This is a common take but it’s wrong. UK won title in 2011. Since

21-12. NIT
29-11 runner up
38-1 final four. Thank god Wisconsin
27-9 2nd round
32-6 E8
26-11 S16
30-7 E8
25-6 Covid cancel top seed likely 1 or 2
9-16 terrible year. Covid. Definitely a WTF
26-8 1st round upset.

Any team in America would take these results except maybe Duke, lol.

It’s just a cope some IU fans have adopted. It’s easier to pretend that he doesn’t get results (rendering his recruiting tactics not worth it) than it is to accept that UK has been great under his command. I was born in 1994. We’ve had four 25+ year seasons since then. One elite eight appearance. Calipari has eleven 25+ win seasons in thirteen seasons at UK. Six SEC titles. Seven elite eight appearances (with one canceled tournament).

But hey, at least when we lose we do it the right way. I’d hate to have Calipari and, gasp, win.

I just looked up that 38-1 team roster for a reminder. My god.

Harrison twins
Devin Booker
Karl Anthony Towns
Will Caulie Stein
Trey Lyle
Tyler Ulis
Marcus Lee
Dakari Johnson
Alex Poythress

Omg…..

You think Calipari sends Nike a Christmas card every year? Gets paid 10 million a year to coach that talent against college teams and complain how young they are. Lol.

Look at all your years since 2015:

2016 - overrated talent (led by Skal) lost to IU in round of 32.

2017 - Lost to eventual champion UNC. But absolutely blew a chance for a Final Four by allowing 12 straight Tar Heel points in the last 5 minutes.

2018 - Had a Final Four for the taking but laid an egg against Kansas St.

2019 - Had another Final Four practically given to them when they faced an Auburn team they had beaten twice during the regular season AND  the Tigers had just lost their best inside player to an ACL injury. And still lost.

2020 - no way they were going to be a 1-seed, not ranked 8th in the final polls. Kansas, Gonzaga, Baylor, Florida St and Dayton all would have gotten nods over the Cats. And, remember, this is the same UK team who was ranked #1 and lost to Evansville AT HOME. Even though they only lost 6 games, they were extremely inconsistent most of the year. Probably a GOOD thing for Cal that Covid canceled the tournament.

2021 - Can’t blame that on Covid. Just a really bad team.

2022 - Again, lost to an opponent they had no business losing to. Just like in 2018. Just like in 2019.

As I said, Calipari does a great job coaching up young talent. But he hasn’t had a top talent like Townes since 2015. Without a player like that, the inexperience comes back to bite you almost every time.

Do you have good teams with the OAD approach? Maybe - but in my admittedly-biased opinion turning your roster over nearly every year doesn’t give you the best chance for success, especially the deeper one goes in the Tournament. UK’s results since 2015 prove that out.

I think most here would love to lose in the Elite 8 or to claim COVID saved Woody from a probable run past the Sweet 16. Take the name out of the formula and we’d be **** talking anyone who would listen that our program was the best.

Funny how those crimson-colored glasses seem to be super glued on.

In the 7 years since 2015, he’s gone 27-9, 32-6, 26-11, 30-7, 25-6, 9-16, and 26-8. Two elite eights and a sweet 16 (in six possible tournaments). Made 5 of 6 tournaments. Won the SEC 3 times and finished 2nd two times. I really wouldn’t consider that “not doing squat.” Calipari’s approach works. Is it the “best approach”? I guess that’s debatable. But IU’s approach most certainly isn’t.

The approach is nearing an end (2-4 years) as they allow the elite talent to go straight to the league and other options. However the transfer portal will be the new One and done phase of the next decade and Kentucky will be at the forefront of the movement with that dedication to spending to win. And Nike.

So, winning a bunch of games is “success”?

”Not doing squat” is in reference to expectations. How many times has UK had top recruiting classes? Yet not a single Final Four since 2015.

Isn’t the main goal to win a National Championship? You really think being perpetually young is the optimal way to achieve that? Or is the celebration because you had 6 players from your team selected in the NBA draft?

Um, yes? I’d love to see a 30 win IU team in my lifetime. Hasn’t happened yet, but maybe one day it will.

One team wins the NC each year. Are the other 300+ teams all failures? Calipari has high expectations because almost every year he fields a team capable of going all the way. But no coach is going to go to the final four every year. It’s never going to happen in modern day basketball in a lose and go home tournament setting. If you go deep in the tournament year in and year out, you’re giving your team a chance at winning it all. In 7 of 12 seasons Calipari’s teams have played for a final four berth.

