Fire Coach Woodson Thread

I’m going to root for Pearl to be successful. He coached my alma mater and I’ve always enjoyed his teams. First time I rooted against him was vs IU.

Yeah. Been wondering if I should just choose a new team. Maybe Auburn can be that for the next 5 years

It's so frustrating that he is being given the chance to fix this through the transfer portal.

The fact that he needs to fix it through the portal is evidence in itself that he has no plan or system in place, and is simply winging it. That's what you do when you're completely at the mercy of whoever decides to enter the transfer portal.

If you attempted to build a roster through recruiting high school kids, you can cast a wider net and take the time to identify kids who fit into your system, and develop them to contribute to it.

He's just resorting to throwing other people's money at the problem to hide his inability to fulfill the duties of being a college coach.

I'm not sure he knows how to identify players and build the roster. He never had to, a GM always did that in the NBA.

Can you believe this was posted on Twitter this morning? Is this the first step in the transfer portal by the IU staff? IMO it's ridiculous.

Posting this the morning after a Selection Sunday where your name wasn't called is certainly a choice. Just asking to be memed to death by other fanbases.

How many portal players do you think Woodson can get to say "yes", I will come to IU?

How many of those portal players are B1G quality starting players?

Will he find a late signing high school recruit that is a 5-star player?

Based on his past portal performances I don't see him adding enough portal players that will make a real difference. I see it more of filling the roster spots. Of course this is all based on how many current players transfer or enter the portal and/or test the NBA waters and then come back.

No matter what, in my guessing state of mind, I think he needs three impact portal players for next year ... and I don't see that happening.

And already tried to gaslight the fan base so they have a built in excuse when he doesn't.

I wish Alford would have recognized the problem with how he handled the PP situation at Iowa and worked to make some amends publicly.  Admit he was blinded by loyalty to player and incorrectly assumed things he should not have blah blah blah.  I don't think he would be a high end coach here but I think he could be more steady that Crean with those same levels of peaks every so often.

Hoping for better though

He did after he faced some heat after getting the UCLA job. Idk, it was over 20 years ago. It was a far different culture back then. Heck, Kobe Bryant played an entire season with a pending rape charge back then. That’d never happen today. That’s not an excuse. He was wrong. He didn’t handle it properly. But there really isn’t anything in the 20+ years since to suggest he’d make the same mistake again.

However, he’s not really a good coach. Above average at best. If the IU administration was as hellbent on an IU guy as it seems they were, Alford was the only legitimate option, but I doubt he’d be killing it here.

It is doomed to fail.

Because no one is going to tell Mike Woodson how to run his program unless it's someone he trusts.

You have to remember Woodson thinks he's done a great job. He thinks he will fix this in the portal.

Well maybe Dusty could use Armond Hill as a ventriloquist doll?

Any idea who the third person is? I agree that only identifying or targeting 3 candidates seems like we are not casting a wide enough net. This seems to be a recurring issue IU has when targeting new head coaches.

Well, since they said "no" we can rule out Zeke and Wittman. :D (Only half joking - you never know with Buckner)

First thing's first, congrats to the IU women on the 4-seed and hosting opportunity. Tough draw, but they call it madness for a reason. Secondly, love you guys and this community, but goodness you're not shy about using the private message feature. Sorry for ghosting many of you but easier to just post publicly.

And, now that I've effectively buried the lead, Woodson is back next year with a couple caveats and interesting details:

- Meeting Tuesday happened as scheduled and talk was future of the basketball program and specifically how Woody fits in that plan

- Though Dolson and BoT disagree about it happening now, consensus was that this isn't the bridge hire they'd hoped for and this is his last year barring some miracle B1G championship or FF run next year that would make for bad optics.

- Woodson was given the opportunity to retire and go out amicably but said no and that he thinks he can use the portal to put us in a better position to transition to another coach after next year.

- Dolson laid out expectations for portal results and win/loss results next season that would result in letting Woody go; just my opinion but it sounds like Buckner, boosters, etc. got him the 4th year but Scotty Dolson has his finger on the eject button and Woodson knows it. Fully expect him to announce a "planned retirement" next year so he can go out on his "own terms"

- For what it's worth, Dolson did put out feelers and got positive feedback on interest from 2 of his top 3 potential replacement candidates; think we can get May with a text message, Pearl has serious interest but wouldn't make a move if his team makes a FF run or wins a natty.

- I think we as a fanbase/board are higher on Dusty than the administration/BoT; sounds like they're only interested in a homerun hire, win now guy if they do move and risking a third straight miss isn't something they're willing to do and just because he has IU ties and made a good tourney run, feeling is May isn't a guarantee at this level.

That's what I've got that I'm able to share comfortably right now. Not what myself or anybody on this board probably wants to hear. Moral is one more year is 95% likely (everyone root for UCONN in the S16, and a miracle!) It's kind of messy internally and they're trying to move on to get IU back to a top tier program while letting Woodson ride into the sunset having left the program in a good place and "stepping aside" for the good of the program. ??

Appreciate the info.  I’m assuming they’d give him some time to meet portal expectations, whatever those may be.  So, correct me if I’m wrong, but that 5% chance of a change, assuming Pearl would come, potentially would not happen until maybe May or June, similar to the Ohio State/Thad Matta situation??

Is it that much different now though?  Isn’t Terrence Shannon Jr playing an entire season with a pending  rape or SA charge currently? Or am I thinking of the wrong guy?

The university suspended him indefinitely. He had to go to court and get a preliminary injunction.

Jerry gave a great recap a couple of pages back. Was asked to retire of course said NO. Expectations were put in place for next year which won't be met.

Chris,

Happy to make this a sidebar chat, but I haven’t heard that, especially the first part of it.

I would love to pick your brain about what you have heard.

Is it best to fire your coach and then open it up to interested coaches to contact you?  Or, is it best to keep your current coach in place while you seek out your preferred candidate behind the scenes?

IU's history- Fired Knight and then hired the interim Davis.  Davis resigned and did a good search with two great finalists (Sampson and Beilein). Sampson fired and national search gave us Crean. Crean fired, but not much of a search as Archie was targeted early. Archie fired with the belief Stevens was interested, which led to settling on Woodson without any real search.  It sounds as if IU wants to have a replacement in place before moving on from Woodson.  I doubt that we would see Woodson retiring or being fired without an agreement with our candidate.
