General Coach Candidate News

That  fluke FF run did earn him another year plus a raise and extension which likely results in a higher buyout. So he has that going for him.

It just goes to show that the NCAAT is wild  and crazy things happen. 1 good run does not indicate a good coach, nor does a flameout or two indicate a bad coach. They're data points in the larger resume.

On the other hand, a coach with a recent FF is available with no buyout! Imagine what he could do with IU's resources! lol

Honestly…this is what worries me about Woodson. The “maybe I’m retiring too soon “ comments after yesterday’s game. I know I mentioned this on the board last week…but each win empowers Woodson…he doesn’t want to leave. A couple wins in the tourney and who knows, maybe we’re stuck with him. It probably won’t happen…but the thought will be in the back of my mind… until he finally packs up his office and walks out the door.

Unless he didn’t sign anything, it’s not his call.

This could have happened but too much has happened since his “retirement” for that to be a real possibility.

at least I feel confident in that he is GONE

Yeah. He hasn’t handled “his retirement” in the best way. I’m not as confident as you. I certainly wouldn’t make a bet that he would return but nonetheless, it’s in the back of my mind.

I thought he was going to get fired last year. But they won the ACC tournament and got into the dance and made a run. He isn’t a good coach and he got an additional year bc of 1 run. He is the prime example of why I think k regular season success should be more important than NCAA success when hiring a new head coach.

So much of the tournament requires the bracket to break your way. I don't get too worked up over a lack of tourney success. Getting there every year like clockwork is more important.

In general, yes.

But if you want a real championship level coach capable of multiple titles they have to be able to win different ways to navigate your best teams to a title. A guy that teaches to his system well but is inflexible can hand wave away bad matchups in the regular season as only a couple of losses. But those same matchup difficulties are fatal in a single elimination tournament.

That is different though from Tom Crean being carried to a FF by one of the greatest individual efforts ever with Dwayne Wade.  People shouldn’t get enamored by those runs.
