Not true because we always attacked UK on how they have the most major violations in college sports. This happened even when we were one of the top programs.

That's my point. When we are a top program we are worthy to criticize rival programs. Otherwise, it is sour grapes.

One team wins the NC each year. Are the other 300+ teams all failures? Calipari has high expectations because almost every year he fields a team capable of going all the way. But no coach is going to go to the final four every year. It’s never going to happen in modern day basketball in a lose and go home tournament setting.

Do all 300 + teams recruit to the level UK does?

How many of those teams have lost consistently to teams they in no way should have lost to?

2018

2019

2022

All 3 years they lost to teams with less talent. In all 3 losses the lack of a veteran leader was telling.

Now, is it possible that you COULD win a title with the OAD approach? It’s possible - but how likely? Even Duke - who had 3 of the top 4 RSCI recruits and arguably the best coach of all time - couldn’t get past a veteran Michigan State team in 2019.

You think that is the way to go? Become a Kentucky fan - or Duke fan. IU will never become like them. And that’s not a bad thing, either.

My last thing about Cal, I would rather IU go 0-31 than have Calapari as coach at IU. Don't like him as a person and the way he builds a roster.  I don't like the fact that he left two programs on probation and had to forfeit final 4 appearances

He has a lifetime contract at IU, so I don’t think you have to worry about him ever coaching at IU. Would’ve been interesting to see how different history would’ve turned out if IU had hired him instead of Sampson, though. But alas.

Anyway, his approach is just one way to do it. Whether you recruit like Calipari or not, you need the horses to get Calipari’s results. Let’s get the horses so we can finally stop sucking.

Kentucky board just in case anyone wanted to tell them how great they are.   Not sure posting how great they have been is going to go over well on an IU basketball message board

No kidding.

Do I want IU to be better? Without question. But building something sustainable IMO gives you a better chance at the ultimate goal: National Championships.

I’m fine with getting better horses; nobody wins with Mr Ed (Priller). If we’re turning over the roster every year, you’re never building anything.

I really don’t care if it “goes over well” here or not. I’m not posting about Kentucky’s success because I love Kentucky and want to brag about the team. UK’s success is being downplayed here to excuse our recruiting misses, I.e., recruiting top talent isn’t that important because look at UK, they get the best players and they aren’t that great.

That doesn’t jive with me because I want IU to be as good as UK. They’ve been a top 3 program during Calipari’s tenure and their success during that period completely blows IU out of the water. It pisses me off. I want IU to be elite. Does the IU administration? Eh. I don’t think so. There’s no reason IU can’t have the same success, but the administration (and a contingent of the fan base) doesn’t want to do what it takes to have UK’s success. So, instead, we get what we’ve gotten over the past two decades.

You hit the nail on the head when you mentioned the biggest issue with IU basketball the last 20 years: The IU Administration.

Dolson I believe is trying to right the ship. But you don’t eliminate 20 years of ineptitude overnight. This is a big year for the basketball program to make a statement that they can play at an elite level again.

I compare IU to UK because UK is a “blue blood” program. Kansas, Duke, UNC, UK, UCLA. Those are your blue bloods. IU used to be one, though not really in my lifetime. If we have aspirations to regain our ‘blue blood’ status, then the UK’s of college basketball are who we need to compare ourselves to, including in recruiting. If we’re going to accept that we’re now just another run-of-the-mill program then of course comparing our recruiting to UK is silly.

Results and on court results don’t lie.  IU is nowhere near those programs as of today. We both want the same thing we just see the path to reaching those schools as different.     There is no magic pill to erase the past 20+ years of mediocrity.   Iu has out themselves in this position and now they are going to have to fight like heck to change their perception of how recruits view the program.   I do feel IU can get back to being mentioned with those schools but that time isn’t now.    In my opinion before you can compare their recruiting with those other programs they have to take smaller steps and smaller recruiting wins.  In other words instead of worrying about one and dones and top end talent recruit some kids that can actually produce a winning conference record.   Sad to say but that’s where the program is at.   Why should these top end kids chose IU right now in everyone’s opinion?  That last why this year is so important.  On courts results plus sending a kid like JHS to league in one year is massive for a program.     Some wished NIL would of let IU skip steps to get back to where they once where.    Don’t think that’s going to happen.    IU is just going to have to fight for it and change the narrative.    Let’s see what coach Woodson and staff can do in year 2.

