I hear you but the other teams that they will be competing with near the cut line have or will look just as bad on the floor.  Got to field 68 teams.   Some teams that are projected into the field right now have had moments where the product on the floor was hard to watch.    Even if there isn’t 36 deserving at-large teams you got to fill 36 teams

I do not appreciate you giving me hope with all of this level-headed logic. Please let me wallow :-)

Nice post. X brought this on himself and them cheering Cupps was a jab at X.

I would go with Trey at point guard, try Gunn at shooting guard and Cupps the 1st guard off the bench.  X can sit right down on the end of the bench next to Newton and the walk-ons.  Who knows, by inserting Gunn into the starting lineup it might jump start his confidence.  I think a lot of fans, including myself, have seen enough and have grown tired of the X show.  The guy brings too much drama on and off the floor!

Wish I could like this one 1,000 times.

I should clarify that when I say it’s hard for me to see a path, i mean on the floor not on the schedule. Sure, looking at the schedule we have a clear path. When I watch what happens on the floor….eh, the path is quite obstructed.

Maybe that’s why Xavier Johnson turns the ball over so much, he can’t see a clear path either!

Regardless of how you feel about X (his play, his attitude... I am not his biggest fan necessarily/don't love everything about the guy either)... the bottom line is very simple.

For this team to make the tournament, we need Xavier Johnson to play a key role. What that role looks like we all certainly have different ideas, but we can't afford for him not to play a significant amount of minutes with our current backcourt options.

Root for him. Root for the team. Or don't, if you like being miserable I guess lol. Some really do enjoy having something to complain about more than a team to support.

I root for the team.  The best person running the point on this team is Gallo.  The team is so much better with the ball in his hands making plays for himself and others.  He plays at such a good pace.  If X wants a role he needs to earn it but it’s not as our starting point guard.  Gallo is simply better, and as the starting point guard makes the team I root for better.

PG Gallo

F Mgbako

F Reneau

F Ware

G?????? (Cupps, Gunn, #Free Leal)

I’m exactly where you are.  Gallo makes this engine go.  I would give Gunn a shot at starting shooting guard, it may boost his confidence.  I would play Leal and Cupps before X, until X shows everyone he is willing to battle for a roll in this team and accept that roll.  That roll is not starting at point guard, as far as I am concerned, Gallo is our point guard.  I think Galloway plays better in that roll as opposed to shooting guard.

Also, Home Jersey is wrong, we do not need X to make the tournament, this team can be good without him.  But X needs to be part of this team to save face and his character

I think Illinois has them now.

Illinois is 2x as expensive and you can purchase much less. Ohio is not going to be recreational ready until later ‘24 (government stonewalling this)

I live 7 miles from Ohio and my in-laws are from there...they don't even know for sure what is going on.

I personally agree with Gallo as the PG. I like XJ better off ball and ideally I'd like to see him come off the bench until he starts playing better. i would like to see Gunn get some run with the starting unit to try and help his confidence, but unlikely to happen. We have no backcourt depth, we need XJ to play some quality minutes.

The guy launches a shot whenever he can. His confidence doesn’t seem to be an issue. His inconsistent shot making ability and defense are. Woody specifically called him and Mbako out for poor defensive possessions at the end of the Rutgers game. Combine that with Woody’s pretty rigid substitution philosophy and it’s tough to see him starting beside Gallo and Mbako.

Personally I’m not the biggest X fan, but I’m not as down on him as the general fan base. He’ll have games where he’s our best perimeter defender, our best creator, and best outside shooter. I don’t think you can say that about anyone else on the roster.

His MO coming out of pitt was basically what he is. I think him not playing last year made some people forget what he’s like. On a team desperate for guard depth he’s going to play quite a bit.

I’ll just remind all you “get one from the portal” warriors — X is from the portal.  :)

Lots of good players are. X has started 44 games for us in his career. He’s hardly an indictment of the transfer portal.

With regards to your last paragraph, I have doubts that’s who he is anymore.

I’m surprised we are in agreement.  Crazy times.

Not indicting the transfer portal.  Just pointing out it’s not that easy.
