General Coach Candidate News

I'm not comparing Huss to Drew and Otzelberger, but I'm curious why he is an inferior possibility for discussion compared to any other mid-major coach. Because a mid-major coach may end up being our next coach.

Because if we get to a low major coach (high point is not mid….mid major would be conferences like Mountain West, A-10, AAC) then IU has struck out on their primary candidate list.  IU bball can spend, so if we aren’t trying to get a coach that compares to Drew or Otz, what are we doing?

Compared to the McCollum, Schertz, McMillan discussions? For those who think those are also too "rich" I'm good with Huss being dismissed. (I don't think any of those are out of the question.

Hell, I took heat for suggesting Dennis freakin Gates! You know why Gates is an unlikely option? Because he'd rather be at Missouri. Equal pay, better conference, just as successful a program (far better this year), and he is building it himself. Yet people turn their noses up at him too.

I think the issue is it doesn’t feel like we’ve moved to oh crap it’s totally gonna be a mid major or low major swing yet. I don’t think (based on nothing but vibes) that we have moved on from the tier 1 P5 guys yet. I’m not convinced we’ve even really gotten to the tier 2 P5 guys yet (Brownell, Cronin types).

That said, if we do get to the oh crap it’s totally gonna be a mid major guy, I don’t think 2 years at a low major will get a look (even if he maybe should). Had Creighton taken a step back without him, the assoc HC title might mean more to me personally, but GM doesn’t seem to have missed a beat without him. JMO.

None of those tweets eliminates Brad Stevens as a possibility.

Do I think it will be Stevens? No.

But those tweets pretty much add nothing.

Greg McDermott would kill it at IU.  I watch alot of Big East games (follow Butler also) and he’s the real deal.  Great demeanor, gets the most from his players, could handle the spotlight.  Also, my 2 cents on Brad based on my observations as someone who knows him and also those who know him better.  He’s very, very  unlikely to come back to the college game—even to IU.

But that post speaks more than any of the tweets.

Thanks for adding to the discussion @westgym!

Let's say, hypothetically, that Brad Stevens is the coach. Will he succeed here? Elaborate!

I’ll bite Tom. I don’t think he’s quite the slam dunk he’s made out to be, and there is at least marginal risk. Not the least of which is that I have a hard time believing he’d be coach for 10+ years. Chances are he’d be as advertised, but I don’t think he’s as sure a thing as Oats or Pearl in terms of FF and title probabilities. It’s one reason I wish there was donor support to take whatever offer BS likely turns down and at least make Oats say no, but it doesn’t sound like there is stomach for 10+ million a year for anyone but the whale.

98% of this thread will have nothing to do with the next coach. There are tons of names discussed here, all but one of which will not be the next coach and most of whom will never be in consideration. I'll never understand why people get so fixated on not discussing one particular name.

I think this happens when someone with a different view of who they want doesn't align with what they want then the shut it down, attack the person or proposed coach and even lash out in some ways.

The fact is we as a fan base should be able to have a discussion on potential names and not attack each other but I don't see that happening in today's world of message boards or anything else.  As I have grown older, I have learned to listen and value other thoughts and opinions.  It doesn't mean I agree with them but at least hear them out and not attack them.  Work life has taught me to not shut down others as it may keep them from sharing in the future and you may lose out on some good ideas or information.  Just my 2 cents.

Plus, it just a coaching search for a team we all love.  Not a life decision we are making for our family or friends.

I sincerely hope this wasn’t about my fart joke. If that is the line then my time on this site will come to an abrupt end.

Nooooo. There is no fart joke that won't elicit a smirk at the very least. By all means, keep it gassy.

It was my reaction after waking up and trying to peruse the day's activity only to see some posters evidently had idle time and a horse not dead enough to their liking.
