He may be "re-assigned" as a referee, but it will solely be because of his basketball performance, not because he was fired as an at-will police chief after a report he contested regarding diversity hiring applicability.

TV Teddy got the boot because 1) They wanted him gone and 2) They were able to cite on-court issues.

So Larry is getting the microscope? He should be walking on eggshells while refereeing IMO.

It does go beyond that.  Back in 2014, he worked 74 games….22 of those were flagged as “buddy days” — days where a different policeman worked a shift he was assigned to work.  While Scirotto claims the proper paper work and duties were fulfilled, there is no record of him covering shifts to make up those days.  Considering what he would be paid to ref is much greater than one shift would be, this lends itself to a pretty bad look, especially when those days are not to be used to allow a policeman to work another job.

Edit:  the 22 day number I found in a separate article and could post if you would like.

I’d add that the allegations bring up the question of his integrity. Officials needn’t be choirboys but in theory it should make an employer pause before continuing a relationship

No, not Kopp.  The snowflakes who are "offended" by the student section chant.  Fans going to be fans.  Rowyder the better.  :)

More than anything I think the post here about it was making fun of NW trying to simultaneously pump up their 'best student section in the world' (spoiler alert....they can't fill their arena without half the crowd being from the road team) while also 'apologizing' for their actions.

If they didn't want the chant from their crowd, it would have been pretty easy to stop.  That's fine if they didn't want to stop it -- in the end, I don't care and I've heard IU fans chant things as bad and worse -- but no reason to be apologetic after the fact on something you can control.  The only thing that seemed strange to me is that those chants weren't around last year when Kopp came back.

I don't think it was a coincidence that the mic'ed up game was one of the best officiated BIG games I've watched. Doing this for the lead official for every game would make the games more entertaining and encourage the refs to be on their best behavior, IMO. IF, the BIG actually wanted to improve officiating this would be a huge step in that direction and be fairly easy to implement.

That's my opinion as well.  The firing issue from the police department isn't what I'm discussing.  But he's had these questions of how exactly he is working a full time police job while simultaneously reffing games all over the midwest and elsewhere while not living anyone near dogging him for years and years now......I can't answer how anyone could ref 70+ games in a four and half month period nowhere near your home while working a full time job.

I mean, one way for the Big Ten to fix their officiating problem is to hire a dedicated set of officials.   With the amount of revenue the league generates, it's an easy solution.  Instead they seem to be trying to put band aids on broken arms.

I also believe that the half time 'ref conference' reviewing game film from the first half was all for show.  I don't have a problem with refs not doing so between halves -- not sure exactly what they are going to learn from a crammed session other than putting an idea in their head that they need to 'even up' their missed calls -- but I'm also not convinced that wasn't staged.

I agree on all counts on the ref conference. I'd forgotten about that part of it.

My counterpoint is that I would like to take my small children to a game without them learning that word.

Fair enough but they probably have already heard it.  I didn’t take my kid to cubs vs Sox, cubs vs cardinals or bears vs packers for the same reason.

Lander obviously is the best example. Bates should be more than a role player who occasionally plays well at home at this point. He’s somewhat limited ever when playing well. Makes you wander what the 5 star ranking was based on.

I think Gunn should get some (not all or most) of Bates minutes. We desperately need a guy that can knock down open shots. Kopp and Bates are incredibly inconsistent on a game to game basis. Bates is one of the most Jekyll and Hyde players I can remember. Gunn has the upside and more importantly, imho, the right “killer” mentality. Should be getting the young guys experience in these games, so that they aren’t a deer in headlights by the time they are thrust into the larger roles. Jay Wright said this when he was on the broadcast for our game.

When has Gunn shown he’s capable of consistently hitting open shots?

I did a little OSINT and figured out why we're having issues with Scirotto. He was fired as Police Chief because of discriminatory hiring and promotion practices. TJD's dad (or stepdad) was a police chief in Indy or Colorado or somewhere. Obviously, Scirotto's bias towards TJD led to him turning the ball over and giving a T to boiler Rick who happened to be sitting on IU's bench last night. You're welcome

It's a shame, because you really shouldn't have to worry about bringing your kids to games.  I did take my son to Northwestern to see IU play a couple of times -- first time was back when Eric Gordon was a freshman.  It was an enjoyable experience.  Unfortunately, it seems that some fan assholery comes when a team starts to win more.
