Fire Coach Woodson Thread

I’m old enough to have kids at IU, and have many friends that do, and were not alive much less young for Mike Woodson, IU basketball player. I don’t know him like that and huge numbers of fans are the same. I know Mike Woodson as sub .500 NBA coach and guy who called me not a true fan. I would venture a guess there are plenty in my demographic who could not care less about Woody the IU player. I certainly don’t. I care about the program, not Mike Woodson or what he did or did not accomplish as a player. To my eyes, it seems like the money people are seeing a guy they rooted for in the 70s and not the bad basketball coach. I can empathize with people who knew him that way. It would be difficult for me to see Oladipo or Zeller trash their legacies.

Same. I was alive during part of Woodson's playing days but too young to remember (born in '77).

I had never even heard of Woodson until a few years ago, before the Miller hire, when he was mentioned as a possible coaching candidate. He may have been a good player, but he wasn't good enough that he would get mentioned in all-time IU greats list discussions on message boards. I've been on IU message boards for almost 30 years now so I've seen plenty of those discussions and his name simply doesn't come up.

But that's what happens when you make all about yourself and less about the program.

Look for example at Mike Ditka.  He was a Chicago Bears legend.  Came in as head coach, turned the program around, won a super bowl, and then massively under performed from there.  As the players and league passed him by, he was borderline nuts. Eventually was fired.  Fans where critical of him during the lean years, but he's still a Chicago legend because he didn't make it all about himself.

Regardless of what Woody does from here, that does not diminish the fact that he was a great player at IU.

People are on here are saying he wasn't and that it's his fault we didn't win an NCAA title when he was playing. That's just absurd.

Yeah you're not going to find many players with a more decorated individual career than Mike Woodson. Someone claiming to have been born in 1977 and not knowing Mike Woodson's name until a few years ago is more than suspect. I was 9 years old when he graduated and still remember him well.

No wonder he doesn't like the 3pt shot.  He doesn't even have a stat line for it LOL

Didn't exist during his college years. His turnovers were pretty high though! :)

I'm the one you're referring to an I wasn't watching IU basketball as a baby. Sorry. I vaguely remember the '87 team and didn't really get into IU basketball until the early 90's, over 10 years after Woodson was gone.

Plus, he doesn't get brought up in IU all time lists that happen over and over on IU fan discussion boards, even by those who would have watched him play. I've seen plenty of names of players from the 50s an 60s but not him.

But enlighten me, what was the best IU game you watched as a 1 or 2 year old?

But that is what happens when you destroy your legacy.

I was born the same year George McGinnis played at IU, don't remember him playing...obviously. But I sure as hell had heard about him before a few years ago. Mike Woodson finished 2nd all-time in career scoring at the time he graduated and was recently bumped outside the top 5 this prior season by TJD. He was one of the best defenders in program history. Outside Cheaney and McGinnis, you could make a legitimate case he's the best player at IU to never win a title. And he was also one of the better Knight NBA players that Coach RMK produced.

I've heard plenty of McGinnis. HIs name is brought often when discussing IU greats. I cant help it that Woodson's name doesn't come up, I just know that it doesn't. Not by the people I talked to growing up nor on IU message boards, which I've been on for nearly 30 years. Don't know what else to tell you. /shrug

I'd love to see what message boards you discourse on that doesn't include Woodson as a top 15 or so Hoosier?

Nothing he did as a player has anything to do with Mike Woodson, bad basketball coach. I haven’t said anything about Mike Woodson as a player, because I never saw Mike Woodson play basketball. I have only watched Mike Woodson coach basketball, and Mike Woodson is not good at coaching college or NBA basketball. This is a really strange argument right now you guys are having lol. Fire Mike Woodson.