In 2017, UK went 32-6, 16-2 in SEC play, won both the SEC regular season and tournament championships, and made it to the elite eight. You consider that “not doing squat.” Id love for IU to have a season where they “didn’t do squat” if that’s what it entails.

Set expectations low and “overachieve” by just making the tourney. I feel like we, as IU fans, have been brainwashed by this the last decade+. Personally, I’d love to watch my team underachieve its way past the Sweet 16. It’s going on 20 years since IU has accomplished that on the court. Although, we have achieved that many times in the summer ;)

Frustration caused by IU's lack of success triggers mindless attacks on rival programs. When IU recaptures its winning tradition and begins to compete for national championships again fans will be in a position to criticize programs that today are consistently more successful. Until then, these kinds of remarks are at best silly.

Kentucky board just in case anyone wanted to tell them how great they are.   Not sure posting how great they have been is going to go over well on an IU basketball message board

68 teams make the field, 1 wins the title.  The tournament can be a crapshoot, so sometimes the best teams don't win.  Calipari has them in a position to compete for the title pretty well every year, they play for a Final Four more than we make the tournament.

Sign me up for "not doing squat" when those are the results.

I loathe UK but we shouldn't be talking when we just hope to make a 68 team field.

Hey, while y'all are on the Kentucky board, if you want to read a bunch of stuff from posters that readily welcome your point of view, you should pop into this thread:

https://kentucky.forums.rivals.com/threads/the-tea-leaves-are-saying-that-indiana-is-back-on-kentuckys-schedule-soon.375511/

It's chock full of tasty treats such as, "I think you are smoking leaf, not reading tea leaves, because Kentucky's full schedule is out, and thank God no IUse2Be. Who wants to play a program that hasn't even won a CONFERENCE tournament in more than 35 years, and that has been past the Sweet 16 once in 30 years? Indiana will be decent this year based on virtually everyone, including TDJ returning from the team that lost by 30 to St. Mary's in their last game - a rare NCAA tournament appearance!. Then back to Bubble Watches. With a 70-year-old head coach with one-year of experience in college hoops."

And personally? I do not really wanna hear about how they make a valid point with their posts of this ilk. If you like what you're reading at Rupp Rafters, it may be your happy place! Enjoy.

I really don’t care if it “goes over well” here or not. I’m not posting about Kentucky’s success because I love Kentucky and want to brag about the team. UK’s success is being downplayed here to excuse our recruiting misses, I.e., recruiting top talent isn’t that important because look at UK, they get the best players and they aren’t that great.

That doesn’t jive with me because I want IU to be as good as UK. They’ve been a top 3 program during Calipari’s tenure and their success during that period completely blows IU out of the water. It pisses me off. I want IU to be elite. Does the IU administration? Eh. I don’t think so. There’s no reason IU can’t have the same success, but the administration (and a contingent of the fan base) doesn’t want to do what it takes to have UK’s success. So, instead, we get what we’ve gotten over the past two decades.

And you shouldn’t care if it goes well.   It’s your right to cope with IU’s failure over the last 2 decades and compare them to the top college program during that time and expect IU to recruit on the same level despite what you have seen in your life time.   The people on the other end of the argument shouldn’t care if it doesn’t set well with you if they think Cal is a piece of trash and they bash Kentucky.    I’m just glad that there  are different opinions on the subject so the debate isn’t boring.  It would be boring if everyone slurped up Cal and Kentucky  or it would be boring if everyone hated them.   Glad with can view it without blue and white colored glasses

My last thing about Cal, I would rather IU go 0-31 than have Calapari as coach at IU. Don't like him as a person and the way he builds a roster.  I don't like the fact that he left two programs on probation and had to forfeit final 4 appearances

Not true because we always attacked UK on how they have the most major violations in college sports. This happened even when we were one of the top programs.

I compare IU to UK because UK is a “blue blood” program. Kansas, Duke, UNC, UK, UCLA. Those are your blue bloods. IU used to be one, though not really in my lifetime. If we have aspirations to regain our ‘blue blood’ status, then the UK’s of college basketball are who we need to compare ourselves to, including in recruiting. If we’re going to accept that we’re now just another run-of-the-mill program then of course comparing our recruiting to UK is silly.