I firmly believe that the single best thing that can happen to consistently raise IU's recruiting talent level is winning. This year. A lot. And on national television.

HOWEVER... another important factor: Current IU alum NBA players and former players that have any real positive effect on recruiting?

  1. Victor Oladipo
  2. Mike Woodson as an NBA coach

Sorry Cody, OG, Thomas B, Eric Gordon, Isiah Thomas, and Romeo ... not so much you guys.

So, the second best thing is for Jalen Hood Schifino to be a lottery pick and a notably admired NBA player.

Maybe the third best thing? Gabe Cupps has about  as many Instagram followers as Cody Zeller, Eric Gordon, and Romeo Langford... combined. If Cupps is hot stuff there will be so much "LeBron's favorite young pg" PR our happy heads will spin.

Sampson shouldn't buave ever been hired at IU in the first place.  I am truly sorry you haven't ever seen IU at it's best and hope you will get bro see it some day. Saying that from a long time fan who has seen it at it's best would never want bto be howbUK does things.

I see you say that just winning championships isn't everything but why was Cream get fired one year after winning the big ten.  In a five year period he went to 3 sweet 16's and won the big ten 2 times

I also think this year could be a big year, which is why I’m as concerned with the 2023 class as I am right now. Our biggest problem has been an inability to build on our success. Well, that was Crean’s biggest problem because Archie never had success at IU.

2011/2012, we have a great season and he’s able to build on it with an even better year in 2012/2013. But the season after that was a disaster. 2015 was a little better. We sneak into the tournament but lose in the at round. 2016 was great, then 2017 was another disaster. It was a roller coast ride.

So, my fear is that we have a great year this year and then follow it up with a 2014 type of IU season. Like the 2013 team, our current team is going to lose a lot of players after the season.

Excellent post, Sir, even by your usual standards. If you look at the offer lists from ‘23 to ‘24 to ‘25, they’re offering overall higher rated kids year over year. That’s not coincidental. It’s clearly with the belief that a couple of years of success and the open doors that provides gives them real shots at more kids than they’ve had early on. And even with that they brought in 2 top 25ish kids in ‘22. It’s a major brand rebuild, no question, but there just aren’t many programs with the ceiling this one has. This year’s the key to it all. They go out and beat a couple of the big early season names, compete for the top of the B1G and make a sweet 16/elite 8 kind of tourney run and IU gets real cool, real fast. They leak oil all year and sneak into the tournament as a 10 or something and they’re 1 and done and then you’re a program with a 65yo coach and a bunch of questions and you’re back to the drawing board.

Because Crean was very inconsistent and he had lost all his recruiting momentum. In his last four seasons he went 17-15 (T-8th); 20-14 (T-7th); 27-8 (1st); and 18-16 (T-10th). The following season was projecting to look even worse as his incoming recruiting class was very meh. Winning the NC isn’t everything, but you still have to do some winning. Crean had stopped winning.

This thread has really gone off the rails.

So much hand-wringing over a top 60ish recruit going elsewhere. It would've been nice to have landed him but it's not as though he is a program changing talent.

Yes, IU has missed on a few others recently which is a bit concerning but the level of "woe is me" some people are showing is out of proportion imo.

If IU does as well or better than expected this season, it should help recruiting. If they tank then recruiting will tank. IU is targeting a lot of highly ranked, very talented players in the next few classes. This season will make or break those recruitments, I think.

Crean also wore out his welcome with the Indiana high school coaches.   Once that happened it was only a matter of time before it cost him

I would hate to always look at the pessimistic pointb of view because that would be a miserable way to live.  We are picked by many to win the conference and be a top 15 team in the country so that is what I am concerned about.  I won't think about the 23-24 class until next June when the players come back to campus.

As for next year if everyone comes back that can then I think we will he a top 25 team

If JHS and Bates leaves then guys like Keiser and Page wouldn't make up for that lost anyways.

This year is a big key. Win big and recruits will come. That simple.

Make sure they get paid, too. What did the KSU point guard get paid to transfer to Miami?

There are many ways to skin the cayuts. The way we've done it for the past few decades is not the optimal way. Great for the program we've all stuck around with many others to continue our support.
