I see very few on this board that feel the need for an "IU guy." Probably more prevalent among casual fans who want name recognition and aren't as dialed in to deep-dive substance.

I'm not calling anyone on here out. Mostly on Twitter and this specific tweet from Dakich..

Can someone explain to me why some people are hung up on a coach needing to be an 'IU guy'?

I just don't understand how that makes a difference honestly.

Knight wasn't an 'IU guy'.

I just don't think you can expect by hiring an IU guy from the Knight era that you're going to replicate the success of the 70s-80s. It doesn't work like that.

But if it just needs to be a guy that went to IU.... give me Tim Priller.

I believe it is a "culture" thing that some believe "outsiders" are not capable of understanding the "Indiana way."

Would a guy like Alford understand what IU was better than someone like Archie?  Sure, they were around when IU was rolling.  However, there is an "Indiana guy" that would qualify for the IU position.

Fife is the only one I see that remotely resembles Howard, Painter, Izzo, or Gard when they arrived at their B1G gigs.

IMO the "IU guy" crowd are the old folks who remember the Knight years through 1987 and overlook the fact his last years as head coach weren't that impressive.   Quite honestly, the "IU guy" names that keep getting brought up don't excite me and there's only 1 of the names that has even a slight appeal and that's lukewarm at best.

And Fife would be a god awful choice. We would basically be giving up at that point.

Well that's pretty unkind and conclusory!

Maybe so, but how the hell do I know.  Time tells as to whether less big-name hires are a good idea. For every Mike Davis there's a Tom Allen. For every Tom Allen there's a Mike Davis.

Are we ignoring the fact that since we haven’t won since 87 that maybe we need to redo our administration? At least the people who oversee basketball?

Wrong thread lol

See "BBall Non-Coaching Improvements" thread infra.

Maybe so but I'd say Fife is a bad hire and just trying to please a few nursing home peeps.

Fife isn't an exciting hire by any means. It's not going to pump up the fan base at all. Just please a few people. It really doesn't answer what we need which is a fiery charismatic guy that is going to have Indiana playing fast and fun basketball that also has a toughness to compete with. Hiring Fife is just kinda an "oh well, he's an IU guy like y'all wanted. Be happy."

Then we get into the character part that many have seemed to of set the standards for. If we can't hire Alford, we can't hire Fife who is a big mystery as to what he's known about going on at MSU. I'm not saying Fife knew anything or did anything.

Probably for the same reason some think our roster HAS to be made up of mostly Indiana recruits.  Having in-state players and a coach with IU roots would be nice, but should be a minor consideration.  Best coach + Best players = Best chance for success.

I believe the 87' team had 3 Indiana kids on it. The 81' team had like 8 but star of the show wasn't from Indiana. Even most of our guys from Indiana can't shoot... Giving us a bad name.

My biggest issue with Fife is that he's had exactly one D1 head coaching job, and he went 82-97. Sure it was at IPFW. I don't blame him at all for not turning them into some kind of powerhouse program. BUT, we'd be hiring someone who hasn't succeeded as a head coach just because he's an "IU guy." If we're going that route, might as well hire Steve Alford. At least he's had some high-major success. We shouldn't be hunting for that diamond in the rough. We should be hunting for a proven diamond. If we can't get one to come here, well, then we have bigger problems.

What...it’s not because Rob Phinisee isn’t going to the rim with confidence? It’s actually because repetitive negativity is a way of sucking the joy out of interaction, even when there’s a less vocal group of really smart, pleasant people?

Shocking.

I partly blame the mods for being subservient to “he hasn’t broken the letter of the board rules yet” mindset.

If it helps any mdn82, vacations from the board already started to be handed out last night. For other fine posters who are paying attention, come on back; criticizing or speculation about what will happen to IUBB is still absolutely allowed (and I mean it), but this is an IU fan board, and any repetitbullshirt, ESPECIALLY off topic during game threads, will be dealt with immediately.

Now back to sports talk.

Hip, hip, hooray for Stu!
