Dennis Gates with Tim Miles as the associate HC who knows the conference while Gates learns it?

Or better yet, Jim Crews.

And of course, wherever Gates goes Coach Dickey Nut will follow.

Gates' team had a team GPA of 3.43 this year. Nine players made the Fall Academic Honor Roll. Eight made the Dean's List and one made the President's List.

I heard during the game that he took a players video games away, until he got a 3.0 GPA!  How dare you do that to a kid nowadays?! lol

Also heard during the game, Gates has an offensive and defensive coordinator(coach)!  Don't normally hear that in basketball.  This guy is very intriguing to me!

I don't want to rain on the Gates parade. But if he were indeed the guy, does it concern anyone that we wouldn't have any better shooting team?

2020-21:

Cleveland St: FG% - 44.9, FT% - 67.2, 3pt% - 32.3

Indiana: FG% - 43.5, FT% - 67.1, 3pt% - 33.1

2019-20:

Cleveland St: FG% - 41.6, FT% - 66.4, 3pt% - 29.4

Indiana: FG% - 44.5, FT% - 67.9, 3pt% - 32.6

The did improve across the board from year 1 to year 2. But watching our team shoot so poorly so often these past several years....these are not comforting numbers to look at.

Cleveland State scores more points per game than IU. Faster pace I would think.

We have only one common opponent this year—Ohio State in Columbus. We lost by 19–they lost by 6.   We had 100% 3, 4, & 5* players; they had none.

(goes to KenPom)...Cleve St. tempo 66.4 282nd, IU 66.4 284th. Technically faster. Cleveland St. is 1st in Luck! So you got that going for you...

I do not count that as being right!    :)

Beilein delegated the whole defense at UM, first to Billy Donlon and then, with great success, Luke Yaklich. I like the approach. Takes some self-knowledge and humility.

Head coach Beilein and Gates assistant with keys to car of the future. Typically the head coach likes to help pick his predecessor, but I like Beilein and I’m very interested in Gates for the future. He seems to have excellent recruiting skills as well.

This is Gates' salary package at Cleveland St. https://www.crainscleveland.com/kevin-kleps-blog/new-cleveland-state-mens-basketball-coach-dennis-gates-gets-five-year-deal-max#:~:text=Cleveland State will give Gates,a student-athlete development coordinator.
Curious if Gates would be interested in a $500-750K associate HC position under a Beilein-ish elder statesmen and then take the reigns. This idea will all go to waste when CSU makes the tourney, gets the annual 13 over 4 upset and takes a $2 mn/yr gig at BC or another small Power 5/Multi Bid Conference(A10/Big East/AAC) job.

I love this! I meant to quote yours.

I honestly don't think IU makes the move this year. That's some of what I've heard, some of what I know about the AD(department, not director), some about the current economic situation blah blah blah. Anyways, I'm just going on a hypothetical from the rest of this post on out. Here is what I WOULD do...not what is going to happen...Someone asked what my list would be and i'd say a mix between ideally and realistically...

Stevens, Donovan, Bennett...unrealistic. I would try for a Matta or Beilein and hire a top "emerging" candidate as assistant. Matta/Beilein stable things, 2-3 years, hire the up-and-comer the agreed assurance that if they meet certain marks individually they get first consideration for HC. Solid coaches w upside, methinks, would take that opportunity. IU is more of a monster waiting to be unchained than some of you have been beaten down to believe, imo.

I don't live in Indiana... I don't live in the "fishbowl" I hear about all the time. I know more people on the east coast. Maybe IU basketball doesn't sell on national radio talk but I can tell you it does where it matters which is in basketball circles

Hire Matta or Beilein as head coach. Keep Kenya Hunter as an assistant since I don’t think he’s been at IU long enough to make a real impact. Then bring Michael Lewis, Calbert, or Fife in as the head coach in waiting/associate head coach.

Those two paragraphs seem to contradict themselves. Installing the mentor/pupil system this year would work better than waiting another year or even this offseason and having those elder statesmen go somewhere else..you know cuz they're on 'borrowed time'. Those that know, know that the $10.5 mil will end up much less than that between the extended payout and the likelihood Archie gets a comparable coaching job in that time. With the unfortunate timing of this, is the impending exit of President Dundee still an issue; i.e. having a say in whether Archie is fired and having input on the new hire (financials or otherwise)?

P.S. I'm on the east coast. I wish I knew some of those east coast folk you knew...

Maybe it could be a situation where they can have the right guy already picked out -- Say Mack.  So it's a fire and hire, no interm search.  Otherwise, stick with Archie, until you can line the next guy up next year?

If they don't make the move this year it's going to be ugly next year. Half empty Assembly Hall, low ratings...I've watched only a few games this year. Would probably by 0 next year.

Sad thing is...they might actually be better next year and only because of improved guard play and frontcourt depth. If Parker Stewart is as good as people think he is and if Armaan makes another jump that will be the best backcourt in years here. Brunk and Duncomb with Race would be a good frontcourt. Thing is I have zero faith in this coach.

They were different perspectives? Mix of ideally/realistic? I think I said something of the sort...
