Fire Coach Woodson Thread

The two most successful hires this century (maybe a little longer…forget when Self was hired) were blue bloods flexing their muscle and pulling proven guys in their prime from other P5 schools. Next is Cal to UK from a rolling Memphis program which is a similar type hire. You might throw Beard to Texas in there but I’d grade that as an incomplete.

UCLA has been about as bad as us with hires so I wouldn’t follow them. KU alternatively has had the magic touch.  I think K and Roy making their former players successors is also an “incomplete” at this point. Either way, we don’t have the luxury of a HoF coach grooming us a successor coach.

That leaves UConn. Ollie was kind of like their Mike Davis. Hurley looks to be a heckuva hire from the mid major scene though.

Given all that I’d love to pull a proven championship or multiple FF guy from another P5 program. Its seems to have a high chance of success. Absent that, pray like hell your AD can evaluate mid major resumes better than everyone else.

At the risk of repeating myself again, I'd be fine with Dolson's evaluation... as long as he can make it, live or die by it, and not have the interference of Buckner, the BoT or any of the Buckner/Thomas/Wittman/Kitchel cartel.

My issue is that it does not appear to be possible...

If you ask me, IU doesn't have the luxury of taking a chance again. We're slowly sinking into IU football land. You can't just keep firing coaches every 2-3 years and expect consistency. This isn't the Premier League. The last two hires were brutal. I'd like to see the admin change things up and get a P5 winner or risk becoming IU football. Pearl isn't the long term answer but he gives us one hell of a shot to get out of the cellar we're in - and quickly. Then the program will be in a much better spot. Dusty could flop quickly and then we're right back here in a couple years.

You're missing the point.  Hiring a coach that's currently at a winning P5 program rarely happens even for so called Blue Bloods.  Pearl's Auburn program is currently superior to IU.  He's not leaving for IU and we are just being used.  I'd love Oats, but the same thing goes for him.  Why would he leave Alabama to come to IU?  Our best shot might be Otzelberger from Iowa State.  He's developing a solid P5 program, but he's never won the Big 12.  Otzelberger did make a Sweet 16, but I've been told that could just be flash in the pan.  I'm not even sure that he would see IU as an upgrade over Iowa State.

At one time I had heard we did or were going to. But never heard anything else. The Pearl stuff has just overtaken everything. Everyone is so on Pearl, Dolson could line up Phil Jackson and people wouldn't know.

I do know that the super sub former player who owns a restaurant here in town has been pushing Drew to Dolson. He wants him because he's a "good Christian coach"

I remember reading the Rolling Stone (I think) about how Drew recruited from the chapel of his megachurch. My wife is a pastor, faith is a huge part of my life, but he’s sketch as hell

FWIW, I can tell you for a flat out fact that families of recruits and players read and post. Administrators and donors? I cannot say with certainty.

I think Yogi's mom used to post here.

FWIW, I live near Valparaiso University and there were always whispers about Homer (Scott and Bryce's dad) Drew's recruitment practices.  He always brought in a ton of foreign recruits....not sure how legit they were in terms of being college players.

Self-  Kansas > Illinois.

Williams-  North Carolina = Kansas (Williams was an alum, money had nothing to do with it)

Beard-  Texas > Texas Tech  (Beard was a Texas alumnus/dream job)

Kentucky > Memphis  (Memphis a mid-major)

IU < Auburn, IU < Alabama

He's got 3 top 25 recruits coming in next season so God must love him.

And fland is supposed to be one of the main three he went after the hardest. He sounds beyond lazy.

Yeah, a good college coach/recruiter would take the opportunity to point out a few things they observed and give advice on how to handle certain game situations or drills to work on to improve a weakness that was being exploited. That helps build trust and show genuine interest. They definitely don't just watch a bad game from a highly rated recruit the staff has prioritized and say "nah I'm good actually. He's not close enough to being a pro yet"

Super common in the south (before NIL) to have the churches involved. Some of the nice folks in South Carolina made sure Dabo had a gold-plated collection plate the size of Monroe Lake.
