Calipari went from Memphis to Kentucky

Bill Self went Tulsa to Illinois

Jay Wright went Hofstra to Villanova

It’s almost always the case. Very occasionally do coaches go from one successful power 5 conf team to another, and I can’t think of one off-hand that willingly left a championship program to go to another.

There’s almost no way to make the job attractive enough for a current P5 conf coach, and certainly not someone like Scott Drew (who Baylor hired from Valpo).

I often wonder what level of recruitment these high school kids are actually looking for from the head coach. Do they expect multiple visits or are they looking for more contact? What makes them "feel the love"? Does a text message from the head coach congratulating a player after a good game suffice or do they actually need to show up for the games?

I'm a high level guy or my kid is . I want the stroke . I wanna be the belle of the ball .

Cal did.  Roy did.

This isn't a guy I would want for our next coach but I am posing the question. How did Woodson get hired over Dane fife? Let's leave the rumors of why he was fired out for the moment. He did a pretty darn good job at ipfw then went and sat on the bench behind 1 of the very best coaches in the game! Just talking qualifications wise fife seems like the safer hire. I get alot goes into coaching hires. My guess is he probably would have been good which is why iu went with the old nba guy lol.

I know people hate him but if it had to be an IU guy, Alford was the only guy ready to step into the job.  Is that the best hire?  Probably not, but if you are restricting yourself to only Indiana guys he was #1 and whoever was below him was a distant 2nd.

Certainly varies with each kid/parent but one thing that seems consistent with kids is how their peers think of them.  Having some big name coaches come to watch your game gets noticed by these peers.  Not being there gets noticed too.  It is kind of the proof of interest with many kids and if not them, then their parents.  A couple of my kids were recruited a lower level and while one liked to talk with the coaches after games the other did not.  Both noticed when coaches were there and that was often one of the first things they commented on after the game.

Aware. I was replying to “he did a nice job there” - not really. For sure not enough to make him a qualified candidate for the IU job vs Woody. That was the question at hand.

all this talk about potential hires down the road really has me thinking deep about what it will take to win here. I am not sure the average fan realizes how hard this job can be. Going to take a special coach.

All the more reason to move on from Woodson now instead of waiting. If it’s “going to take a special coach” then Woodson very clearly isn’t the guy for the job.

Only ones I can think of are Roy Williams from Kansas to UNC and Self from Illinois to Kansas.

Yep, I’d much rather be done with him now knowing he doesn’t have any future players lined up other than Liam. Everything else is looking like mostly portal additions that he’s gonna have to scrounge up, which another coach suited for a long term build that wants to take us where we want to go is more than capable of doing himself anyways with our resources. Woodson getting a new group of guys in the portal is fine and dandy, but haven’t we been shown to this point that he’s gonna be unwilling/unable to use them correctly in an effective college ball style?

I don't disagree with moving on after this year but he's visiting Davis tonight who is a 24 PG and we're still in on Queen who is making his decision in a few weeks. So we're not totally done with the 24 class. We could end up with 2 McDonalds All Americans.

I'll also add this.

After the disastrous Stanford Robinson year Crean made a concerted effort to get more shooters on the squad. Added Zeisloft, Beilfeldt, and gave more minutes to Hartman.

By 2016 the problem was solved.

McNeeley plus two shooters from the portal could solve a ton of problems in very short order.

I'm genuinely concerned that even if we started 5 burger boys, the output on the court wouldn't change much.

I understand people believing that and it won't unless he changes this style. We have to play faster with more 3's and only one big man.

Nice, yeah that’s true. I guess if he’s able to get Davis and Queen on board then that obviously puts more in the bag that he’s got available for next year who would be great additions.

I understand the whole thing about maybe he at least deserves another year because of what he did the first two, and I get that, but I just wonder if knowing he was kinda like a bridge guy to get the program back on track, is there already talk about thinking we’re able to get his replacement as soon as after this season, or are things leaning more towards no talks about that yet and waiting until at least after the 2024 season regardless of the outcome of season and ‘24 recruits he’s able to secure?
i wonder if at this point it’s a matter of even people in his circle  (who would be the ones to talk him into stepping aside) know he’s a guy who isn't gonna be willing to change his style. “Just got to keep working” has been his go-to response to a lot of things lately.
