Fire (or Force 'Contemplated Retirement') Coach Woodson Thread

After the kid from Oakland hit 10-20 3's and they beat pUKe it made we wonder about how the tournament teams fared during the season on 3-point shooting.  We didn't have a roster of solid 3-point shooters but we also didn't run an offense designed to get open looks for 3-point shooters, i.e, our archaic "inside out" offense.  I compiled the 3-point shooting statistics for the 64 tournament teams.  Couple of teams played 1 or 2 more games than others but I don't think the overall data would be markedly different had I made allowances for exact number of games played.

First table is teams sorted by % made.  Second table # of 3's made.  Third table # of 3's attempted.  For each table, our data appears at the top.

I am not a smart man, nor am I a "numbers guy." However, based on my rudimentary understanding of mathematics, it would appear we are Grambling State.

In all seriousness, this is a pretty amazing data set, and to see just how far we are from the UCONNs and Arizona's of the world. You are doing the Lord's work. Feels like you could juxtapose this over guard/wing commitments over the last three years of recruiting and find some trends...

If you go to a site like torvik you can get it as a percentage of a teams shots which is more pace neutral.

Must be nice to have an administration that wants to win and is supportive of its AD.

Can we print a massive amount of these screenshots and mail them to various pertinent administration employees repetitively over the course of many weeks? Months?

No they’re are not.

There are no sure things. And there never was. Bob Knight wasn’t.  Pitino wasn’t. Tubby wasn’t. Gillispie wasn’t. Cal was probably as close as it gets and now he’s down.

But they are typically pretty quick to recognize when it’s going south and pull the trigger. They also do a decent job getting quality candidates. That’s what most big time programs do and all you can ask for. They won’t go 25 years of mediocrity because it’s nearly impossible for any competent major program to do so. And they have proven themselves competent.

Maybe not as bad as us but I think the blue blood days are about over.

They are doing that to us all!

Tend to think IU can afford to lure him away if it wants later. Not a risk I would’ve taken, but I can see a certain advantage to letting him swing on someone else’s dime.

How about them beating the $hit out of us in the Bahamas in November?!

I keep seeing people say this about IU luring him away, but I don’t see it. Maybe it is too big of a risk now like people are saying, but I think he’s gonna crush it at UofL, where when things are rolling, they can print money. If he succeeds, I don’t think he’ll leave. Anyone banking on him walking to IU later just isn’t realistic.

We can’t pull him away if he is successful.  Louisville will pay money for a good coach.

That could happen, though UL’s AD has been open about budget issues and bball is just not as much of a money driver as fball. The B1G deal makes IU wayyyyy ahead of UL and other ACC schools in this regard.
