I agree on Hart and Reeves 100%

RE: Wilcher, I agree 90%

I think he is so talented, he would not get "buried" put IMO likely carve out a 20 min/game role that plays to his strengths (driving/scoring, playmaking). He wants to show he can be a PG and shoot the 3 reliably, but hasn't shown that ability consistently (why he dropped from top 10 to top 40). Don't think he'd be a one and done here at all, maybe on a 2 year plan (or he's a transfer risk). Not sure how realistic he is being with himself about time he will need in school and not sure how much of a factor that will ultimately be in his re-recruitment.

I don't love the fit/make-up class wise of Galloway/Wilcher/Gunn/Newton + Cupps at the 1. It just seems like that wouldn't work out for everyone.

That said, give me all the talent we can get. I will be happy (to varying degrees) with any of these three to round out the roster.

If we get Wilcher, between him, Newton, and Gunn, someone’s gonna be frustrated.

I think even with Reeves, who I’m really hoping for, someone will be upset of Galloway, Newton, Cupps, Gunn.

I’d see Galloway sliding over taking more minutes at the 1. Getting some minutes at the 2. Cupps would be more of a third string alternative option at PG. Then Newton /Gunn trying to earn back up minutes at the 2. Maybe back up minutes At the 3 which would come at Banks expense.

We Will definitely lose X, Walker, (Leal). Likely lose Mgbako, Ware, then (Reeves). 5 spots to recruit for. Then likely approximately 1-2 transfers in the scenario I’m looking at.

Am I getting ahead of myself……. Lol.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong because I can't find the video, but I remember Newton's commitment to IU where he said he believed he had the opportunity to start at IU.  I worry about that mindset

A healthy Jakai Newton has the opportunity to start at Indiana immediately. That doesn’t mean he would, but it absolutely means that the opportunity will exist. When healthy I believe he can be that good.

Without question.

Jakai isn’t rated higher because of his injury. He’s got elite athleticism and has an extremely high ceiling.

What I'm saying is, if Newton doesn't get the minutes, he's the one I expect to be grumpy

If that scenario plays out combined with who the program is in on in ‘24 and ‘25, Gunn will have already been effectively recruited over. Actually, even if neither Witcher nor Reeves come he already has been because Newton’s just better. I’ll be pretty surprised if he’s not in the portal in April.

I was surprised he wasn’t in this year.  Competition will make them better, how much better is up to Gunn!  I for one don’t think CMW will add anyone else this year because he thinks he’s got a decent core with Galloway, Gunn and Newton.  I will be surprised if they do add someone, but I’ve been wrong before and could be again.  Also, there maybe a scenario where he may decide to play Cupps at the 2.

Are recruits just not buying what Cal is selling anymore?

UK hasn’t really been special on the court during the time they’ve been recruits. They probably remember the undefeated final four team, or some other good teams from almost a decade ago, but at this point I think Cal’s rep is as a guy who’s underachieved with high early expectations lately.

He’s never been much of a developer, and unless you’re a PG you end up in a narrowly prescribed role in his offense.

And then it’s all about momentum. Recruiting can be fickle.

Also think NIL $ have really leveled the playing field. UK can surely fund a high-caliber athletic department but the booster aid is probably not much better than e.g. at UT or Weat Virginia or Kansas State etc., if at all, now that all those places can legally compensate players.

I also think UK is heavily disorganized in terms of their NIL.  I think they lack the ability to tell recruits that player X made Y dollars because they have no idea.

Can you expand on this?  What the injury was, how it affected his ranking, etc?

Meniscus tear and he basically sat out his whole senior year.   Not playing all year dropped his ranking.   Before the injury he was rising each time they came out with the new ones.    Injury had to be worse then they let on to be out as long as he has been and he still is being brought back slowly by the staff

And in his latest video he still playing with a full leg brace. Now the good news is he was playing full court pickup ball which I’m assuming Indiana wouldn’t allow if he wasn’t on the mend. He was also jumping like a bad @$$.

But there’s clearly more than a meniscus tear as part of the situation.

I think in that last interview he said he was only about 85% now. I agree, must have been more serious.
