It was about as effective than this one though?

Okay?  A good second half so what Ramsey had a good second half last year against Ball State didn’t mean crap at the end of the day when conference play started.

Penix threw it 40 times racking up the yards isn’t exactly unexpected   He completed 60 percent of his passes and had more picks than TDs.  So maybe he’s dynamic but big deal

Only one interception was Penx's fault. The other was on Fryfogle who slipped and threw off the route. I have no idea how you can possibly watch that play and say that INT was on Penix.

Did someone compare Peyton Manning’s colts offense to last years IU’s offense? [emoji52]

Also, you all realize this was Mikes first start? In his second drive he did something Ramsey has never done and physically cannot do. Throw the ball 45-50 yards in the air on a line.

This offense has a much much higher ceiling than any of the past 3-4 teams. Let’s give it a chance

We know what we're getting with Ramsey when he's coached by a horrible offensive coordinator. Would he be the same with the new one? Maybe, who knows. Our defense is bad, and our offense had one drive that lasted 4 minutes or more. That's a really bad combination. We need to be able to run the ball, and struggling to do that against ball state is not a good sign.

Well the new offensive coordinator doesn’t think Ramsey would be. Yes the o line needs to block better for the backs to run but that’s not on Penix or the offense. That’s just a combination of underperforming and inexperience.

One thing people aren’t talking about is that this Ball State team was better than last years. Last year they had several guys injured when they played IU. This year everyone was healthy. Their o line has some big experienced dudes that would play for IU right now. So that was one issue. The IU tackling was a major issue but that will be a focus moving forward. As for the offense until teams start respecting the passing game Scott will struggle because teams will pack it in on Scott which is what happened yesterday.

Penix is better for his system. Don’t know if system is better yet

My only point has been that this offense has far greater potential thanks to how dynamic Penix is and that we have a great group of RBs. I certainly am not sold we’re a bowl team, but it felt pretty certain we weren’t last year with Ramsey and DeBord.

I’m not sure why a few are already writing off the season after the first game. If you didn’t see the potential of this offense in the second half, I’m not sure what to tell you.

They scored 18 points in the second half. Is that really something to think is special.

And if it’s a style of offense that kills our defense is it really even worth it?

Penix made one bad mistake.  Other INT, a receiver tripped.  Another deep TD flat dropped, or 18 would have been 25.  As it stands, he accounted for 393 yards of offense against a team that obviously wanted to take away the run.  In his first game as a starter, and redshirt freshman coming off an injury?  I have no idea why people would be as negative as they have been.  Penix can do a whole lot more than Ramsey can.  Thus, the team can go a lot farther with him, as long as he matures and grows into the role.  One game (which could have been much better from a numbers standpoint) does not a season make.

How did the offense kill our defense?

Regarding the 18 points, we scored when we needed to score, executed a beautiful opening drive, didn’t waste opportunities, and pulled off some really interesting plays including a 2 point conversion.

You’re trying way too hard to hate on this and continue to simplify it down to the numbers. It makes me wonder if you actually saw the second half, because there was plenty to be excited about.

The team clearly has improvements to make, and the first half would have killed us against an OSU or UM. I also saw a young QB who didn’t let a couple early interceptions and drops by his WRs impact his confidence nor trust in his teammates.

If Westbrook makes that catch in the 3rd quarter, we score 25 in the second half.  50's enough anywhere.  Tennessee and Purdue would trade places with Indiana in a heartbeat.  This offense is very obviously more wide open than a year ago

Ok guys who cares who dropped the ball the point is the offense wasn’t that great if our WRs can’t catch a ball that’s a problem that’s not going away.

Offense had nothing to do with the defense. Defense wasn’t tackling from the start of the game.

Offense most assuredly is connected to defense. Or have people forgotten the Wilson days already. In the first half the D was on the field over 18 minutes because our offense was so Dynamic

Lol @ complaining about the way the offense looked week 1. .. it was sooo much better than we've seen.

We scored 34 and didnt play overly well. Eeesh.

It really wasn't. Not in yards, and not in points. Our receivers can't even catch the ball. And the quick pace is not sustainable with our bad defense. "Defensive guru" Tom Allen has managed to make the defense worse every year that he's been here. If Ball State can shred our defense, what are the real teams we play going to do?

People do this every single year. IU comes out and looks competent in the first few games, they think this is when we finally "break through", and then we don't.

Please tell us how an offense that had 59 more yards and 8 more points against Ball State than we averaged last year throughout the entire season was "soooo much better than what we've seen". The offense put up 554 yards against Penn State and 487 against Purdue last year. We're supposed to be impressed that we put up some points against a below average MAC team?
