General Coach Candidate News

Been saying Randy Bennett for at least 10 years. Idk if you can get him out of the Bay Area now though. Seems like I saw he’s been there 24 years or something the other nignt

As good as there is. St Mary’s is destination viewing. But he is just a pure basketball coach. Is not wired for the outside noise of jobs like this. He’s exactly where he should be.

I like Beard. He can definitely coach basketball. I wanted him as coach before he took the Texas job.  I don't see IU hiring him.  Maybe there's a slim chance that IU pays for a thorough background and his girlfriend at the time says that she embellished everything.  Even then, I think IU would look at several candidates first not wanting the negative reaction that would follow.  If Beard was to get the job, I would speculate that Pat Knight might return as one of his assistants.

I get all that and welcome Dolson and company to do their due diligence with him and if they find him to be acceptable, I hope others on here do too.  I am not getting any younger and I want a proven winner and Beard fits that.  Now I was skeptical of Dusty May, but he’s at least proven he can win at a P5 school out of the gate but him sustaining it, I’m a little skeptical; however, I would take him over any mid-major coach because I don’t want another Archie Miller.  Brad Stevens would be a homerun; however, I still don’t think he would take job

Brad Stevens hasn’t coached the college game in nearly 12 years……

Pitino and Calipari both went from college to the NBA then back to college.  If they can do it, I am darn sure if that

The Brad Stevens obsession is beyond weird at this point. This will be the third coaching change that people want a guy who has never shown the least bit of interest in returning to college let alone IU. A guy who it was widely reported didn’t like the recruiting game but is an option now when you have to rebuild the roster every spring and hope you are the highest bid. Never say never but highly unlikely.

I hear you... another way of looking at it though, is that recruiting has never been as openly transactional as it is now. That is much more congruent with his experience in the NBA than the old-school recruiting he reportedly did not care for.

As for hoping you are the highest bid? It doesn't seem like IU will have a problem doing that for their top priorities. He can get the best of both worlds with roster building and coaching... It's a long shot, and probably now or never, so...  hope away...

Talking weird or not weird… I remember Stevens or someone else analyzing his use of mathematics in scouting players and teams to develop strategies against opponents….it was like it was more detailed and in depth than what is normal.

Got pretty heated in the Fire CMW thread over Beard. This is the spot for that discussion, and as I just read this tonight, want to chime in.

There were several absolutes thrown around…

1. Beard is an alcoholic. Has that been verified? Or is that based on the one public incident?

2. IU optics being what they are, no way is he hired…The Cleveland Browns signed a quarterback as the face of their franchise who had multiple incidents of abuse towards women. The stands were still full regardless.

3. We would be pilloried by the national media for hiring Beard. Maybe. Or maybe not. Tom Izzo has turned a blind eye to multiple transgressions in his program. Yet he is revered by the media.
I’m not condoning what Beard did one bit. In no way is it right to harm a woman. I also believe in the idea of second chances for people who have seriously addressed their issues.

A famous guy once said, “ Let him who is without sin among you be the first to cast stones.”

I ‘m afraid I don’t qualify.

Supposedly they took a family vote and he lost 3-1, with him being the one. If true, that'd suggest interest for at least this college job. We also know one of those no votes is no longer there.

I can't say for certain it's true, and I'll believe he's coming when it's announced. I'm not putting much stock in his masshole comment, wouldn't be the first time a coach (at the time anyway) denied interest in a job and left for said job.

And it's possible he never has another incident.

Not liking the recruiting game would be great for him now. Basically gets to keep being a GM.

Not that I think this is happening

Beard is a guy similar to Pitino in the fact that doesn’t matter where he’s at he wins and immediately elevates a program. He has to be near the top of any list if you are serious.

Strictly in terms of coaching he'd be a great hire. I don't blame people for not wanting his baggage.

I'd be a fan of Luke Murray if compared to McCollum or McMillan. Much more in line with winning at the highest levels.

I liked your post, though I personally disagree, because I like hearing all the different opinions/perspectives out there.

I would have no interest in Luke Murray at this time. Don't think IU is the job for a first time head coach.

Sure he's been an assistant at Xavier, Louisville, and UConn but never been a HC before.

Know I value McCollum's 4 D2 national titles more highly than many others do... maybe that translates up a level, maybe it doesn't. But he's done it as the main guy and looking pretty good at Drake. Also feels like more of a Midwestern guy, better fit IMO. Not saying McCollum should be at the top of the short list, but that's why I'd prefer him to Murray, who by all accounts has a bright future ahead of him in the sport.

Another coach I think is really good but wouldn't fit here? Shaheen Holloway. You mentioned Mick Cronin yesterday I think... that would be A-OK with me.

Cronin would be great, but he has quite literally what may be the highest buyout in the country.

If this is indeed all coming down, then IMO Dolson has his man at the very least with a handshake deal.

I disagree. He knows that it's gone on too long and waiting would only make it worse. Handshake deal would be possible and excellent, but not needed to do the correct personnel action now.
