Sounds like most new additions (staff/players) will be in place by month’s end. Something I’ve had to grapple with…but DDv doesn’t owe us ‘fast’ signings. Losing out on Conwell sucked but otherwise coach is operating on his own timeline. CSP and lillurk 2 Quote
lillurk Posted April 5 Posted April 5 One thing worth thinking about as the transfer portal matures is that in other sports’ free agency markets, the places where you get the most value for your dollar are the very top of the market, and then much farther down the scale. This is true in leagues largely regardless of the nature of their salary rules — Shohei Ohtani, Juan Soto, Nikola Jokic, SGA, Pat Mahomes, and Saquon Barkley all provide surplus value per dollar to their teams than they actually make versus the average win/dollar in their league, even though they’re among the highest paid in their sport (ps — not an argument about athletes’ salaries, just a point about relative value vs. their peers on the field). But the non-superstars who get paid at the top of the market often end up as a “bad investment” on a win/dollar evaluation. Think about Zach LaVine, late-career Dame Lillard, Paul George: inarguably good basketball players, paid beyond what they contribute to winning. Below the highest tier, you’ve got to scout (draft), identify underperformers who will thrive in other circumstances, develop, capitalize where others where too deep or whatever — think of the Cubs getting Cody Bellinger cheaply two years ago, the Knicks realizing Jalen Brunson could be a superstar while the Mavs wouldn’t even pay him like a 3rd banana, the Pacers turning Aaron Nesmith into a guy who won’t get cooked out of a playoff rotation at wayyy below market for wings, etc. Not totally clear how that’ll work given the strange idiosyncrasies of the transfer portal but I think there’s still a lot of truth in the principles. Otherwise I’m just going off of his schedule of landing players last year that was posted in another thread. Seemed like everyone was signed in mid to late April. But this whole transfer process is just chaotic…and it’s hard to even compare things year to year. BA47591 1 Quote
DChoosier Posted April 5 Posted April 5 My following comment below is not intended to say we need top 25 portal guys. I looked at a CBS article, written at 8:30 am on April 3rd (ie there could have been subsequent signings), and scrolled down the top 25 to see how many of them have signed with a new team. Again, not an “oh my god we need top 25 guys”, but rather how active are those types of signings. My guess going in was that 6-8 of the top 25 had already signed but the actual number is 19/25. EDIT: the ranking list actually went down to the top 50 and I just looked and saw that only 5 of the 26-50 guys have signed so in total 24 of the top 50 have committed Pagoda 1 Quote
DChoosier Posted April 5 Posted April 5 Someone must have funded Louisville with a huge bag$$$$$$. The same CBS ranking shows that 3 of the top 14 portal prospects are going to the Ville and all three were described as good shooters (I vaguely remember what those look like). A few other tidbits: 5 of the top 25 signees are going to the BT and 4 are going to the SEC (I would have figured the SEC would crush the BT) The 5 BT guys have signed with IU, IOWA, UM, PU, UCLA Tucker D is ranked 11th St John’s has signed 3 of the top 15 meaning a crazy 6 of the top 15 are going to Louisville or St John’s! I completely understand which is why I have clearly stated that I was not making an “oh no we need top 25 guys” post. It was merely a look at how active actual signings have been. go iu bb Posted April 5 Posted April 5 I just watched the latest CrimsonCast episode and in it Galen mentions a rumor he heard that blew my mind. He said he's heard that Xavier Booker is getting a couple of million from UCLA. That's crazy if it's true. Maybe IU dodged a bullet if Cronin thinks Booker is worth anywhere close to $2M.
