Transfer Portal w IU Interest

Low block rate, bad rebounding rate, poor positioning…likely due to strength. Teams in the A10 scored at the rim at will with Bailey in the game. He’s a perimeter-oriented player that just happens to be tall.

The enthusiasm and hope can't be reasoned with. That's what makes a great fan.

I use video and pertinent statistics over sample size to project. In Baileys case his background is a thing. Well coached to a specific system that has a track record for building this type of big. He's the third in a row. He pops at first on the offensive end. He can do some Danny Wolf type things. Then you get to the other end of the floor and he's Magnus Pelkowski. So why is that? Will he be different at IU? Some of it is frame. Some of it is avoiding foul trouble because the offense ran through him and he played 33mpg. Scouting reports are iffy on him. I think he's between Tyler Wahl and Noah Waterman. In a positionless line-up of Bailey, DeVries, Dorn, Miles, Wilkerson where you get up and down and and impose tempo you might blow people out. But there's the grind it out side of the coin where Bailey may be the biggest bust in the portal.

Tend to agree with this. In the event you add a legit rim protector, he becomes one of the better luxury adds in the portal. He presents matchup problems offensively for a bunch of teams, but you’ll run into much bigger problems if he’s your defensive anchor for the majority of the minutes.

what was WVU defense like last year? Did they play many "defensive anchors"?

I’d feel a lot better about Bailey if this roster had guys like Javon Small, Sencire Harris, and Toby Okani guarding out on the perimeter. We don’t have that unfortunately.

This. The DeVries style is said to be packline but when I watch he uses some concepts but sticks closer to the 3 point guys than a traditional pack. His teams are always pretty good guarding the three. They do let the opposing interior guys eat more. His defense has always been better than the personnel suggests. I hope that trend continues.

People need to stop listening to him. He has no direct connection from what I see. All second hand.

I think that some of the Woodson stuff is bleeding over for him.  Woodson is gone but the athletic department folks are still there.  I get the impression that they are locking out the rumor monger guys.

They also didn’t play Tucker at the 4 because he was injured. So I’m not sure we’ll look like them. Or maybe we don’t play Tucker at the 4? Who knows…

I see all this worry about our size on the frontline.  Villanova 2018 says hello.  They crushed everyone through the tournament with not one person over 6'9 I believe.

Great, so how do we get that line-up via the portal?

J/K, it's certainly possible to win with ..... let's say a 'less than elite' post defender, as your example shows. There are other examples too. Problem is you have to be elite at other positions and really have a system. Will this season 1 roster have that? Will it ever approach 2018 Nova levels? I sure hope so, but in the meantime, I'm gonna go with the more common approach of having a solid post defender that can hold his own and maybe even clean up a few short-comings of his team-mates.

They had pros all over that roster and their top 3 perimeters aren’t just pros, but very good pros.

We can play small, but that’s not a comparison I’d want IU fans to be thinking about.

The Villanova team that has 4 guards playing in the current NBA playoffs? Yeah that team could guard the hell out of you out on the perimeter. I’m not worried about height, I’m worried about guys who can guard.

I'm not sure if Rabby is locked out.  Spring '24 didn't help him, but he is technically professional and measured.  Some of these new assistants are probably decent sources too.

I can tell you two guys who are locked out for good, which is fan-freaking-tastic:

Jeez…I hope not. They’ve been putrid on D the last few years. Worse than Tom Crean and Woody defenses. We’ll have little shot at the tourney if we’re that bad on D.

Ideally, we’d look more like Wisconsin/BYU/Kentucky this past year. A top offense…. Don’t need to play a blistering pace to get it…and inside the top 50/60 on def efficiency. Purdue , Uconn, and Illinois were similar but played slower.

I get the personnel issues and comp to Iowa, but they're so dang bad on D I hate to even see that comparison.

This is where coaching comes in though. Regardless of personnel, DeVries was still able to put together a team that ranked 15th in KenPom DRtg last season.

It looks like he’s prioritizing recruiting offense, which is more Fran-like, but he can actually coach defense which we’ve not seen Fran succeed at.

“Are you guys gay?” Quote from RMK. Funniest thing Knight said in years. No coach…we are just clowns.

Jig was up 4-5 years ago though. When the Garland thing happened that was it for me. Then his weirdness on peegs. No more Rabby for me.

I agree with that. But that’s kind of why I pushed back on that comparison. Iowas issues were Fran moreso than personnel.

If I squint real hard I can talk myself into this roster being something like Gards put on the floor at Wisconsin. Not athletic enough to be really good defensively but sound. Somebody compared Bailey to Wahl and that’d be a solid outcome for us.
