Fire Coach Woodson Thread

Recommended Posts

I always knew Mike Woodson wasn't any kind of long term solution. But I didn't think I would hit this point into year 3. But in the words of the Big Lebowski " The god **** plane has crashed into the mountain".

My wife bought me tickets to the IU vs Penn State game for my 40 birthday. After that game I was completely done. I'm just so sick of the past 20 plus years of an administration that can't get this right.

No other program that is considered blue blood would ever allow this. But that's point we no longer are. I barely  remember when were.

I have no Ill will toward Mike. But we need him to move on. And have an administration that actually cares and knows what they are doing.

I knew from day one when even the national media laughed at the hire. Normally like with archie they call hires home runs. Most baffling hire we ever made and that is saying something.

If the media laughed at Woody and called Archie a home run, I think you can safely discount anything the media says. I wouldn’t take my cues from them.

At worst Woody is going to be 2/3 in tourney appearances where Archie went 0/3 with one incomplete on his report card.

Counter argument..

Woody had TJD as a junior and senior while Archie had him as a freshman and sophomore.

Year 3 of Woody has been worse than any season in the past 20+ years if you remove year 1 and 2 of Crean's tenure.

Plus, Archie would have 100% been in the tournament in 2020 if covid hadn't caused its cancellation. We would have been a low seed, maybe a 10, but we were in the play in game during Woodson's first year.

The argument that Woodson got us to where Archie couldn't is disingenuous.

I remember hearing from someone that Archie’s defense would take 4 years to implement… I think Archie was pretty bad. In fact I’m not sure he’ll ever coach a team in the top 25 of KenPom

Well that is true it will be interesting to see how many tourneys Woodson can make without his all american. I am guessing not many.

I watched the Bob Knight Interview, with Joe Buck, again. Really enjoyed that interview.

He was asked what the most important part of coaching was. His response was

“I think that the most important thing in coaching, is the will to win. It’s absolutely the most important thing there is. And if winning is that important to you, then you’re going to figure out how to win. There are a lot of coaches that are happy to have a good salary but I would have played for nothing.”

Such a simple quote. But I think it’s what we’ve been missing. Wanting to win and a strong will to win, I think, are different things. Most people at the top of their profession have that will to win and it manifests itself the most when they lose, imho. Locking themselves into a room and working tirelessly to figure it out bc losing is literally driving them insane.

I do like Mike Woodson the player and the man. I don’t doubt he WANTS to win here but I don’t see the most important trait that Coach Knight highlighted. This is my biggest frustration. We are starving for results and it hurts to see the leader of the program not giving it everything he has to “figure out how to win”.

Eureka!  You hit the hammer on the nail!  I think Woodson does want to win but his actions on and off the court tells us he doesn’t have that will to win.  It could be his age or it could be his laid back demeanor, but he’s not a fiery coach.  I think there have been several times that we’ve gotten hosed on a call and I just see him casually talking to the ref with his arms crossed.  I think that is more of an example but I think I stated ok, he doesn’t have that drive/passion to win

I think maybe Woodson didn't realize just how much different college is from NBA regarding time commitment. With recruiting etc there's not much of an offseason in college.

Interesting.. didn't Woodson beat Purdue with TJD playing 11 mins and scoring 4 points when Purdue was ranked Top 5 in the country?

That took some serious mental gymnastics to come up with that.

100% correct you have to live and die this job and not worry about your next tee time with quinn.

He probably wants to win, doing 75% of what is required of a college head coach. You got to pour everything you have into it almost the whole year. There are no summers off

I’m not defending him, per se. I’ve seen enough that I’d be comfortable moving on.

With that said, to the average fan or media member they’re going to see IU dumping a more successful, famous alum a year earlier than the disaster that was Archie. It’s just my own guess based on nothing, but I think he gets another year, at a minimum, so long as he wants it or will fight for it.

It is what it is.

Unless:

1) The rest of this season completely drops off of a cliff, or

2) Woody decides he's had enough.

Depends how much golf he is willing to give up this spring and summer. He will need to be recruiting very hard
