If Tamar Bates was a three star recruit we wouldn’t be having these “what is wrong with him” discussions. We’d probably be saying “give CJ Gunn a try in more extended minutes.”

I don't want to think ahead, but dang, we won't have much in the tank next year.  I understand that we need to win in the conference, but you have to give Banks and Gunn some minutes.  Maybe 3-4 minutes.  They need to feel the pressure in real-time and know how to adjust.  With TJD (likely), Race, JHS (more than likely), X, Kopp all gone next season, where is our talent coming from?

Duncomb? (if he stays).

Bates and Geronimo have shown very little to put faith in.

Trey will be our most stable starter.

I hope our two Freshman exceed expectations or we do a massive portal dive.

I'd be saying give Banks a try.  If Gunn was shooting 30 clips better and offering other impacts on the game maybe.   Here's the thing right now.  We know Bates can hit the open 3.  We know he has bad decision making.  Gunn offers a certain level of defensive activity and a willingness to shoot from anywhere at any time but hasn't hit any.  Banks seems to provide the most fruitful minutes of the 3 so far except when Bates gets hot from 3.  Banks fits into the offense.  Rebounds.  Cuts.  Finds ways to impact the game.

So to me, I can see the want to play Bates because you feel good with him shooting open 3s but EVERYTHING else RN is bad.

Gunn, You know he's gonna Gunn.  That could be great for this team if he could show efficiency but some of his takes are interesting to say the least.

Banks-to me I feel he has the most to offer overall.

It is what it is. I haven't watched a Big 1.o game this season and thought it was well officiated.

Did you watch the first half and say dang IU had a great game plan and played with effort and focus?

The officiating wasn't good, although we did get a few makeup calls that nobody seems to mention.

I thought we turned the ball over way too much. I think Northwestern had a great game plan to double TJD on his left hand, the arm he likes to pass with. I had no problem with their effort, some of the turnovers could be caused by a lack of focus. Also, a turnover could be because I got shoved down and lost the ball. I get the turnover in the stats but in reality, if the foul was called, I would have never had the turnover. There weren't enough make-up calls that were worth mentioning.

Woody has no choice but to do a massive portal dive. Why IU needs to make some kind of run with this group. (BTT, make second weekend of NCAAT, etc).

I agree with everything you said once X returns (which I would expect is very, very soon). Until then we need a third guard, not a Kopp backup. Gunn is much more of an on-ball defender and ball handler than Banks I would expect.

I agree on the portal.  We are going to hurt on the front court.  We do need to make a run, but I would at the very least like to see Banks get a couple.

Bates had been making some really nice passes for a stretch.

I think many people are getting wrapped around the turnover where Hummel mentioned lots of contact. We turned it over 13 times. I can recall 4 (TJD dribbling off his leg, TJD tossing it over Kopp's head, JHS trying to takeout the shot clock, Gallo's bad pass to Race) where we might have had pressure but there wasn't a foul. Which is easier to control - a little discipline that would cut down on the majority of your turnovers or forcing the officials to call a foul that forced a few of the turnovers? That's ballgame.

TJD, for some reason, decided he was going to bring the ball down in the paint. I believe that accounted for several of his TOs and missed shots in the first half.

I would hope and think we HAVE a LOT to offer in the transfer portal.   That's why i've been saying, we will find out NIL/program attractiveness really soon.

Enjoying this season no doubt but also excited/worried to watch the off season moves.  We will need plenty.

We need a 3rd option behind Davis and Schifino, we have no one consistent to help out. Johnson can be one of the best players on the court and quickly become the worst.  Bates doesn't play up to his ranking either.  Galloway finds ways to contribute but has his limitations.

Makeup calls suck as well.

Truth is when I'm watching a Big Ten game right now, quite often I end up switching to another non-Big Ten game because I get tired of watching the style of play.  It's not a good look.

I for one am tired and worn out of the Kopp experiment. It’s been C - -.

Had big moment opportunities to have huge impact in last night’s game…… No results.

Their is no alternative.  I will take Miller Kopp playing 40 if Bates sits.  His shots are going to fall more often than not and his defense is undervalued.

IU will have a lot to offer.  Lots of guys on the team graduating or leaving in the offseason, but the beat will go on.  I fully expect we will see a talent drop next year but it won't be as dramatic as it would be at other places with what we should be able to bring in.  Reneau, Geronimo, Galloway, Bates, Gunn (despite suggestions here otherwise), and Banks I would assume are back.  Who knows what is going on with Duncomb.  The staff isn't stupid....there will be a priority on looking for a post or two and a point guard.

Who caused the T on the bench?

I thought it was CMW right hand man that no one knows what his name is or know what he does.  That might have been the first time I have noticed him other than not looking like he’s ready for a nap sitting back in his chair.

That's Armond "Money" Hill

Excellent point. Woody def plays a style that I think will excel far better in the tourney than say a Northwestern and Rutgers style. I looked back at the best B1G team in the last decade in terms of tourney success (Michigan under Beilein). In their 2 National runner-up years they they finished tied for 4th in '13 and tied for 3rd in '18 in the B1G regular season standings. Crazy to me they never won a regular season title either of those years.

Agreed, great point.

I say get us to at least a 5 seed, and I like our chances for a run in the tournament.

At least we shouldn't have a nightmare travel schedule this year brought on by the play-in game and a long overnight flight delay to a different time zone to worry about again.

I think Gunn should get some (not all or most) of Bates minutes. We desperately need a guy that can knock down open shots. Kopp and Bates are incredibly inconsistent on a game to game basis. Bates is one of the most Jekyll and Hyde players I can remember. Gunn has the upside and more importantly, imho, the right “killer” mentality. Should be getting the young guys experience in these games, so that they aren’t a deer in headlights by the time they are thrust into the larger roles. Jay Wright said this when he was on the broadcast for our game.
