Good for CJ Gunn.  He's been dogged a lot, and looked like a legit player tonight.  Now let's see if he can stack a few games like this.

Agree 100%.

Tonight I would say MR was the best player but Gunn was the MVP (for making a number of relatively unexpected plays off the bench in crunch time). Gunn is exactly what we need to fill one of our biggest holes but, to your point,  it is only meaningful long term if he can stack games like this.  If so, our ceiling rises a bit.

CJ Gunn is a fantastic on-ball defender.

Discuss? (nah—it’s a fact, Jack)

Depends on the day I’d say and the matchup. He’s much better defensively when he gets the positive offensive moment.

Nah…he gets beat on the first step too much and is not that fast laterally. He got taken to the hole at the end of the game pretty easily but he recovered nicely and the osu player missed the layup.

He’s long and can get those hands active sometimes which helps. But overall he’s way too inconsistent to be considered a good defender on the ball, off the ball, or otherwise.

He had a nice night tonight and can contribute if he’s going to regularly make shots and get in good position defensively.

Free throw disparity- strongly in our favor, is pretty clear, and just from the box, X’s 8-11 from the line is very clear

I’m a big Cupps fan, am not putting him down, and think he will be a great 4 year player for IU. But……

There is no question that X is “uneven” but lets face it. X went 8-11 from the FT line but if he was still injured Cupps probably would have gone 0-0 from the line. As a freshman Cupps is mature for his age bringing up the ball, not making mistakes etc but we need a PG that can influence the offensive side of the court. X can do that (and he can also frustrate us).

We’re absolutely better with X. He’s a seasoned vet, and sure the frustrating stuff is there, but he always comes back big.
