Game Thread: 11/28 vs. Maryland - Noon - ESPN2

We’ll need to play a complete game start to finish against Wiscy. We won’t be able to rely solely on our defense to keep us around until the offense gets going.

I want some revenge on Wiscy for those years their fifth string RB ran for 500 yards and 20 TDs on us!!

I know, why does Wisconsin have to kill us in football and always beat us in basketball. Really annoying.

I think IU’s defense will keep us in it, just like NW’s defense against them. However, they won’t be able to shut them down like they did Maryland today. If our O-Line can keep improving and creating holes, it makes our offense more dynamic and takes pressure off our QB.

Hope Penix comes back healthy with a chip on his shoulder, but I think Tuttle will be just fine as well.

Would love to see more runs to the outside and some quick bubble screens to get the Wiscy D-line running side to side and wear them down.  I don't think we do much running straight at them.

Agree and I know a lot of other Hoosier fans agree. We had a lot of success running outside today, and hope that continues.

I’m not a football guru, but feel our offense can get too predictable. Oh well, the problems of being 5-1 :) lol.

I hate to be the "I told you so" guy but Penix gets hurt way to easily.

That hit should not of hurt him at all, much less seriously. I am sitting with someone in my family who is a doctor and he said both that a hit like that should not cause any kind of injury much less a serious one but he is afraid based on the way he is walking that it is probably season ending. Taulia took a much harder hit in the knee on that last drive (should not of hurt him either, but certainly it had a better chance of hurting him then what happened to Penix).

Speaking of Taulia he is not a tenth of what his brother is and until that Hail Mary is really inaccurate in the pocket and is only good in quick throws and unless he improves is not headed for same stardom.

I actually feel OK assuming Tuttle has to replace Penix rest of year. We will see a drop off no doubt, but certainly have enough talent on D and at the skill positions if Tuttle can even be a game manager.

The reality is I am glad the Donoven McCulley is coming next year as we can't rely on Penix anymore and at very least need to have a good backup, but more likely a plan for future as Penix is made of glass. Marlin Mack on Colts is same and its why they drafted Taylor this year and think of him as a bonus since Mack also takes hits that really should not injure him.

Going forward we need to plan as if Penix is going to be injured and treat him as a bonus. I hate it but unfortunately guy has the tools but not the stamina for the next level.

Well if you didn’t want to be that guy, congrats. Because you didn’t tell anybody anything. And if your doc buddy was able to make a conclusive diagnosis based on tv replay...yeah I won’t finish that. Yeah he’s been injury prone. But what I saw was a full speed defender fall and clip penix in the heel while he was also at full speed, or close to it. Didn’t take any doctoring to know that could be bad. Achilles? Ankle tweak? Who knows. But your post is dripping with everything that can just simply kick rocks.

Just saw this posted. SS seems to be pretty plugged in IU Athletics. Wonder if it’s an ACL injury if this tweet is true.

Based off his track record, I’m expecting Penix to be good to go next Saturday now.

Tuttle looked pretty steady considering the circumstances he entered the game under. Let's give him a week with the first unit and see what he can do if Penix is unavailable. Changing the game plan a little going forward might work to our advantage. Now Wisconsin has to plan for something that they have very little film on. The season goes on regardless. I'm actually more concerned about the COVID issue than Penix. I thought I heard the announcers say we had 14 players out for today's game.
If it is Tuttle next game I would also like to see dexter Williams get some snaps. He is supposed to have a big arm with an ability to run

Totally agree with what you’re saying and understand the history of IU football and Wisky football and their games against one another....

But to play devils advocate I want to offer an opposing viewpoint not necessarily contradictory to your post but the narrative in general. This is an Indiana team that has steamrolled every opponent they’ve faced sans Ohio State (understandable, the only team to give them a run for their money in the last two years being Clemson) and Penn State (1st game of the season and actually dominated them the entire first half and choked the lead). The Hoosiers are 5-1 and have looked head and shoulders above every team. The Badgers are what, 2-1 with wins coming against Illinois and Michigan and a loss against Northwestern. NU got drubbed essentially by a Michigan State team that Indiana DEMOLISHED. Nothing this season has shown me that Indiana should be underdogs. This is a game I expect to win and think it says a lot about the disrespect the Hoosiers are getting. Replace the name “Indiana” with “Michigan” and the Wolverines are 7.5 point favorites against Wisconsin and a top 5 team in the country. I don’t know, maybe it’s just me being a little pissed off about the Penix injury and the national disrespect, but Indiana is a damn good football team that should beat Wisky next week and hopefully go 8-1 because the only team that has been capable of beating the Hoosiers has been Ohio State: a team that was up 16-0 in their last non-con game, the last non-con game any big ten team has played, against f****** Clemson.

What makes no sense is even if this injury is season ending (quite possible) why is he bringing his future after this year in question? Even worse case scenario if he tore his ACL again he should be ready by next season as most ACL's heal in 6 to 9 months now.

Why it brings his future at IU in question is beyond me? There is no injury outside a Torn Achilles (and I don't think it is that) that would anything beyond this season in any kind of jeopardy.

Unless Penix decides to just quit football altogether (and I would not blame him if he did given his injury issues) there is literally nothing that should keep him from being on field next season and certainly by 2022. He can't go to NFL now, so his only chance is to come back one more time next year and try to stay healthy which has been an issue.

To me there is no scenario that should call anything besides the rest of his 2020 season in question outside of quitting football which seems unlikely.

NU got drubbed by Michigan State?!  MSU kicked a FG to go up late and then recovered a fumble in the endzone to win by 9.  That is a drubbing?!  NU looked really bad yesterday but to call it a drubbing is inaccurate.  NU has a really good defense and an offense that can struggle.  Wiscy turned it over too much against NU and they were still in the game.  IU has handled Rutgers, Michigan, Michigan State, and Maryland.  Wiscy embarrassed Illinois and Michigan.

I don't think there is any arguing what IU did to MSU.  That wasn't ever close.

With empty stadiums, there's not a huge difference playing home and away but there is a difference.  IU playing at Wiscy with possibly a backup QB AND the history between the teams in the last few decades one can easily see why IU would be an underdog.  I want IU to win just as much as the next person and hope they spank the Badgers by 50.  However, this could be IU's biggest challenge of the season.  IU has hung with O$U several times over the past decade.  The same can't be said with the Badgers.

IU will have to stop the run and force the Badgers to throw it.  If IU stops the run we have a chance.

Apologies if I missed it in the various threads.  Has anyone heard anything on why Caleb Jones is still out, third week in a row I believe?  Also, any news on Sampson James and when he may return?

Caleb=COVID.

I assume Sampson too.

There has to be some news about Penix's injury out there. I can't believe it's been so hush, hush.

I can’t remember who put it out there, but someone on Twitter mentioned that CTA told them we would find out Monday. Will try to find it.

Fair point! Didn’t see much of the NU game beyond them going down 17-0 as I figured at that point the -7.5 spread was out the window. Merely wanted to offer a possible opposing viewpoint with this weekend’s big game approaching. Obviously tough to forget about the history of the Badgers making an embarrassment out of IU but I think this season’s different and have been tired of the national media having teams like UGA above IU when the Dawgs got smacked in their two losses.

Go Hoosiers! Can’t wait to see this secondary make Mertz look like the redshirt freshman he is :)

Indiana's Stevie Scott named Big Ten offensive player of the after a career-high three touchdowns for No. 12 IU in its 27-11 win over Maryland.  Third-straight week an IU player wins Big Ten offensive player of the week.
