 32% 3-point shooter and a less than 1.0 assist/turnover ratio.  Never seen him play so I need some help on this one.

Woody: "Look at all those stars next to his name, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5! He must be good, fork over those bills."

He was a freshman this year that has a high longterm upside.

Anyone heard anything about mgbaco?  Staying or going?

He has been posting IU centric stuff in his IG stories, could be nothing, but it seems like most of the time these guys go radio silent when plans are to leave. I know nothing, just happened to notice, and he didnt post much during the season as I recall.

My guess (nothing more) is he’ll put his name in draft to explore options but will come back if he doesn’t hear info that would encourage him to leave.  Think unless he hears he’s a first round pick (doubt he hears that), he’ll be back.

Gotta say, this feels an awful lot like the Crean off season besides the 6 million dollar roster opportunity.

Sparks, and our other backup B1G from south Florida, really another indictment on Woody and staff’s eye for talent, vision, and system.

It’s hard to find things Woody does well if I’m being honest.

I'm hoping it resembles the Crean year with Vonleh and Stan Robinson when were terrible because we had very little outside shooting, and then went and got Zeisloft and Bielfeldt from the portal-ish transfers.

That was a real solution and this year's portal gets could also cure a lot of roster holes.

I’m not sure that things are going to workout great in the portal for IU but it does sound like they’re gaining traction with Carlyle

This is, of course, the rankest wishcasting imaginable, but a backcourt of Kanaan Carlyle and a healthy Jakai Newton would be the most athletic backcourt in IUBB history and would look nothing like the typical B1G guard pair.

A dude can dream.

Are you saying it could be Baylor/Houston-like?!!?

Carlyle snubbed Baylor, Auburn, and many others because of the academic environment at Stanford. So we could get a next level athlete that is in Kelley? That sounds good.

“He’s unique because most players that are fearless competitors also struggle with an out of control ego or an apprehension towards criticism,” Harris wrote. “Kanaan isn’t like most. He wants to learn.”

Carlyle’s inquisitive and ambitious mindset does not just apply to basketball. He also plans to study business at Stanford and to become an entrepreneur after his basketball career ends.

“I’ll probably study business, hopefully I’ll go to the league so I gotta learn how to be able to take care of my own money,” Carlyle said in an interview with Pro Insight. “I want to build up my business one day after basketball.”

Yes, the text I received said to not believe that article. The person actually texted me due to that article coming out.  He had to say that because the season is not over and Conor knows that he would get 0 minutes if it was known he was leaning towards transferring.

For full transparency, here is the text I received from someone close to the kid/family. This person wants him to end up at IU.

That is interesting. I honestly hadn’t heard much about it from the people that I know who know him so I thought maybe he had changed his mind. As of this winter I don’t believe there has been much interest on IU’s part.

I had randomly thrown out ND before for him, but I can see Butler. Closer to home and I believe he has some really good friends at IU, so pretty close to there. It’s still the BE and Matta could get him shots.

I would worry about him at IU under Woody. He’s best when he’s getting shots through an offense and he honestly struggles pretty bad when he’s pressing and he’s trying to create his own shot (which Gards offense has devolved into at times). He reminds me a little of McNeely at Virginia. That guy is a 45-50% 3pt shooter when getting his shots in the rhythm of the offense and about a 25% when the offense struggles and he has to create for himself.

I don’t really think Woody’s IU would be a good fit for him, but I’m not surprised you are hearing he still probably transfers. As I posted earlier in this thread, UW has become a bad fit for him and appears to be that way next year too.

I really hate to see people expecting Jakai Newton to be explosive. He had one of the worst injuries a basketball player can have. I cannot think of a single player that’s had it, come back even close to athletic as they were prior to it. Best case is he retained some athleticism and developed a ton of skill and IQ.

Count me as one who thinks we get close to nothing from Jakai Newton in his time at IU. Which sucks bc I was really excited about him prior to his injury.

Got hurt in June of ‘23. Played the last 4 games of his high school year last year.
If we’re gonna doom cast, let’s at least be accurate.

Many have said he has barely played in two years. That's not accurate?

I'm not convinced Jakai Newton contributes anytime soon.

2 major knee injuries are pretty devastating for a guard.

He very well may need another season to get fully healthy.

Even if he's healthy, there's likely a lot of rust to knock off. I doubt he contributes much next season even if he is healthy because of that. Having barely played in 2 seasons takes time to come back to. And he still hasn't played at the college level.
