We lost in the sweet sixteen. That was our best team in the past thirty years and we got as far as the sweet sixteen. Not good for a program with endless resources and shockingly still hungry fan base.

We won the B1G (more than once) including beating that UM team at UM.
We lost in the SW16 that time (and again more than once) bc CTC couldn’t deal with Zone and Hulls was trying to play with a bad shoulder.
Here’s where I am - it’s just silly to live in some revisionist history saying things like we haven’t had a great team in 25 years. Get a grip on reality. We’ve had several (whatever your definition of great is, it doesn’t require you make a FF, it’s March Madness, that doesn’t measure your team).

We haven’t had a great coach since Sampson. That’s actually accurate and it’s why we haven’t hit the level of post season success we want.
I am on the fence whether Woodson can get us back, I don’t like the 3 point failures on both sides of the ball, but there’s a lot I do like.

It’s a numbers game and that requires consistency.  During the Knight Heyday, year in and year out the team performed.  They pretty much competed for a big ten title most years.  Pretty much made the tournament. Some years they got bounced quick — it happens. Others they made pretty good runs. A few time the made it to Championship.  Since then, it’s been feast or famine.  A few good teams under Davis, Sampson and Crean surrounded by a lot of meh.  Before Woodson can compete for Championships he has to build consistency.  First thing is to finish top 3-4 in the Big 10.  Make the tournament each year.  Then work from there.

It’s clear we still have some roster holes.  We are still cycling thru some Archie recruits — part of the problem hiring an NBA coach who doesn’t come in with the recruiting connections.  But the guys he’s brought in have generally worked out — X, Kopp, Ranue, JHS, Ware, Cupps.  I think Bates is the only one who really didn’t work out. We’ll get there.

Why do we have glaring roster holes in year 3?

There are two Archie players left on the roster, and one of them had 28 points today. Archie is no longer an excuse in year 3. Woodson turns 66 years old in March. He’s not a spring chicken. The bottom line is the team isn’t where it needs to be in year 3. The roster has glaring holes that still haven’t been addressed. Despite the glaring holes, he chose to leave a scholarship open. 2024 recruiting doesn’t look great either. Once again we’re going to be in a position where Woodson has to hit a home run in the portal to field an an above average team next year.

My issue is he filled some front court holes but not guards. It's year three and not a crean type rebuild..

2002 was when I first started watching IU I was ten and on spring break in Florida watching the tournament.

I watched all my life because of my family. But my earliest memories of actually watching games is the 2002 run. I was 8 at the time. Was absolutely wild driving through town in the back of the truck honking(we live an hour south of BTown but people knew).

Because there isn’t a roster fairy that comes and drops players under your pillow at night.  Sure there is the portal these days, but there still is a lot of competition for the best players.  Players make decisions based on a lot of reasons.  As many here have indicated, IU has been a down program for decades.  It’s not automatic that we’ll get someone.  And not every player is going to work out.  You can dream all you want, but that’s just the way it is.

Nope sorry that’s a cop out.  That’s a reason to not get the quality of players we would like. But everybody on this board thought we could use another guard in the off-season and we didn’t get one.  And we had fewer holes last year so seems strange

It’s reality.  You all keep saying we should have gotten another guard. My question is who?  Let’s not forget our best guard is in the NBA.

It's year 3, and we've had some of the same problems since day 1. There's been time to fix some of them, they could've gotten some players that were more athletic or better shooters in that time.  Again, it's year 3 with the same flaws not year 1.

The defense that was a strength in year 1 has gotten worse each year too; the defense wasn't good with Johnson (who is very hot or cold) in the lineup. I suppose that's the zebras fault though.

I consider Gunn and Banks part of the Archie crew.  So you’re looking at 4 scholarships.

One recruit, Banks, transferred out.  One went to the NBA.  One is hurt.  What do you want Woodson to do?  Another middle school Bob.

I’ll ask again who?

Who?  Name names.  No more of this we could have gotten some unnamed mysterious all American.

No team with Trayce Jackson Davis can be called a complete dumpster fire

Sorry but TJD was just a meh player under Archie.  He was all but gone until Woodson basically told him he had no shot in the NBA.  Woodson made him the player he is today.  When Archie was fired, recruiting was meh, the programs future was a mess.  It was nothing close to something like Coach K stepping away from Duke - a solid foundation under the program

That’s Rich.  All you keyboard coaches and ADs — complain like Karens but have no actual answers.

Solution:  Fire Woody after the season and hire Dusty May.  Woody is 66 and will not be here long no matter what.   Dusty could coach another 20+ years and looks very promising.   See what he can do here.  It can't possibly get any worse and he could very well be the next big thing.  We know what we have with Woody and it's not the answer.
