It absolutely stinks for the college game, but unfortunately IUBB is going to have to play the game.  This means considering if these guys are any good and worth the money.  I don't know if this player is.

As Coach Cig once said: "You tell me what the rules are, and I'll thrive within the rules."

Just eyeballing this, two-way players make around ~$650K, and if they have no hope to get called up from the G League to the NBA I can see why they might want to get switch to college and use up any eligibility they have left to get ~$1M+ per season.  And the guys who are just on G-League contracts don't make much at all and I'd think all of them would prefer college ball.

But yea, I'll say it again, it stinks for the college game.

Guy has actually played in NBA games, 0 percent chance he should have eligibility.

I have a Trentyn Flowers story that some of the MOD’s might remember from a few years back:

When Woody was recruiting Rakease Passmore I went to see him and Combine Academy his junior year at a showcase event. Trentyn Flowers was a teammate of his that year, something like the 4th high school he’d gone to. By blind luck I ended up sitting next to Flowers’ parents. Figured that out when he came over and gave Mom a hug. They couldn’t have been nicer folks. They talked my ear off the entire game. When I asked about his recruitment, because what the hell, Mom said that if it was purely a basketball decision it would be Creighton because they loved McDermott, they loved the facilities and the offense and Trent felt really comfortable there. But, it wasn’t going to be Creighton because, as Dad flat out told this stranger, “They don’t have nearly enough money.” He made it 100% clear that the biggest check was the only factor. He thought it was gonna be KU but the process was ongoing. They were as transactional as it gets. Then U of L swept in with, presumably, the biggest check and Flowers reclassed to ‘23 and committed. He was on campus for a couple of months before he split for the Australian League. So, I believe he’s 20 and has played for 4 high schools, was on a college campus, played in the Australian League and has been with a couple of NBA orgs. Long way of saying, if you were gonna bet on what 2-way guy would break the barrier and take the college money and run, this is probably your guy.
Here’s the thing: he really looks the part and he’s a talented kid but he’s not particularly good. He flashes everything you want but with the exception of a short stretch in the ABL he’s never actually done it anywhere. If DDV is looking at this, ok, I guess, but I really don’t know what you should be expecting.

I'm just really confused. The guy "has been with a couple of NBA orgs" and now wants to come back to play in college and the NCAA et al is fine with that?

I fully understand that the NCAA is, at best, a paper tiger, but, dang, son... Now guys are suing the NCAA and schools for more eligibility, when we're already seeing 6 and 7 year "seniors", COVID year notwithstanding.

We now have an absolute free agency situation in college that puts the MLB/NBA/NFL free agency to shame. No salary cap, just general free-for-all environment that makes it hard to stomach being a fan of any school or program. This gimme gimme gimme, "Who's on first" scenario has ruined "amateur athletics".

Joe Tipton has had to eat a little crow with his latest tweet.

Florida, Michigan, Clemson, Indiana, and Texas Tech are not expected to be in the mix for Trentyn Flowers, sources told @On3sports.

This has Muss written all over it.

The UNC fake class scandal broke the NCAA. They spent 7 years on that one and came up empty. They're not even trying anymore.

Unbelievable!  They need to do away with the NCAA and start a new governing body over college sports.

I’ve been saying it is going to happen for some time. And it will in some manner. I’d previously put the timeline somewhere in the next decade. I might revise that to 1-2 years.

If this were happening in football the NCAA would be toast already. But the lines between pro (ie just NFL) and college are much more “bright” there and players already have to stay 3 years.

In litigation the defendant matters. A lot of the big cases you hear about at the Supreme Court Ct have curated defendants.

I bring that up just to say the NCAA is about the worst defendant you could have for this. Their credibility is shot and has been for a long time. Continually running to, or getting taken to, court and losing is only making things worse. They simply can’t be the organization to sort this out moving forward even if they were competent enough, which I highly doubt they are anyways.  At the very least they should get a rebrand and a fresh coat of paint.

Someone from the B1G and/or SEC needs to take charge if someone hasn’t already.  There won’t be much urgency so long as football is going smoothly. But basketball is getting so messy I’m not sure it doesn’t force their hand. I think most agree that paying the players in some form is acceptable, but they can’t risk their collegiate niche and brand and become just another minor league for the NBA/NFL.  The more absurd things become the closer they get to not being able to put the pieces back together.

The whole NIL thing is, at best, a scam. These kids are not getting paid for their name, image or likeness. They're being paid to play and the NCAA is trying to sell is as name, image and likeness. It's all a ruse... if you want to pay the players, fine... but call it that... don't p!$$ on my leg and tell me it's raining.

The whole revenue sharing is/was supposed to fix that, but not even close.

The worst part is that some of those who cannot make it in the professional ranks are finding ways to stay and play for 6 or 7 years or more and getting paid. Because in the NBA and the NFL there are 30 and 32 teams, respectively vying for the best players to hire and pay, but in college there are over 300 "employers" seeking out players to pay. It's a simple matter of the math.

To the extent that I’d be sympathetic to a G-League kid going the college route, a situation like Pate is probably as close as it would get. He signed with G-League Ignite after classing up knowing he would be playing a minimum of 2 years with them before he would be draft eligible. It folded after his 1st year and he was denied a draft eligibility waiver because he was still 18. He played a year abroad which I guess was kind of a mess and then went undrafted and is now back in the G-League. He’s really young and it wouldn’t bother me if the kid played in college given that he would have under today’s circumstances.

Seems like a manufactured distinction. It’s been happening for a couple years and people have mostly rolled with it. Most here cheered when Woody loaded up his last season and we all knew what they were paid for.

Your last paragraph is what is going to blur the lines beyond all recognition and upset people, including prominent coaches and/or ADs. Can you imagine the press conference someone like Hurley will have if his #1 seeded Huskies get bounced by a team that picks up in February a dominant center who has played in the NBA before?

With Woodson, it didn't matter how much he spent or who he got... he still had the impossible task of "coaching" them.

But, yeah, the NBAer who couldn't cut it coming back to college will cause heartburn for some/many.

Jeff Goodman - Washington’s Wesley Yates is out indefinitely after wrist surgery.

We play Washington on Jan. 4.

Bryson Tucker reunion night.

Stopping/slowing Hannes Steinbach (sp) is mission critical #1.

Guess we didn’t land that mid season Center afterall, lol.
