Fire Coach Woodson Thread

Recommended Posts

We did get behind USC by 10 early at home
Just saying he still hasnt beaten a big ten team with a winning record nut it doesn't get really hard til after Maryland. Northwestern isn't that great either. He could be 7-3 at that point and no way they fire him then.

This part always cracks me up. We’re not even to Sunday or Monday yet and no one said anything was a done deal, just that there is a plan in place for an interim coach. So we start tearing people down because it’s not working out exactly how people want it to. Fun times.

Patience is key....until they screw it up lol

Nothing floating out there that moves you away from the plan in place though, right? You haven't heard that the hard fought, escape by the seat of our pants after leading by 10 in the final stretch, 1 point OT victory over a really bad team.....didn't change Scott's mind....to YOUR knowledge?

You saw it last night in the game, but an added dynamic to this is there are players who still clearly like playing for Woody and all this noise does nothing but motivate them to play harder and want to prove all the haters wrong.  Us against them mentality can really work for a short period.

Yep, we just saw it last season. IU was 6-10 and staring down one of our worst seasons in modern history. And the team, with nothing really to play for, reeled off 4 straight wins (plus one more in BTT), culminating in Woodson and Leal's triumphant remarks on Senior Night.

Now they're running it back!

I think he should be talked into coming out and announce he is retiring at the end of the year. Let him coach out the year like Davis did when he announced he wasn't coming back the next season. Like I said the fans know the real story but nationally and even potential candidates would likely look at firing a coach with this record as a bad look.
He sure didn't sound like a guy last night who has any intention of doing that . He says they are playing good bbal. That’s how delusional he is.

Going from watching our game last night to watching UK and Alabama you just can tell the difference in quality of play. Our game isn't even in the same area code as these teams

Absolutely. These teams actually try. Our team takes on the mold of our coach. Lazy. We’ll see where this season takes us but I don’t see a “light switch” turning on and all of a sudden we start playing hard

IU is going to allow the narrative that Indiana fans are awful to grow if they allow Woodson to coach anymore games at Assembly Hall

OK, and what will the narrative be if we fire a coach mid-season who is above .500 in conference?

Narrative inception

What will the narrative be if a coach who gets his @$$ kicked on national television regularly were to retire mid-season for health and/or family reasons?

Fans booing at home is toxic. It will kill recruiting. It will turn off coaches. You can’t allow that environment for an entire conference season IMO. But he could still definitely end up doing well enough to finish the year IMO.

Not really concerned about that. We've been a bad basketball school for 25-30 years... optics are not what we, as a fan base (and them as the administration) should be concerned with. Optics have continued to drive us downward for the past 25-30 years...

At least the hard part of our schedule is staring down at us. Last year’s end of schedule was against the bottom half of the B1G if I remember correctly. If we start reeling games off now, I’ll be pretty happy about it. This year if we win at the back part of our schedule, it’s against good teams and our team will be playing great.  I don’t have much faith in Woodson reeling off games this year.  Hence Fire Mike Woodson.

Students have short memories. Beat northwestern and I doubt they boo next weekend unless Maryland goes up 15. Even though he barely squeaked out a win imo he needed like a four game losing streak to be cut loose mid season. That win saved him.

Yeah we will see. I don’t think beating NW is a given at all. May not be by Maryland… might need to get embarrassed by Michigan/Purdue before it can be justified internally.

Sadly, this seems to be a key part of the AD administration’s playbook! Strategically dump on fans in season who get extremely frustrated at poor coaching, effort and results as a root cause of the issues…then gaslight with burners turned high during the off season in order to set up false expectations for the coming year in order to cover for their internal administrative ineptitude. Rinse, repeat…the cycle continues.

Retire tomorrow after a "great" road win, for health reasons. If the interim turns it around and wins out, he'll take credit for getting them over the hump/OSU. If they continue losing, he was just getting them over the hump/OSU. Win-Win.

I'm in the camp of him not coaching in Bloomington again. His friends and family should not allow him to let his legacy be destroyed.

That we have higher aspirations than simply being above .500 in conference and that multiple 25+ point losses aren't acceptable here.

Look I was ready to move on last offseason.

My point is, if that poster is concerned about an "IU fans are over the top" narrative, a midseason firing of a coach at 5-3 in the Big Ten won't help that.

I don't know how if Woodson is 15-5 (6-3) you can justify firing him mid season. I wanted him fired last season and every day since I determined that I wanted him fired. However, I can recognize the bad optics of firing a coach with that record mid season regardless of who the wins are against. He will either retire mid season for "health" reasons or he'll be let go/retire at season's end.

This might answer that. Lol. 3 of the top 10 losses ever by a head coach at Indiana in a matter of a month.

This is what I’ve been telling my husband. If he were coach in this situation I would be strongly urging him to announce his retirement effective immediately. Why go through that again. Because if the next home game goes bad, it could get uglier than it was at the Illinois game.
