Fire Coach Woodson Thread

Recommended Posts

When I said "actively" recruiting I meant getting off his @$$ and visiting/watching high school players, meeting with them off campus, going to their games, etc. You know, stuff successful coaches do.

Good to know that Woodson put in whatever work was necessary to get this kid to come to last night's game. I'm ecstatic at the possibility of doubling the size of our current recruiting class.
To be fair didn't Woodson go at least one Indiana hs gym in 4 years. Didn't dolson make him go watch mullins? I think he brought his wife with. Must of had a wine tasting after.

So Woodson did host a recruit for an official visit last night? Just wanted clarification as that seems to go against the "not actively recruiting anyone" narrative. I believe that high profile recruit is in Madison this weekend along with Creighton and Virginia after.

A, as in a single, recruit.  That's The King doing his job.  LOL

How many times has bigfoot done a two for one since he has been at IU?  Hummel claims the former nba coach does it all the time.  I have rarely seen this the last few years.

I posted the same thing in the game thread today.

Can you imagine how the old timers felt winning the title in ‘87 with guys like Dean Garrett and Keith Smart? Smart even got the last shot! Disgusting…and personally I don’t really count ‘87 as a true title.

I’m being facetious (obviously).  I kind of feel like you do, but then I remind my self it’s simply entertainment. My bigger problem with this team is that they aren’t very good and thus not very entertaining! I have a feeling if we were undefeated and ranked number 1 we’d all feel a stronger connection to Rice, Goode, etc…

Garrett and Smart are the reasons we won back then. Those two had awesome year. Nobody could stop Smart in the open court. Garrett was perfect complaint to Thomas. Fun times.

I know. I was little at the time. But reading everything back through it seemed that Knight taking in jucos was a break in tradition. Mercenaries!  Point being…times change, and you have to adapt.

It was, but I wouldn't call them "mercenaries."  Just two dudes who developed at Juco and led us to No. 5.

Are we sure Woodson even wants to coach anymore?

I don't know. My guess is he came into this job thinking he would be naturally be awesome and it would be pretty easy.  He had NIL/portal to help with recruiting, and he is from the sophisticated NBA and this is Podunk CBB  As we've seen that hasn't panned out in terms of recruiting or on-court results.

Even with the poor results, I would guess he still wants to coach.  While media and fans may call him out mostly online, he is probably pretty insulated from that and he gets treated well in person.  He doesn't work very hard on recruiting or game prep and he gets $4M/yr and he can hangout at the Fellas Lounge, host golf tournaments, hold court at nice restaurants, etc.

If he had to work as hard as most top CBB coaches, he probably wouldn't like this job very much.  But he does the job his way and that works for him.  Hopefully it stops working for IU soon.

I keep thinking back to when he was hired and was asked about his approach to recruiting, he said "You want to play basketball for Mike Woodson, you come and talk to Mike Woodson." He really thought players would come to him. I don't think that happened like he thought it would, and it's definitely not happening now that recruits have seen his archaic schemes and lack of energy.

You have to eat, sleep and breathe this stuff to succeed at this level. I've never gotten the impression he was that committed to doing it. I think he likes the job title, being on the sidelines during games and getting to walk around and be acknowledged as Mike Woodson, Indiana University basketball coach, but he dislikes a lot of the other stuff. Not a whole lot different from Archie Miller in that regard.

Spot on.  Someone posted somewhere that he recruits like he is K or Self, but he quite obviously is not, and it doesn't work.  That plus not loving recruiting, game prep, etc., means we have quite the bad combo with our coach.

Woodson didn’t even want to coach when IU hired him in terms of love and passion and drive and ability.

Sure he wanted to be in a status position joining the club taking all that was is given to him that goes with such a job.  Great player but not a coach nor a leader nor a competent representative for a major college basketball program like IU.

We have 8 guys who play at least 15 mpg: Ballo, Reneau, Mgbako, Rice, Galloway, Goode, Tucker, and Carylyle. Really only Galloway and Goode fit that bill, and Goode has only been on the team for a few months. Leal plays some too  I don’t want to sidetrack the conversation, but I’m just not a fan.

Maybe it’s because I’m older now, maybe it’s because I don’t live in Indiana anymore, maybe it’s due to the transfer portal. I don’t know. But I really just don’t feel any connection. It used to feel like these are guys playing for my school. Now it just largely feels like a random group of dudes wearing IU jerseys. 7 of the 13 scholarship players this year are new, and 6 of them are transfers. Before we’d follow these guys in high school recruiting for a year or two before they’d get to campus. Now IU doesn’t really do high school recruiting and then we find out in April who will be on the team the following year. It’s not just an IU problem, but I don’t like it.

I feel the same IU basketball just doesn’t mean as much to me anymore. But winning cures a lot of things. Just look at the football program.
